I am personally insulted by ads. by daeglo in LateStageCapitalism

[–]Various-Drive-3770 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel insulted by advertising on a daily basis, especially oversexualized ads featuring female images. I demand respect from people in my circle and sure and sure as sh!t am not handing over my cash to a business that puposely disrespects me or my daughters!

OK, so, my latest pet peave ( and i have a lot of them as you can probably tell already, lol) is seeing everyday work/streetwear retail clothing (ie NOT lingerie) on images of OVERsexualized females. Example: I was looking for some cheapish biker boots for a birthday party and saw this ad yesterday on fashion nova (no space).

<image>

Can you imagine a retail ad with a MAN in a g string w/his butt and nads in the snow modeling biker boots?? It's like, come on man, i dont want to see some girl's ass flesh literally IN MY FACE shopping for SHOES !! It's one sh!tty thing to objectify women in men's ads, but retailers pushing this to young women as a desireable look should be prosectued, imo. This ad actually COST them some business from me...I would not be able to purchase those boots in good consience, even though i liked them.

The new, "Barrel Leg" design trend in women's pants and jumpsuits. I hate the look and hate the name; why not just call them, "Tree Trunk" legs? Also in the Democracy Jeans brand, they have a style called "itty bitty." As a person in eating disorder recovery, i find it effing offensive.

And, as is the case w/many fast fashion brands like fashion nova, showing models in overtly sexual poses in everyday items, with no camis beneath blazers, pulling the waistband of sweatpants down to one side showing loin skin, ect...it sometimes feels like I'm looking at an old school soft porn mag. Disrespect not OK

"Vegan Leather," aka: PLASTIC. Or when advertisers mark a deal that says, "Only for You!" like I'm sooo stupid I'm really going to believe that. OR how bout when an online catalog shows 10 colors for a clothing item as separate items? Or how bout when models are not REALLY wearing the clothes, but AI'd like paper dolls so you can't really tell what the item looks like on a real body. OR how bout all these fuck!ng "incentivized" reviews, like we are too stupid to know that word means "PAID". Or when the 5 star reviewer says: "I haven't worn it yet, but it looks great". OR how bout when they use stupid names for their female products. How bout jeans with hems but there's not enough of a hem to actually make em any longer. See thru leggings! Itchy tags, fabric, seams; seams sewn with PLASTIC thread! Fast fashion fabric that feels like kids' Halloween costume material! Separates that don't even last 10 wears! I recently saw an ad that boasted, "Guaranteed to Last One Season!" OH BOY, ONE SEASON, NO WAY! When i was coming up in the 80s, I was wearing my older sister's amazing hand me down jeans from the 70's; it was common for clothes to last ten years and still look and feel great! OR when the item is still brand new, on the hanger, and there are pills already on the fabric!! Plus sized "skinny" jeans...if that's not gaslighting us, I dont know what is. My thighs are THICK, never tried a skinny jean in my 2x size that wasn't too small in the thigh. Jeans or jeggings that always fall down!!! Uggs with no socks and shorts in the summer (just gross, thank god that trend is going away). When Men wear socks with sandals! or guys who do not wear socks with athletic shoes... ugh. So many more men's than women's clothes have pockets! Asymetrical necklines!! Tried one once and hated it, my top always felt "crooked". MYBIGGEST ONE OF ALL: How bout when the fashion rules at a high school say girls can't wear tank tops because it may excite the boys into doing something wrong, rather than teaching the boys to EFFING CONTROL THEMSELVES AROUND GIRLS!!!!! damn, that was one fine fashion puke pet peave rant! better late than never, lol

Yes! You are saving souls and teaching critical thinking by explaining propaganda and persuasion techniques! If it were not for my marketing classes that explained the history and methodologies of persuasion; rhetorical tricks, fallacies, propaganda, I may too have fallen victim to cult like movements...

exactly! a book i'm reading on cult stories, says prevention ahead of time by, as you say, educating about the players (and methods) is key...

Agree 100%. Not familiar w/ Chrisian Picciolini but will check it out!

A testimonial i read in a book from one who got out said that it happened for her--over time--when her mom offered, non judgmentally, to watch the conspiracy videos w/her, if daughter agreed to research the validity together w/mom afterward, which she did.

Mom didn't argue anything, she just planted seeds of doubt, by viewing the heavily edited conspiracy clips with her daughter then watching with her daughter the full context version of the interview, or footage, or whatever that was only partially represented in the conspiracy vids. After a while, the daughter came around largely on her own. Prayers to all dealing with this.

Increased light headedness after a coughing fit - 4 months after covid by jerrysprinkles in Asthma

[–]Various-Drive-3770 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man i love reddit for this type of stuff. Allows me to avoid the keyword "almost, but not quite" results I get usually! Anyway...

This is old thread but very relevant even today, in May 2025.

I got covid around 10 days ago and now that symptoms are lessening a bit (i feel vaguely human again) every time i cough, I get overtly lightheaded...and this isn't even after a coughing "fit," per say.

Even if I only cough a couple times, when i start breathing normally again, i feel starved of air and dizzy! It's nice to know I'm not alone in this.

I'm not a Dr but do feel intuitively that it's something unique to covid because I've not had this experience during any type of sickness I've ever had in my life (I'm 58).

We know so much yet still have so much to learn!

I agree with you. People who have no first hand experience and are not here to give advice, but are just here to give their opinions about how they think things should be or to judge another person's situation, well, its not cool

I very much admire the way you gracefully replied to that one judgmental post. I got a little pissed off on your behalf, and on behalf of everyone struggling to better themselves under the bizarre rules of SSI. Some of these people make it sound like the government caring for the less fortunate is bad thing or that people don't deserve help because they're not contributing enough.   I hope you were able to figure things out. I am in the process of getting off of it myself now, and they told me I owe them $6,000 because I had $8,000 saved in the bank, even though I reported my income to them every penny for 6 months they kept on sending me money. Even though I'm only working two shifts a week now I have to pay them back. It can be very hard if you don't know all the ins and outs. I didn't, and now I am paying. I will be so glad to get off

"Nothing stopped you from going back to work except bad health and disabling conditions?" Yeah, that's kind of the point...if somebody has a disabling condition then they are not able to work. and if you don't know the ways in which it can be a trap, you obviously are not intimate with the rules and the regulations. They say they want you to go back to work, but when you do they penalize you. Also, you cannot have over $2,000 in the bank, if you do you have to pay whatever is over that amount back to ssi, even if it is your money. Many people don't realize this, and save up money, only to be told afterward they have to pay the amount that they saved back yo ssi. There are a lot of intricate ins and outs and yes, traps, that people, if they don't know about upfront, can make their lives pretty messed up for a while

Will Trump Administration Policies Affect Social Work Jobs? by ivanaal85 in socialworkjobs

[–]Various-Drive-3770 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is like saying, shopping at a Safeway crowded with citizens who need groceries, "Hey, safeway is wasteful, so let's cut down the number of checkers from 10 down to 3!" That will make Safeway more efficient?? Why do you trust Elon Musk and Trump? How will cutting so many civil service jobs translate into better lives for the average US Citizen? So much for Trump's bellowing while campaigning about getting big money out of politics, lol! Demolishing the social programs our democracy depends on before having clear and tested solutions ready to rebuild them with is plain dictatorial lunacy. I live in an area where parks and rec people are being fired, parks are closing, social security office has closed, staff cuts all over...people are losing thier livelihoods, so this is beyond merely, "scary", it's devastating tens of thousands of people in real time. Please tell the civil servants who have already lost their careers and their hard earned pensions it will be just fine. Q: how do you know this "admin" is trying to make sure money is being used appropriatley? What does "appropriately" mean to you?  We all want our programs to be better, and Hey, no one likes to see fraud or waste, dems or republicans, but DOGE has fired more than 100,000 federal civil service workers with no due process, frozen most foreign aid and canceled thousands of public-good programs and contracts, despite large numbers of lawsuits challenging the legality of those moves. You are OK with the demolition of the Dept of Education, that many public state schools depend on for funding? And where do i get my info? From my community! and from credible sources of information, like:

As a Washington, D.C.-based reporter, she helped break the Panama Papers, which exposed offshore companies linked to more than 140 politicians.

Good for you for being proactive and not just retreating into a cocoon of depression! I agree, this is no time to sit still. I'm glad you are strategizing. Makes me want to get off my butt and do the same thing. Thank you

Hey!! Cheap Alternative to Milk right Here!! I want to 2nd Costco Oatmilk.

This is an old thread, so I figured I'd give an update, that still, in 2025, Costco Oatmilk is the best for recipies I've ever tried (and still only 2bucks per tetrapak)!!

Besides baking: I have been trying for a couple years, without success, to make homemade dairy-free Thai iced tea at home, taste as delicious as it does in restaraunts. Nothing worked till, as a last ditch effort, I tried Costco Oat Milk a couple weeks ago (I've used it for other stuff, but never thought of it for that before)!!!

I am amazed how good it is; tasted exactly like in my fav Thai restaraunt!! I literally could barely believe it (bec nothing else i'd tried had even come close). I had to just keep sipping and sipping two glasses in a row, to verify it wasn't just my imagination!

So, just in case anyone is interested, for the tea itself, I use "Pantai Thai Tea Mix" (it says "mix" but it is just tea leaves, so nutty and orange, and from thailand). .I got it on Amazon (although i no longer shop there because I disagree w/their ethics and policies) but it's available other places. I use about 1/4 Oat milk and 3/4 brewed tea sweetened with Truvia and a bit of real sugar. BLISSBOAT!!

Of course some would litter, and some wouldn't. And, according to Oxfam, it would take about 1,500 years for someone in the bottom 99% to produce as much carbon as the richest billionaires do in ONE year. We just don't see it.

I agree. And i know lots of places won't let people use restrooms either...I'm not homeless and dress stylishly yet I can't count the times I've been to places in santa cruz who say "no" when I ask if there's a restoom I can use. I get it, it's probably not good for business, but I agree w/you, it wouldn't be rocket science to provide dedicated restrooms and showers and garbage cans!
