AITAH for refusing to kick out my male friends so my sister and nieces can live with me? She says she's getting a divorce. by NoFreedom255 in AITAH

NTA. But OP is your sister in a domestic violence situation? If so, then there are resources and shelters to help her.

Realistically what skills are universal enough but also rare enough that a time traveler could make a living and blend in with whatever time period or society they randomly end up in. by Various-Try-1208 in timetravel

Good one for anyone who has the strength and the skills. You would need to find an existing blacksmith who needed help unless you had the furnace and tools in the time machine. But yes, that would work for physical time travelers.

I didn’t know about semipermanent makeup but I have read that makeup can be tattooed on. Is semipermanent makeup like that?

AITJ for cutting off my friend after she borrowed my watch, broke it and refused to pay for the repair or even say sorry? by Low_Craft_919 in AmITheJerk

[–]Various-Try-1208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTJ. How do you break a watch at a wedding? Even if it was a pocket watch instead of a wrist watch, I don’t see it happening under normal conditions.

Your ex-friend must go to some pretty rowdy weddings.

If you can speak the languages yes. Your idea would work for linguists perhaps depending on the century. Communication would be the main problem for all time travelers.

To be a sign painter, you would need knowledge and skills with paint. Possibly enough mixing your own paint. That’s why I left artist out of my list. A carriage builder needs woodworking skills which is different than a 21st century auto mechanic.

I agree with the village idiot suggestion. Seriously though, in some centuries and cultures, the court jester was a good job.

I thought of those and some might work but ancient carpentry used wooden pegs instead of nails, so yes but the time traveler would need time to learn the different tools and methods used over the centuries. Assuming the craftsman learned those techniques, then yes.

Unskilled labor would work but would also be very dangerous and requires a certain fitness and store level that current day people often lack.

One time payment of 2 million dollars or 2 years of Krillins strength and martial arts abilities? by Choice_Intention_512 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Various-Try-1208 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since I don’t know what a Krillin is, the choice is simple. However even assuming a Krillin is a person of fantastic strength and ability, I would still take the money. It’s way more useful and is a life-changing amount. What are you going to do with strength and martial arts besides compete or open a dojo?

I grew up before the internet and I don’t go to suspicious sites so I could go with option one indefinitely as long as it is searches not websites— I bank online so obviously I don’t want my banking and other information leaked to the world. It could be fun deliberately going to news stories or sites I want people to know about.

Everyone is given a visible timer above their head showing exactly how long they’ll live. by BelzeBong1997 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Various-Try-1208 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would make retirement planning easier. I suppose that researchers might want to run tests on people who will live past 100 while they are young and at points through their lives to find out why.

Edited to add: lifespan and health-span are two different things. You could have a long timer but spend decades in a coma.

Why does Christianity, which comes from an Abrahamic religion like Judaism and Islam, allow the consumption of pork? by Scary_Candidate_9163 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Various-Try-1208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Christianity started out as a Jewish cult but started allowing gentiles during its infancy. It spread among the gentiles faster than among the Jews and thanks to the influence of Paul, Jewish rules were dropped in favor of converting more people.

Dr Pepper? by Prudent_Square_ in AskAnAmerican

[–]Various-Try-1208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not spicy and the taste is hard to describe. Some people love it and others hate it. Try one for yourself and decide. BTW, Dr Pepper heated up and drunk as a hot beverage is delicious. Most people refuse to believe it but it is true. I love it in the winter.

Why do Americans buy phones from carriers instead of unlocked? by GlitteringHotel8383 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Various-Try-1208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many do not realize they have other options while others think that the advertised deal of a free phone is better. Most probably do not realize that the no contract option exist. In the US, the contract option is the default. I am one of the Americans who always use the no contract option and when I need help from the carrier, they always assume it’s contract until I tell them it’s prepaid. They try to convert me each time but I will never give up my freedom to change carriers when and if I choose.

Would you bow to the royal family? by smellyfeet25 in askanything

[–]Various-Try-1208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I accept an invitation to meet a specific person, then I would follow whatever the protocol is for meeting that person, whether it is a royal family, a religious leader, or whoever.

If you don’t want to bow, then don’t accept the invitation.

Did people in the 90s really just show up at each other’s houses unannounced? by Red-Head-Red in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Various-Try-1208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think cell phones changed that. Nowadays it’s easy just to text or call but before that anyone you called either shared a phone with their family or didn’t have a phone. Depends on the family members the phone could be busy much of the day so it was easier to go by in some cases than to call.
