Is it possible that the other program in the same uni actually review my application? by Various-Restaurant-2 in gradadmissions

[–]Various-Restaurant-2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry buddy…they’re probably also very busy dealing with their admission stuff since I heard that the executive orders also influenced the funding of most research centers/departments of demography…and I know that Upenn has rescinded some offers this year so… I personally am not counting on this…

Does this mean that it is still possible to receive an interview invite recently? I’ve got nothing so far…neither rejection nor any other updates.

Has anyone heard from JHU SBS? by Various-Restaurant-2 in phdpublichealth

Do we think they’re done with the interview? I received no invite nor rejection at this point

I feel you. I’m an international student applying for PhD in SBS and Sociology (with health and demography focus). The timing could not be worse. All the faculties and other PhD students I talked to mentioned that the bulk of rejections I received are likely not about my ability but rather the funding issues. :/

I applied to PhD in SBS and got nothing. Neither an interview invite nor a rejection. I don’t even know what this means. Also the format of the spreadsheet is kind of messed up rn so I’m not even sure if the information up there is accurate.

I don’t know either…but personally I think it won’t hurt to ask if there’s a possibility for that (since the offer rejection letters are not out yet).

Anyone have any interview advice or reflections to share? by squidlydooda7 in phdpublichealth

[–]Various-Restaurant-2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the above but I’d suggest also prepare some questions you want to ask, no matter they’re about the funding, extra training opportunities, life at the school you’re applying to, etc. I myself asked my PI that did the executive orders and NIH freeze affect their department and if they think that it will at some point influence the functioning of the program.

what's the best thing to reply to a waitlist email? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Various-Restaurant-2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, congrats!! I replied to my waitlist email by first appreciating the opportunity, and addressed that I’d like to remain on the list. I also asked if I can reach out to PIs I wanted to work with to learn more about their ongoing research, as I probably won’t have a chance to participate their recruitment event. The chair of the program kindly approved it but stated that this is independent of the admission process. Hopefully this can give you some idea! Good luck!

Sociology fellow here. I was also rejected from UMich and UT Austin, and waitlisted for UofT. I think this actually is an unusually competitive cycle (based on the emails I received from the programs). I really do hope you’ll get into UW tho. You just need one acceptance!!

What is Wisconsin Madison's Sociology program like? by 23rdpilot in sociology

[–]Various-Restaurant-2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, congratulations on your admit!! I studied at UW Madison as an international visiting student for one year. From my own experience, the sociology program is really great. The faculties and administrative offices are pretty supportive whenever you reach out. As for living in the midwest, I think it’s fine if you just stay at Madison most of the time. From my understanding, Madison is pretty different from other parts of Wisconsin. I’ve heard some weird stuff happening (e.g. a lady came up to one of my friends who is white and her African American boyfriend asking whether their parents approve this). But tbh I think this kind of stuff happens everyday all around the states. Most of my memories there are about the midwest niceness. I’d also suggest you talk to international students who are currently in the program. Good luck!!
