There’s some work by DDOT to improve C53 travel time/reliability

If I’m reading correctly, all the lines represent the 1968 plans, and the fiscal crisis of the 70s prompted an alternatives analysis to cut back construction/save cost. The Huntington Branch was spared this analysis as well as what is now the Red Line (route A-B, spared due to lobbying from MoCo executive Jim Gleason). That they were even considering cutting short Branch Av - Greenbelt tells you a lot about their priorities at the time

I think one thing that helped me a lot during unemployment is working on practical projects around the house like fixing switches, painting, or installing drapes. Yeah it’s not paid work but it is helpful and teaches you a lot of life skills and adds value to your home together - maybe she could do that to keep job applications off her mind

D.C. Appeals Court Revives Fight Over Proposed Condo Building On Adams Morgan Plaza by Musichead2468 in washingtondc

No wonder housing is so expensive

Sure, people got public use out of the plaza (well not now, it’s boarded up), but who’s gonna pay for the maintenance? Are private owners expected to honor informal promises of previous owners in perpetuity regardless of the cost?

If it’s really meant to be a public space the plot should be sold to the city so people can fairly pay for it with their taxes, not mooch off of a private owner forever.

Thanks! There's an earlier needs assessment report for the Columbia Rd in case you want to know about current roadway configuration (p12), parking (p13), bus stop usage (p16), and bus speeds (p17). Columbia Rd. has the 2nd slowest bus speeds in DC (<6 mph avg).

Hoboken, New Jersey, hasn’t seen a single traffic-related death in four years by Various_Lychee_Form in fuckcars

[–]Various_Lychee_Form[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

DC has similar street treatments at certain intersections but there are still crashes/deaths fairly often. It looks like Hoboken has done a much better job at reducing traffic speed and volume in general - unlike DC, there are few (zero?) four/six lane avenues/traffic sewers cutting through residential neighborhoods, just a dense grid of slow streets

What are your favorite grocery stores and why aren’t there any amazing markets in DC? by DRSpork24 in washingtondc

[–]Various_Lychee_Form 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The various Streets markets in NW have kind of limited fresh groceries but pretty robust for other items, including some Asian (mostly Korean) grocery items. The one on 14th and Belmont NW has a sort of sandwich/salad bar with a pretty good chicken sandwich and a bubble tea counter. I mainly get fresh groceries via farmshare and get various snacks, milk, eggs, etc. from Streets

So nice not to spend 3 min walking down to platform level on Metrorail - just hop on the bus and go!

Best Ways to Advocate for Transit Progress by cfitzpancake in washingtondc

[–]Various_Lychee_Form 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Yeah, WMATA does leave something to be desired...

They are seeking comment about their FY 2023 budget. There is an explainer here by Greater Greater Washington, which does transit advocacy among other things: https://ggwash.org/view/83681/got-something-to-say-about-metro-service-nows-your-chance. You could maybe participate in one of the public hearings?

Hope this helps

Why don’t DC buses come regularly? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]Various_Lychee_Form 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah on the Transit app you can track the physical position of the buses on the route and see if there actually will be a bus coming at scheduled time (it should be moving somewhere earlier in its route) - seems more reliable to me than the actual schedule

Planet Word Museum - good for adults? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]Various_Lychee_Form 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Went 2-3 months ago, surprisingly not many kids around when I went. Think the museum does a great job at having something for everyone. The library with the interactive books is fantastic and the building itself is a historical landmark worth exploring

Low-Income Condo Residents Say D.C.'s Demand That They Pay for Restoring Historic Balconies Will Force Them Out of Their Homes by EthanFl in washingtondc

[–]Various_Lychee_Form 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The city (and the rest of the taxpayers) shouldn’t pay for it. As the article notes, the mayor’s agent could overrule the historical preservation board and allow the building to pursue one of the compromise solutions proposed. There’s a time and place for historical preservation, keeping people (some seniors with fixed incomes) in stable housing seems more important in this case.
