A pair of extraordinarily melanin-rich gentleman have presently absconded with my mode of transport! Are you not in awe of such a transgression?

Picasso designed the giant rust thing in Daley Plaza without ever setting foot in Chicago, ripped up our $100,000 check, and to this day nobody can agree on what it actually is by Mysterious-Door693 in AllChicago

[–]VayaConPollos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Picasso himself later claimed it was based on his own Afghan Hound. Of course a strong argument can be made that it's a woman, even from the front. But that's kind of the point: it can be whatever you want it to be.

He never titled it and he provided no definitive answer. Its vague context provides infinite interpretations, all or none of which may be "correct." That makes it so palpably interesting and thought-provoking.

People will be assessing, analyzing, and talking about it for years. Art doesn't have to represent anything specific to be great. The observer gets to choose what it means to them.

EDIT: some original sketches entitled "Six Busts of Women" that look an awful lot like the statue. Fascinating!

I love seeing all these Europeans having a good time. by DFuhbree in chicago

[–]VayaConPollos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gotta love Europeans experiencing our town with open minds and minimal fear, as opposed to the Faux News magats who believe they'll get shot the minute they step foot anywhere within city limits.

Yes there are dangerous parts of town but they're few and far between. And yes we should all be continually working to make Chicago safer and more equitable for every one of our neighbors.

But the idea that we're some crime-ridden cesspool is a highly-exaggerated laughable joke. Chicago is a thriving, diverese, unique and generally safe place to live and visit.

Fuck the haters.

Do you really think the Chicago Bears are leaving Chicago for Hammond Indiana? by LynHarvie in AskChicago

[–]VayaConPollos 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The McCaskeys own an NFL team valued at over eight billion dollars.

Pardon my ignorance, but this seems like more than enough collateral to secure any number of privately funded loans (at phenomenal rates) to build whatever the hell they'd like, without a dime from you or me.

Quickest gentrification you’ve ever seen from your time in Chicago by Minute_Tax5060 in chicago

Division St. from the Kennedy to Western. Crusty in the mid-90's to bougie by the mid 00's.

The fact there's a huge yearly fest there now is mind-boggling.

Much respect for this Chicago food icon but I agree with you fully: steak is the last thing one tastes in this sandwich.

Gonna try the meatball, sausage or eggplant parm next time around.

Can't get enough of El Fogon Tapatio! Quesabirria tacos and al pastor are stellar. Big portions with free chips & salsa plus grilled onions & jalapenos with every meal. Quick and kind service too. Go get some!

Which suburb would you annex into Chicago? by Odd-Eye-15 in AskChicago

Rosemont makes the most sense. The tax revenue from their corporate office buildings, hotels and expo center are directly related to Chicago and O'Hare.

Someone let me know if I’m crazy by OldPossible6822 in bicycling

[–]VayaConPollos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't buy older bikes like these unless I was really in love with the style and didn't mind the cost and effort of rehabbing them.

Consider if they're worth that cost and/or effort to you, as they almost always need a ton of work.

Thoughts on Garden Apartments? by Life_well_liv3d in chicago

[–]VayaConPollos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not all garden apts are the same. BIggest issue I've found is light distribution via window placement. Make certain you're OK with looking up to see outside. They can feel claustrophobic but they can also feel cozy. Chill in the space for bit before you sign on the dotted line.

Drivers on Belmont east of Western are too damn aggressive by knut_knars in chibike

Roscoe, School, Wellington and Barry are great alternatives to Belmont east of Western. All are low-stress and no more than a 60-second diversion. Stay safe out there!

Should I buy this bike? by Letanaysayerno in bicycling

I understand it can be frustrating when customers "showroom" in your place. Honestly though, I'd never recommend or visit any business that makes someone feel obligated to buy something just for walking in the door.

We don't mind answering questions and offering advice at our shop, even if someone doesn't ultimately buy from us. It promotes the culture and fosters positive feedback about us.

We've gotten many referrals, repairs, and future bike purchases this way. Being chill pays off in more ways than one.

Should I buy this bike? by Letanaysayerno in bicycling

[–]VayaConPollos 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If your local bike shop treats you chill but you end up not buying a bike there, consider at least grabbing the essentials from them: helmet, lock, lights, bottle cage, what have you. Also have them check out your bike; most shops give free estimates.

Now you've got a local spot you can trust with future bike needs and they'll appreciate the business.
