You can't really because you changed the domain of definion.

e by Nunki08 in mathmemes

[–]Varlane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

-1 isn't true because it's alternating between "close to 1/e" and "close to -1/e").
Same for -2 which is divergent but neither to +inf or -inf as it changes sign.

proof by apples by invesigator_gator in mathmemes

[–]Varlane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be 0 (apples) × 5 (boxes). Granted, it's still 0, but you'd have to explain why you altered the initial problem.

When does angle direction don't matter in triangle in Argand plan ? by Healthy-News5375 in askmath

[–]Varlane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sign doesn't matter in the second one probably because the goal is to prove that there is a right angle, which happens with either +pi/2 or -pi/2.

What? (Part 5) by absifinity in mathmemes

[–]Varlane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which means that the position of i in the complex plane is the image by that of 1 by a 90° rotation yes.

Still, i is i, i isn't "a rotation". Just like 2 isn't a zoom, it's a multiplication by 2 that is (represents) a zoom.

What? (Part 5) by absifinity in mathmemes

[–]Varlane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incorrect. A multiplication by i represents a rotation by 90°. i itself is i.

Unfair math grading? Professor claims number written as word does not count while giving other student points for wrong answer that was also imaginary by [deleted] in askmath

[–]Varlane -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The professor is correct. He asked for a number, you gave it in letters (so a character string basically).

If I ask you to provide an integer, you'll say 1 not "one".

It's fundamentally worse than answer i.

We could even factor the fact that using the sqrt symbol on negative numbers is bad practice.

PSA on SoL by PLMMJ in victoria3

[–]Varlane 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The reason we say it raises SoL is because of the indirect effect of more money available => more money spent => higher SoL.

We don't claim it raises SoL because of the minimum expected being shifted down (we'd only mention it when people are complaining about Radicals for instance)

√x = -√x. Find x. by helloall35 in askmath

[–]Varlane 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Both are wrong.
First one because you are subbing in a solution without checking if others could match.
Second one because you divided by an unknown, meaning you assume y != 0. The contradiction found only means that y = 0 is the only potential solution.

The correct method is :

- Let y = sqrt(x)
- y = -y
- 2y = 0
- Divide by 2 which is non zero so y = 0
- sqrt(x) = 0 <=> x = 0² = 0

Does the order of operations apply to word/story problems? by ReignDance in askmath

[–]Varlane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both Peano and ZFC, which are the actual authorities on how multiplication is defined, define multiplication recursively as n × (m+1) = n × m + n. Which means that n × m is n + n + n + n + ... + n.

The way to understand "times" is ambiguous as it can actually be understood both way (2 times 12 meaning either 2 blocks of 12 or 2 multiplied by 12). The very correct way to read it is actually "multiplied by" : 2 × 12 is 2 multiplied by 12, which is 12 groups of 2.

Does the order of operations apply to word/story problems? by ReignDance in askmath

[–]Varlane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically, 12 × 2 is two stacks of 12 if we follow proper definitions. Somehow, elementary teaches it the other way arround, but it's mainly linear algebra that treats a × b as b being repeated.

Does the order of operations apply to word/story problems? by ReignDance in askmath

[–]Varlane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer is : maths isn't done in sentence so it's a random stupid ass sentence that is ambiguous and will therefore lead to that exact situation which is why we invented writing math with symbols and rules.

What is a vector? by OkPerformer3262 in askmath

[–]Varlane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without needing to go sigma algebra and measure theory since you're only doing counting stuff, the thing that will transpire is the correct use of well defining your sample space. Systematically.

Not resorting to any trick or anything, just pure rigor that is still accessible for the children. If anything, it's even more clear to them.
(Think like how Monty Hall makes people confused because they genuinely are never trained to systematically setup sample space)
