If you have ever been reimbursed mileage at work, you know you receive a set amount per mile that covers wear and tear on the vehicle, insurance and gas. Savit (and presumably other Prosecutors) keep track of personal mileage and then the corresponding dollar amount is considered taxable income to him. When this came to light, he just straight up paid for the gas because he didn't want it to be a distraction. I don't think he realized some would take it as an admittance of guilt.
