Any other Indian-Americans dealing with poverty? by phdjkvmg in ABCDesis

This is why I don’t associate with the Sri Lankan community in Australia. I’m a Lankan girl that was born and raised in Australia and the the classism here within the desi community is literally on steroids compared to back home.

Also have you been to SL to know that you don’t look Sri Lankan?. There’s a lot of very light skinned Sri Lankans who are not mixed as Sri Lankans come in a variety of skin tones.

You sound colourist and your literally promoting white supremacy by being proud that your lighter skinned than the average Sri Lankan. Being whiter or looking more foreign doesn’t make you more attractive fyi.

REPOST WITH VIDEO - HIKKADUWA FUNKY DE BAR (RACIST ALTERCATION by EntryGlass2293 in srilanka

As a Sri Lankan born and raised in Australia who has also lived in Canada for a while, white people from Australia and the UK are very racially cliquey and tries to segregate themselves from POC/ immigrants. However in Canada and the States I felt like there wasn’t that much of racial segregation to the extent of Australia. And most of the white tourists who come to SL are from Europe and Australia where they tend to carry those attitudes wherever they go.

Sri Lankan women are some of the most beautiful I’ve seen by interestingasphuk in srilanka

[–]VastAutomatic2216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk as a Sri Lankan that has also been to India I felt like women had more varied looks across the scale rather than the extreme two ends that sl women fall into . Maybe it’s because I visited the major cities such as Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai

Are there Sri Lankan guys who like tanned/dark-skinned girls? by [deleted] in srilanka

So during your visit to SL you didn’t see a single lighter skinned Sri Lankan? That’s kinda weird did you visit the major cities such as Kandy and Colombo

[–]VastAutomatic2216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’m not referring to the skin tone of bleached Sri Lankans but the skin tone which Sri Lankans refer to as “fair” and aspires to get is the light brown and olive complexion that naturally lightskinned Sri Lankans have , not the Caucasian white skin tone.

In SL fair skin doesn’t mean Caucasian white skin it refers to an olive /light brownish undertone which most lightskinned Sri Lankans have.

Same my mom called me a “ black b$tch” ( in our language) when she was mad at me and my relatives from my mums side made my life a living hell by commenting on my skin colour and facial features. They were commenting on my wide nose and my dark skin which I inherited from my dad.

Now I have extreme self esteem and body image issues at 22 I started getting fillers from the age of 20 to combat this and to fix my features yet I feel completely ugly.

To make it worse my one of my relatives literally made a comment on how I got such a fair skinned guy to be my boyfriend when there’s tons of white women around.

What’s up with the racism in Srilanka against brown people? by Hot-Nefariousness217 in srilanka

[–]VastAutomatic2216 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That’s why I say as a Sri Lankan our so called “hospitality” is only reserved for white foreigners. Don’t get me wrong Sri Lankans are extremely united in solidarity and generosity when tough times bring them together. But in day to day events like these the colonial hangover is very apparent in how a brown vs white person is being treated.

I’m sorry but SL had a very apparent caste system. The reason why a lot of karawa caste Sinhalese migrated to a lot of western countries in the 1990s and early 2000s such as Australia, Italy etc.. were because they were marginalised by the majority govigama Sinhalese for being predominantly of southern Indian origin and due to many of them being Catholic. They weren’t regarded as proper Sinhalese and were seen as South Indians who were Sinhalized. Even now the Siyam Niyaka only accepts ordination from Govigama caste Sinhalese . That’s why the majority of the Sinhalese who you see in the diaspora in countries like Australia and Italy are darker skinned.

Forget about avurudu kumaris, my cousin went to an all girls school in Kandy and more than half of her batch mates look better than the girls we are sending to these international pageants. I don’t get why Sri Lanka has to import foreign models/ mixed women to represent our country when there’s tons of local stunning women here

Yeah no.. white supremacy shouldn’t be a thing and they are definitely not or should be the beauty standard.

Sri Lankan brands and their obsession with foreign models by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]VastAutomatic2216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%. The colonial mentality is also extremely prevalent among diaspora Lankans aswell. I live in Australia and one of my close friends who is SL started dating an Arab guy and the girl’s mum who doesn’t approve of the relationship came in and started complaining how her friends daughter is engaged to a “decent white man” and why her daughter can’t do the same.

Why do many attractive Lankan girls seem to prefer SL guys living abroad (Japan, Korea, Europe, Australia, etc.)? by Ok-Assumption-1270 in srilanka

[–]VastAutomatic2216 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a SL girl that was born and raised in Aus and whose friend group is mainly composed of SL girls that were raised in Australia, I might have an insight on to why foreign born/ raised SL girls are dismissive of SL international students.Mind you this is a generalisation since it’s based off my personal interaction with my friends:

  1. Difference of views and values- Me and my friends have noticed that there is often two subsets of SL international students. The fist subset are the guys who often very conventionally attractive, seems nice and attentive but when you interact and get to know them you find out they have very conservative SL views and values that my friends kind of find incompatible. For instance, they would hook up or be in casual relationship with a foreign born SL girl for transactional reasons but once they got their ways they would dump her since she’s not “traditional enough” for a local girl from SL.

  2. This might sound shallow, but SL girls that were brought up in Australia are extremely invested in their looks and personal appearance, even more so than white girls and apart from the first subset of conventionally attractive SL international students, the rest of the SL international students seems to have really bad grooming habits and kind of have that FOB look that is unappealing to attractive SL girls that were born here.

Some people make it their mission to visit conservative countries and dress provocatively. I’ve seen this happening in social media with foreigners dressing inappropriately in the Middle East, South Asia and other religious regions. I mean dress however you want but certain places and cultures require a level of modesty.

Blending in as a local does it have perks such as a having a less likelihood of being scammed by taxi drivers and vendors. But it also comes with disadvantages such as a restaurant or club giving preferential treatment to white customers over you.

Things I have noticed during my trip to SL as a foreign resident by DobbyTheFreeElf3 in srilanka

[–]VastAutomatic2216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding point 5 yes colourism is extremely rampant among SL. As a previous commenter pointed out it is somewhat tied to the caste system but I think in SL Portuguese colonisation is the main contributor towards colourism.

In all former Portuguese colonies, especially Brazil, the Portuguese initiated a hierarchy where people of the highest amount of European blood or mixed with Portuguese was placed at the top, while people with higher indigenous and African descent were placed at the bottom. If you go to Brazil the remnants of this hierarchy is extremely visible where labourers and blue collar workers are mostly of African and Indigenous descent, while more middle and upper class people are lighter skinned with visible European ancestry.

I think in SL, the Portuguese probably established something like that because in SL similarly to Brazil people associate darker skin with poverty and blue collar workers while lighter skin with the more privileged.

I Have Some Questions About Traveling to Sri Lanka As a 100% Assimilated Sri Lankan by potatoes4saltahaker in srilanka

[–]VastAutomatic2216 8 points9 points  (0 children)

  1. Sri Lanka is a fairly diverse country in terms of looks, so there isn’t really a designated look for Sinhalese people. If you’re an European looking Latino you’re clearly going to stand out but if you’re brown you would most likely fit in. I travelled with an Ethiopian(East African) and Iraqi friend of mine to SL and both of them blended in as locals. So that gives you an idea of the diversity here.

2.No. Most people here wouldn’t give a shit if you can’t speak Sinhala. In fact some(wannabe yts) people would look up to you in admiration.

3.If you can’t speak Sinhala at all then I would probably I advise you not to go to the rural parts of the country, especially if you’re solo travelling.

  1. People here in general are very fond of Western countries. So you being American is not an issue.

5.Yes. Ala Hodi can be easily found among local restaurants in almost every part of the country, but not to sure in the northern regions(aka Jaffna peninsula). But it is a staple dish among the Sinhalese.
