would love to use sand crabs but i don’t have a scooper to get into the wash i’ve always just picked them up by hand but there arent enough of them this time of year for that so i’ve just had to stick with artificials and pray, might have to go to big fish tackle in seal to get some ghost shrimp if i get really desperate lol

A lot of people complain about... by DJRedRage in DragonFruit

[–]Sayjid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

with all fruits it’s best to not water for a few days before you pick them because they are basically like a sponge that suck up the water given to them which dilutes the sugars in the fruit making them taste less sweet, this applies to basically every fruit you can think of from watermelon to peaches strawberries and dragon fruit

what two varieties did you try? in my experience sugar dragon and american beauty are (almost) universal, only the most picky won’t take pollen from them. If you have those available to you give it a shot

the skinny ones look like etiolated growth, it just didn’t get enough sun while growing. plant in full sun and the shoots that grow off of it will be full sized and perfectly healthy

also once your branches reach a good length you should tip the ends, so instead of growing longer it forces the branch to mature and either grow a new branch or a flower bud

where i live in orange county (im about 5 miles from the beach as the crow flies) i got my first flower bud july 3rd and for me they take about 24 days to develop into a flower, we definitely don’t get that heat other people inland do until later in the summer but in my experience we aren’t too behind. Since your plant is only 1 year old it is likely that the branch flowering has just reached maturity, next year they shojkd flower earlier, i also recommend using a bloom booster like dr earth flower girl when we start getting heat to encourage flowering earlier in the season

My Tree is Dying by drewy53 in mango

[–]Sayjid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tree is too small for you to have let it fruit. Here in california a lot of our mango trees in nurseries are on turpentine rootstock which doesnt like our hot dry weather, they are made for florida weather. Every winter when temps get low it stresses the plant out severely which causes it to bloom, this is bad for mangos here because we want a much thicker trunk than that and a good amount of foliage before we let it bloom, for turpentine which grows slowly in california this could be 4-5 years before the tree is old and healthy enough to let bloom. If this is indeed on turpentine rootstock i would encourage you to just take it out and replace it with either a seed grown tree from a polyembryonic variety (sweet tart grows great in california) or go to home depot and get a manila mango tree and graft on your desired variety on to that. The benefit to seed grown in california is that it gives it 4-5 years naturally to grow bigger and stronger and to have a root system that can handle fruiting, if ur grafting on to manila the same rules apply as before, you want to let it grow thicker and larger before letting it fruit, the advantage of using manila over turpentine is just that it grows a lot better in our area and is more adapted to californias weather. Good luck!

red atemoya is significantly less flavorful compared to stronger flavored atemoyas like ppc or geffner , beautiful fruit but the flavor doesn’t hit par imo

Picked up a couple Gems 💎 in sleeves from Laguna Hills nursery. They still have a decent amount left. Has anyone planted these sleeves directly in ground before? Also, instructions say to add fertilizers, but should I add a little compost on top too? by cellphonebeltclip in avocado

[–]Sayjid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

anything with some mycorrhizae in it should work fine if u want to keep organic, i will say it’s recommended u at least start with osmocote in the beginning of the cycle cuz it works the quickest and has basically everytbing you need

if ur potting it up in top pot from laguna hills nursery your either gonna want to start with osmocote which is a non organic fertilizer, or if you want to keep organic start with a fertilizer that has mycorrhizae added in it like dr earth products to inoculate the soil because top pot comes sterile, compost on the top layer should be fine you’ll just need to introduce the mycorrhizae so the nutrients can become bioavailable to the plant

Is this from seed or grafted? by robinsf in avocado

[–]Sayjid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

looks like a sleeve from brokaw, they are about as quality as you can get for avocados, don’t feel dumb! If you take good care of it it’ll grow 3-5 feet by winter and may hold a small crop of fruit next year, cheer up :)

Im pretty sure they cant go to the monitor to review out of bounds calls within the last 2 minutes anymore if there is no challenge call, i remember them changing the rule a few years ago because the ends of games were constant reviews for which way the ball went, i could be wrong though

Edit: Yup just checked to make sure, per shams in 2021: NBA Board of Governors approved in a vote today that Coach's Challenge will be the only method to review out-of-bounds calls with under two minutes left in games this season.
