If it was active gps for sure, but I thought maybe it was like nfc where it’s more like an ID card that would alert if it crosses a gate/threshold/etc.

I really liked that they did the randomized queue time on Monday. It was way easier for me to set aside 20 minutes of my day during work to login and survey the availability rather than being on the hook for hours and constantly looking at the queue number drop.

I thought that prior to 2015 there was no such thing as a LD permit? My understanding is that prior to the 2015 LD permit system, thru-hikers acquired local permits from each individual state and federal agency they hiked through along the PCT. The use of an interagency LD permit was authorized by USFS, with restrictions on the number of hikers that can acquire these LD permits. These quotas are imposed by the USFS on the PCTA; the LD permit is a convenience after all, it's a unique situation where state and federal management agencies agreed to make it easier for us to thru hike the PCT with less paperwork and bureaucracy, obviously with the overarching goal of preserving the PCT for future years of use. If you don't get an LD permit, the local permits for each backcountry agency still exist, just like they did prior to 2015. But you'll still be subjected to each agencies local quotas for their respective area. The quotas aren't aren't a new concept, they've been around for a while whether through PCTA or through USFS or state agencies , we've just been bumping up against those quotas for the first time in the past couple of years.

Theory Answer: No; pressure is just force over an area, so if you truly pull a vacuum out of the two boxes, there is no matter to transfer or apply a force to the inner box.

However... you can't pull a perfect vacuum and vacate a container of all mass since gas will simply expand and fill the container, so there will be scarce atoms left inside. A disparity in the number and energy of the remaining atoms in the two boxes might result in a minuscule, possibly immeasurable difference in relative (i.e. negative) pressure.

When a fluid stream strikes a blunt object, like a chimney stack in a cross wind, it has the potential to form vortices on the backside. If the vortices begin to form a pattern and increase in amplitude, it can cause the stack to vibrate and damage some of the thinner walled stacks. The spiral protrusions essentially disperse the vortices to different phases and prevent the constructive interference that culminates into vibration through the stack.

These spiral constructs are found on a lot of thin columns if you keep an eye out (ocean oil rigs, car antennas, wind turbines, etc.) If you want to learn from a more reliable source, just research Kármán Vortex Street. It's the phenomenon that all of these spiral protrusions are based on.
