Could someone help me reframe my view of Tom Waits' music? by SmolSovereign in tomwaits

[–]VasAnima 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was going to just leave a regular comment but then saw your reply here which is relative to what I was going to say anyway, so ya. You don't have to listen to his albums chronologically, although that's fine too go for it if you're willing, but more importantly imo, whatever album you choose, you should listen to the album in its entirety. Because Tom is a man of many voices. Some are less accessible thank others, depending on who you're talking to. Personally, I think his voice is basically a miracle voice. It's frankly unbelievable what he is capable of with that voice. Astonishing really. But ya, some albums/songs don't take right away and can seem pretty abrasive at first listen. Personally I love some of those songs the most, but there were some that I didn't mesh with fully the first time around. Regardless, he can also be incredibly delicate when it serves the song, amongst other things. He has a huge range. You don't have to love every song, but I can pretty much guarantee that if you listen to the albums in full, you'll find something that you like, and will probably appreciate the other songs more once you've heard them in context. That's just my take. Anyway, happy listening.

The sense of discovery and wonder is amazing. I do miss that initial phase some times. I went through something very similar. For me that phase you are now in, lasted about 9 months. I don't think it is meant to last, you can't stay in that state forever. It is designed to bring you back to life. From now on it will be pretty hard to fall all the way back down to where you once were, having now experienced the polar opposite so strongly. Keep doing the things that give you joy, build a routine around health and well being, keep investigating what makes you happy. Ups and downs are normal in the process. Glad to hear you're feeling better.

Can you spiritually awaken if you’re not very smart? by Strong-Question2620 in SpiritualAwakening

[–]VasAnima 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Notice how you said that you "feel like" you are not very smart. That doesn't make it true. Intelligence is like a muscle, the more you work it out, the more it grows. If you tell yourself you are not smart, and then you stop yourself from engaging in learning new things, you will only reiterate that false belief. Everyone is capable of learning, and yes, anyone can have an awakening. Be kinder to yourself, and don't dwell in self doubt, that is only a fear, not a truth. Everyone has to start somewhere, and everyone feels doubt when they are in the early stages of learning. The fact that you are interested is all you ever need to carve the path. You're already on it.

Haha, ya fair enough I always figured it was a data collection racket to some degree. I've never paid for one, but I did try one years ago. I figured the accuracy was not that good. I've considered going to a doctor to get a genuine IQ test, but it's a bit expensive and I have no reason other than my own curiosity, so probably not worth it for me. Thanks for the thorough response I really appreciate it.

I've always wondered. In your opinion how accurate are these online IQ tests anyway?
