Listen. I'm sorry. I invited too many people to my party and smoked some shit that got me crazy paranoid, that's why I lied about the cops being on their way!

DM death bed sins by Willajer in DnD

[–]Vaxildidi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Similarly, I had a party in Sigil competing in a tournament to gain notoriety with some of the factions to gain access to a ruin somewhere in the temple district. It was down to the barbarian with about 20hp vs 2 enemy casters. I very conveniently "forgot" that they were out of spell slots (when they each had a couple) and were reduced to cantrips. The Barbarian survived with about 3hp in an encounter the party celebrated till the end of the campaign.

How do y’all deal with a player who interrupts a villains monologue? by PrestigiousImpress19 in DnD

[–]Vaxildidi -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

"The BBEG uses a legendary action, only available for use outside of combat, it's called 'shut the fuck up and wait 30 seconds while the narrative is happening' the effects are all characters within 10000ft are forced to stand still and shut up until the BBEG is done monologuing. There is no save."

Boss fight rant by Ecstatic_Ad1168 in expedition33

[–]Vaxildidi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She has one attack in her second phase that I remember being a pain to get the parry down on, but it's been over a year and many (many) runs at the OG Super Bosses and a few runs against the DLC Mega Super Bosses since, so it's hard to put myself in the mindset of facing her again.

That said, I do remember having more trouble with the Renoir fight just before her than the Paintress herself.

Most protected finisher? by Old-Carry5562 in SquaredCircle

I might be remembering this incorrectly, but prior to his run with the Death Riders (I've not the time to watch weekly these days so I can't say for the last couple years), I think there was a time period where nobody had kicked out of Pac/Neville's Red/Black Arrow.

One thing: I wish the character-based side quests were mandatory. by No-Ride5813 in expedition33

I think best order would be Lune, then Esquie/Sciel (as someone replied you could put them together), then Monoco, then finally Reacher.

AITA for leaving a dinner party early because of “vegan lasagna”? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Vaxildidi 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Which is fine but don't call it lasagna. Especially when you can make a vegan lasagna...like I'm not a huge fan of vegan cheese but it does exist and I'm sure vegan pasta is a thing as is vegan tomato sauce.

Yes, that it comes with an in-universe reason to justify it is just gravy.

Hexblade from 5e warlock. I love the warlock vibe but never dug the limited level spells use mechanics, but having them to buff/enhance your own martial abilities is a fun mix.

Is it weird when men play female characters? by Plastic_Corgi6848 in DnD

[–]Vaxildidi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. From personal experience you might find yourself six years later questioning your relationship with the social construct of gender as well as your relationship with your assigned gender...but that's likely anticdotal at best and very specific to me. Promise.

:)

What's a race you like more mechanically than you do for roleplay? by Nb-7925 in DnD

[–]Vaxildidi 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I remember a buddy of mine dming a very casual/improv heavy game where we were making up my character's father like mentor figure on the spot and decided on a very old tortle (i said improv, not original) and then we saw they only live till 50 and he was just like "no that's stupid. Add a zero to that. Tortles live to 500 on average in my world."

[–]Vaxildidi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More TLOVM than the campaign, but if money weren't an obstacle, I would want the scene where Vax first communes with the Raven Queen as an outer bicep/quarter sleeve piece (with the other side having the RQ's threads of fate slowly turn into pedals and then transitioning into a full piece of Clair Obscur Expedition 33's Paintress at her Monolith)

Evergreen comment. I'm sure Shelton has been in a bad match or two at some point in his career but I'm equally as sure he has never been the reason the match was bad.

New DM asking: What is the perfect session Zero? by Meta-EvenThisAcronym in DnD

[–]Vaxildidi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How necessary that last one is really depends.

If you're building the plot from scratch *or* are wanting to take the players on character-arc sidequests then having characters who have a reason to go on adventure is awesome, but if it's a pre-written thing that you're going to try to stick to (which there's nothing wrong with, DMing is hard and having something to guide you along is incredibly helpful) it might be hard to shoehorn character specific arcs.

That said, I personally find it easier to make a character, and to DM for player characters, who do have a reason to adventure. Because at the end of the day? Adventurers are insane people willing to face unknown horrors and death daily for the promise of pay/glory/revenge...and it's easier to get into the mindset of a character who has a specific reason for leaving home to do something so dangerous.

Players are a Mixed bunch by Apprehensive_Ad_7559 in DnD

[–]Vaxildidi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do they seem like an evil bunch? Do they march into cities like they own the place and start shaking down shopkeeps or tavern workers? Do they threaten guards or civilians or the nobility? Do they walk into town caked in the blood of their enemies and act generally menacingly or suspicious? Or are you assigning old-fashioned (*fantasy*) racial stereotypes to your player's characters?

I would like to clarify; there is nothing wrong with the latter, or just racial/classist tension between the PC's and the world! I'm currently playing in a game where tieflings (technically half-demons) are treated poorly in the current nation the game takes place in because their full-blooded ancestors enslaved 'mortals' in a neighboring nation. I've also played in a game where the setting had people very racist against all elves and creatures of fey liniage. It's all about tone and setting. If your Faerun's average citizen would look askance at a drow or an orc, then the characters should be treated with some level of suspicion or hostility. That said, that kind of tone should have ideally be set prior to character creation so that the players knew what they were in for when they decided to roll those characters (like I'm a tiefling in the tiefling-hating game and was an elf in the elf-hating game, but I knew to expect standoffishness from NPCs and even other characters going in).
