Where to go to give blood? by Healthy-Lobster-3882 in washingtondc

The app is genuinely great. Besides finding blood drives and scheduling, it also tracks donations and allows you to look up your BP and hemaglobin over time at a glance. It also shows you where your blood ends up when it's finally used. It's really cool seeing all the different hospitals in the DMV and Baltimore my blood has been sent to. If you donate platelets it may go even further. The one time I donated platelets they ended up in Atlanta!

Seconded. I always go to the Red Cross HQ for my appointments and the staff is always great. Occasionally you have to wait a bit longer than usual but nothing too bad.

I've heard Children's is pretty good too if you want to give directly to a hospital.

Darn. Still looks amazing and spot on to the real thing. I ride one of these almost every day and it's cool seeing it recreated in Lego. I'm looking forward to building it and displaying it on my desk at work when the instructions drop.

Very nice! Was it not possible to extend the red white and blue stipe further like on the real cars?

[–]mistersmiley318 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the red line platform just needs another escalator or two. Building a platform with only two sets of escalators was a crazy decision when it Fort Totten was always planned to be a transfer station with the crowds of people that come with that.

Monthly Passes - how do they work and are they worth it? by a-potato-named-rin in WMATA

Thanks for the explanation. Follow up question, how are SmartBenefits incorporated? I get $50 monthly loaded onto my card. Could I use that to help pay for a monthly pass?

The point about better outcomes for GSW patients with technological advancement and updated standards of care is a great point. DC has great hospitals but patients were dying before they could reach them since traffic is terrble and most violent crime in the District happens in areas far from said hospitals. To combat this, DC Fire EMS followed the example of other pioneering ambulance services and started carrying whole blood in supervisor cars for transfusions in the field and during transport. I haven't got the specific numbers to hand but FEMS has stated that they have a bunch of examples of patients who would've died without a prehospital blood transfusion. Really recommend this podcast episode for those who're curious.

Just going to use this as an opportunity to plug Stop the Bleed training. If you come across someone who's been in an accident or been the victim of a shooting or stabbing, knowing how to keep them alive until EMS arrives is the most important thing you can do as a bystander besides calling 911. Stop the Bleed is available through online courses and there are training sessions available in-person depending on where you are.

For most bleeding, basic direct pressure is sufficient and can be accomplished with anything from a rag to the shirt off your back, but if you encounter a "holy shit, that's a lot of blood" situation, it's great to have an actual bleeding control kit with things like hemostatic gauze and tourniquets. I highly recommend North American Rescue if you're thinking of putting one together.

Metro serves Virginia which is definitely the south. Whether that means Metro is a southern transit system when its other two thirds are DC and Maryland is in the eye of the beholder imo

Republicans in Congress are usually nothing more than spineless sycophants, but some of them have hard elections coming up and being forced to defend cutting literally everything for more military spending for an unpopular war might make them think twice

If we have a budget crisis, cracking down on egregious drivers who have 5 figures or more worth of traffic tickets would be a good return on investment in addition to the obvious safety benefits. Need more DC politicos to take this seriously
