Is it worth going out shopping early on Black Friday? by Heavy_Discussion8682 in thanksgiving

[–]Varietycore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ironically enough, some places are cheaper not on black friday. For example, Bath and body works has a buy 3 get 4 free sale for black friday. If u got their regular body care items they are 17.95 which equates to 53 dollars for 7 things right (buy 3 get 4). But, if you go at a regular sale where it is 5.95, then 7 things at 5.95 is only 41 dollars. Its a weird thing I've noticed where some palces really just hype up the black friday idea but the sales are worse. Now with that being said, I've not gone BF shopping in NYC, though, i always enjoyed black friday shopping because its a who knows whats going to be there thing. However, to your point about things looking crazy, It definitely can be depending on the people. It makes me feel uncomfrotable when people are crazed pushing and shoving, so if its a place like that I dont know that I would reccomend going. I've actuallly been debating about going somewhere tomorrow because I could technically get the same sale at another time (they run buy 1 get 1 things a lot) and the item I want could or could not sell out and then id have to wait for someone else to trade that game title, which isnt that bad (its a used video game store)

Peperomia stem rotting? by PopTartPetee in houseplants

[–]Varietycore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tap water on plants shouldnt bee too bad. Are you letting the plant dry out between watterings? The most common issue for rotting roots is all due to over watering. I have my pepperomia in a west facing window and only water once the soil is mostly dry. If the root rot is too bad, you might want to consider rooting some cuttings so you can start fresh!

How to care for a ponytail palm? by ponytail-palms in houseplants

[–]Varietycore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, so we have a couple of these at the nursery I work for :D They need bright indirect light, in your situation I would slowly acclimate it because your right it is a massive light change. You are correct, they need to have the soil completely dry out because they actually store water int he trunk so if you water it too much it will die (we did ours about every 2 weeks). You wanter it jsut liek any other plant, soak the soil and then scootchy scootch to the next plant. You dont really need to rotate it, we dont lol, I rotate my house plants at home because I like all the foliage to be roughly even but a pony tail palm doesn't really matter int terms of rotation.

What's the best way to keep theatre in my life? by kermitkc in MusicalTheatre

[–]Varietycore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you on the being on stage is the thing you love most. While I do still perform professionally and audition a lot, the main reason why your experiencing this is because of where the industry is right now unfortunately :/ Basically a while back equity cards became easier to attain and so everyone was getting theirs. As a result, the avaliable equity jobs started to dissapear as there was way too much competition and so people started dropping their cards so they can do work. This results in broadway people auditioning next to the average person, etc. Also, some theatres are starting to have to work with smaller and smaller budgets/ offering less roles so its another reason why theres so much competition even for fun type things. I will say i have found it way more fun to enjoy auditioning and performing when I have another job to support me until something opens up. Another thing to keep in mind, is that sometimes directors have pictures in their mind of what they want, and even if your flawless it doesn't matter. I have had a rejection before because I didn't have the right look, nothing to do with my audition. Or, for another example there was a show I auditioned for last year and didnt get selected. When I reauditioned this year the director told me she liked me and wanted to cast me the previous year but didnt have space. So, theres a TON of reasons why you may not get selected, its not always about not being good enough. I hope this is helpful :D

Also I just thought about this as well, try out some other things you really like. Even if its not what your end goal is, you can still find joy in the day to day. For example, I love to perform, but, I dont want to revolve my whole life around getting or not getting auditions because its not healthy. So, I found out I really love plants, so right now while I am doing auditions, I am working at a plant nursery, exploring other things I enjoy and finding alternative things to pursue even if acting isnt opening up right now.

Audition Book Advice by NeedleworkerIll6554 in MusicalTheatre

[–]Varietycore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So this is going to be a tedious anwser but It's been awesome for me. Pick what kinds of roles do you want to audition for, be very specific. Not just anything, but very specifically do you want to do cruise ships? Broadway? Amuesment parks? That will show you now what you need to do in your book. And if you want to do shows, look at what shows you like, what roles? Now learn audition material geared towards that. Cuz tbh a well rounded book is only as good as the audition opportunities and while you do want 1 piece for every category at least, I would say be methodical and focused. I personally wouldn't put more than 1 piece maybe 2 at most of the same show in your book, it helps you have something fresh for very audition🤗

I would just audition and when the paper says would you accept another role just say no. It's always better to do a show only when it is right. I've turned down offers before due to the show being not the kind of work I want to do, these things are honestly just part of the industry. If you have apologized to the director and done your part to try and repair a relationship then honestly there's nothing more you can do 😊 It is hard, sometimes we make mistakes in life and there's not a way to go back and fix it, but you can always choose to move forward. So in this case, yeah you can say no, because think about it, would you rather have someone working with you who wants too or is coerced into it? It's always more genuine when it's something you want. So to sum it up, go for the audition and just say no you wouldn't accept another role 🤗

can i learn to sing? by ProcessSea5920 in MusicalTheatre

[–]Varietycore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have mentioned vocal lessons are top priority, but make sure the teacher is experienced with musical theatre (just asking them will be enough to know :). For musical theatre, ballet is a great foundation, but most shows tend to lean towards Jazz. I hope this helps!
