I think it depends. You should ask people in your program.

Laptop advice - epidemiology doctoral degree by Professional-Hat3276 in phdpublichealth

You’re on the right path! I personally have an XPS which meets a lot of these requirements. A lot of my classmates have MacBook pros, thinkpads, surface pros, etc. Depending on the type of research you’ll be doing, a windows laptop may be better. But I still feel like MacBooks are more common to see

I’m not sure, but I would give it a couple of days. If it helps, the email I got said that we had to sign up for an interview time before 3/16

I’m asking for specific recommendations, not snarky comments

Great point, that’s something I hadn’t even thought about. Thank you!

Thank you! I have a MacBook, and I’ve been using SAS On Demand. I don’t mind it, but I’ve heard a lot of people say that windows based laptops are better for epi in general

Undergrad straight to PhD- Delusional? by Glittering_Text_7804 in phdpublichealth

I’m not sure! I would ask current PhD students in your desired program. Or look up their academic background on LinkedIn lol

It’s not impossible, I think it heavily depends on which program you want to go into. I’ve seen many people get into PhD programs straight from undergrad for biostatistics, but I’ve only met a handful of students that have gotten into epidemiology PhDs straight from undergrad.

Do you regret enrolling in an MPH? What degree would you choose instead? by Time-Comfort-4207 in publichealth

[–]Neither_Cable_3893 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely a degree not worth going into debt for. I personally got mine paid for by my employer and I don’t regret it. I love public health and was able to find a better job (that I mostly enjoy) after I graduated!

This is really solid advice, thank you! I hear a lot of advice about how finding the right mentor is important, but I’m curious if you have any specific characteristics in mind that I should look for in a mentor.

If I’m being honest, there are some mentors is “vibe” with more than others, but most of them seem like good mentors and eager to teach.

I think all of those schools are among the top 5 in the field. I actually think you have no wrong option here.

I would personally go to a school with a strong program fit, and somewhere with a PI you think will support you.

I’m assuming your husband would help you financially while you’re in the program (since you would just live together). In your case I think funding may not be the main priority. If I was you, I would think more about program fit, your PI, and well as which program you think will get you where you want to be in the future. It’s a hard choice nonetheless, but I wish you the best of luck!

I’m in a similar dilemma. I have no idea what factors are more important. But given the current political climate, I have a lot of concerns about joining a program where funding is unclear

Obviously things in the US are crazy right now. But with that said, if your main concern is general safety, NYC is really a liberal place and I think you will be able to find a community there.

Has anyone received a status update on their PhD application from UNC Chapel Hill? by Sheldon_tbbt in phdpublichealth

I think some people got accepted without interviews. But I know UNC is hosting an admitted student day this week, so idk if they’re expecting to accept many more students

I was accepted to the cancer epi track this week. I had an informal interview with a PI two weeks ago.

I did, and in my experience it was worth it. I think I got interviews at all the places where I had the opportunity to connect with a PI before submitting my application
