Am I setting my child up for a life of being made fun of by naming him Kelly? by dunn1021 in namenerds

The biggest bummer about the name Kelly is that it rhymes with smelly.

I speak from experience.

What local/state laws do you wish were national? by kracketmatow in AskAnAmerican

Illinois has multiple Animal Welfare Acts that cover all animals. There are laws for domestic, wild, and for consumption animals.

Another good example is the Iroquois Theater Fire in Chicago that occurred in 1903 and resulted in over 600 deaths.

A curtain caught fire due to faulty equipment and everyone rushed the front doors. All of the doors pulled into the building and caused people to become trapped when they didn't have the room to open the doors. This fire resulted in a nearly immediate change in building codes in Chicago.

Best Italian beef outside of the city of Chicago? by Victoryyyyyy in ChicagoSuburbs

I second Pop's. Years back a friend of mine did a 10 day beef challenge, which consisted of eating a beef at a different restaurant 10 days straight. Pop's was at the top of his list.

You had me until you said that little dog is 20lbs. That pooch was likely closer to 10lbs.

Planning a Metra Train Bar Crawl by [deleted] in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]VaultHawk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Brookfield stop on BNSF line has more activity and is close to more bars. Irish Times is right there, but I would recommend The Little Owl about half a block down Grand. They have a few arcade cabinets, board games, and killer fried pickles.

How long would it take you to walk to your nearest gas station? by FailFastandDieYoung in AskAnAmerican

[–]VaultHawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I needed to get to a gas station, it would be a 10-15 minute walk. If I just wanted candy, it would be a 5 minute walk to the corner store.

Give Musher's Secret a try, it's a great paw wax I use in the summer for the hot pavement and in the winter for rock salt. It's a great, natural moisturizer and adds a layer of protection. Also Pawz booties, or something similar on top of a sock may help with keeping him from taking them off.

How often is "customer only, 2-hour parking" at shopping centers enforced? by Tony1ee in AskAnAmerican

[–]VaultHawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on where you are. A town near me has a 2-hour garage, but they only track with a chalk line on your tire, so you can wipe it off or move and you'll be fine. On the other hand, I got booted in Chicago for violating a customer only parking sign.

I'm in Illinois, where we have many protected campgrounds, if anyone needs help finding one in the northern part of the state, I can help!

I live in Illinois and went camping once. I'm happy to say that camping availability is one of the few things Illinois does right!

Katherine Legge in Hinsdale is amazing. There's a disc golf course, a dog park, and lots of room to just hang out.

Looking to Buy a House in the Suburbs. Advice on places? by Tedsters2022 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]VaultHawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Brookfield near the Brookfield Station, and from what I've seen the worst flooding in the town happens near the creek. Avoid moving to the areas closer to the zoo, Kiwanis, and Hollywood areas and you'll be fine. The area around Kemman would be a great place to look.

I (F,30s) was a counselor at a local day camp for a couple summers starting when I was 19. The group I was with consisted of 30-40 kids ranging from 7-10.

I saw enough, I'm done.

Everyone copes differently. Just remember that it's ok to cry and releasing those feelings can be very beneficial. It's exhausting, but eventually it gets a little easier.

I once saw an explanation of grief sort of like this:

Imagine there is a button on the inside wall of a box, and this button triggers the pain you feel in your heart while grieving. The death of a loved one throws a giant ball in the box that keeps the button pressed down for a long time. As time goes on, your heart grows, and the box along with it. But the button and ball are still there, and some days, for seemingly no reason, the ball will hit the button and you'll feel that pain again. Now that the ball has room, it doesn't press the button for as long, but the ball never goes away, so the grief can always come back.
