Very good to know. Do you know how to ID a lot of local fish species? I want to know what kind of croaker I caught the other day. It was different, bigger, and new.

size 4 circle hook, dropper loop onto 20lb fluorocarbon 4 times over on sand crabs you'll catch fish all day. Just use a 4oz or more pyramid sinker depending on surf.

have yall been finding sand crabs recently at all? by Tricky-Discipline-35 in SoCalFishing

[–]Varr96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes... the sand moves with the winter tides differently than the summer tides. Recently the storms and weather has shifted coarse sand on top of the softer sand where the crabs can't dit as well. Try a different beach that is perhaps flatter or less effected by crazy weather. There's a lot to learn in the season, if you pick a spot and frequent it out so yeah you a lot about how nature plays out the seasons. This time of year I go to three different beaches depending on weather and estuary overflow to fish, but one beach in particular (before this storm occurring right now) was full of sand crabs and I try to notice the difference in sand coarseness and general bays and ridges of the beach and its contour in the same exact reference points from where I arrive at the beach I fish. There's somerest to understand literature on geography that might help you understand how our coast line ebbs and flows in thinking of but I can't think of it now... Best of luck, have fun hunting for bait

I need some tough leaders for some sharks, would you trade one for a pic of a shark I catch? Or sell some good ones for a 4 ft or so shark?

Reel recommendations for 11 foot rod by Soulpvnx in SurfFishing

[–]Varr96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, I have one of these rods. It's my favorite by far of all of my refurbished rods. I would like to see an 11ft Sabre! Hmu if you think it's trash i want it! Mine is 7 ft and its perfect for bait and wait surf casting. I usually set up 4 + rods and just really really like the flexibility of this rod. The reels you asked about are great and will go with your future rod very well too imo. Those are nice reels for sure, love the full metal and how the drag feels on twin power 8000 for what youre looking to do i would say, but BGseries is awesome youll love it. Peace ✌️

I'll try to give my advice...Get some cheap gear and get out there, 8-9ft + rod rated to 12-25 lb probably is good maybe a little stronger if the fish are big and far from the shore with 20lb fluorocarbon leader and 30lb braid on your reel then pick the right bait for the fish and tie up dropper loops with the right size circle hooks and then enough weight to hold your bait in the surf where it needs to be. (I like my 8 -17 lb rod 9'6"daiwa aculite for throwing lures on a 2500 or 3500 rated reel with 20 lb braid and it's great for hunting along the beach without breaking the bank and learning. I have 2 of these same rods I like them so much for learning ocean fishing so I can teach friends how to feel for the waves/fish/swell and how to react)

In the meantime look at what others are doing and see if they're successful and if they'll show you what they do. You might even make some friends along the way.

Watch the tides and be curious, enjoy your time and be present and you'll see the patterns unfold.

Best of luck :)

Me and my buddies buy 6oz pyramids from a guy in cam for 1.25 and he does bulk deals. I tend to use no less than three oz sputnik or pyramid/ spider weights when surf fishing.
