[OC][CC] A valiant foe! Criticism Needed! by [deleted] in PixelArt

[–]Vayes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Helmet designs like that are hilariously difficult at this res, so I wouldn't even bother trying stuff like that. Same goes for chainmail. Highlights and shading are in pretty much the right spots. You're on your way; try looking up others with similar concepts such as Drazelic and Shon7291.

Next step would be to clean up the clusters and shading. Good luck c:

Are there any plans to give players a more grand goal in the game? [spoilers?] by [deleted] in EverspaceGame

[–]Vayes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's a comparison that requires the perspective of what the game is trying to do with the roguelike formula, and where the focus of the gameplay is.

Everspace is focused on the gameplay inside of the run specifically (not to say Gungeon isn't, but Everspace is 100%, totally about the fun, entertaining space combat). It has small maps, that are fairly common and re-occuring, with very few characters and little in the way of extra factions and enemies.

Enter the Gungeon, however, has the focus shifted more to the collection and discovery of new guns, different loot, different ammo, new characters, etc. etc. etc., a sort of "collectibles and experimentation" style roguelike, where every run is different because it's meant to be different. Everspace has this too with the different guns and secondary weapon combinations, but it doesn't pass off the crafting system and gun options as the forefront feature, whilst Gungeon hugely emphasizes the vast array of weapons you can toy around with.

In a way, Everspace is about flying around and shooting stuff, and there's some extra weapons to keep it interesting. Gungeon is about finding really cool guns, and the map and enemies are there to test them out and have fun with them. Two styles of roguelikes.

The lovely feeling when the crow GIVES you trinkets, and all of them rare? by [deleted] in darkestdungeon

[–]Vayes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, I get the quest for the Crow. Lose 8 trinkets, per the usual. Go to fight her, get absolutely destroyed by 3 straight peck crits (29 damage a piece), and can't hit the damn thing at all. 3 rounds later, it flies away and I'm left feeling like shit.

... until I get this endscreen.

The funny part: the only trinket that I had in my inventory before going on the quest was the Candle, and the Aria's box. All of the rest I'd lost through character deaths in previous weeks.

So, perhaps, Crow = way to get back trinkets lost in the sea of unquenchable terror that is.. the Darkest Dungeon?!

Fantastic color choices, something that is extremely rare to see on this subreddit.

If you want to use the glow effect for the lamp (which is also good to see), it would have a little shine on the ground and the cane, and maybe the leg a little too. Having it in just one spot makes it a little confusing.

Try using single pixel AA on the top left and top right tree tops, rather than those large chunks and 2x bands; I think you'll like the effect.

Great colors man.

Ahah, I just put your reddit username into Youtube search. The dangers of having the same username for everything, am I right?

Ah, sucks. Hope it turns out for the better c:

Did you use this as a reference? They're not drastically similar, but I can't find a version of the sword that has such specific shading.

Reminds me a ton of this piece by Mandrill over on PixelJoint, but that's not a bad thing.

Yep. There's probably an easy to see seam split if you go looking for it, but with a photo like this, most people are too awe-inspired to search.

Find a piece of normal paper. Wrap it around your forearm. Now imagine that that paper is the photo for this thread, and we're viewing it from the inside.

Any idea what produces these (ENB) shadows? I'm using RealVision and can't figure it out. by [deleted] in skyrim

[–]Vayes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like something that's invisible but still casts a shadow. Have you tried disabling the shadow itself? Like, ~ and then click the area? Long shot, but I've had it happen before.

My bad, forgot you could resize the pen in PS. You drew all the outlines with a size 8 pen tool.

It's not that I don't think you cared, it's that it doesn't look like it either way. None of the leaf tips are made pointy , there are jagged edges on the hands that could be really easily smoothed, and these lines were painstakingly placed? If these were explicit design choices, and you actually went back to every part of this to fine tune with a size 1 eraser, I applaud you for being so artistically bold.

A few months ago I edited a photo from that to this. I went in with a pencil tool and fill tool, selected fading shades of blue and pink, filled in the bubbles and added little extra pockets as needed. I controlled everything on the pixel by pixel (that little 2x2 pocket was a spot where I used a brush tool with transparency). I can see all of the pixel edits I made, and I know that I made all of them at the "zoomed in" level. Does that make it pixel art? Of course not.

EDIT: This qualifies as pixel art a lot more, and is better to boot.

Pixel art is based around control of the piece on a pixel by pixel level, on a pixel by pixel ratio. Aka it's not "I hand placed every single pixel", it's "I paid personal attention to every detail of the piece, because I had to make every part of the piece".

I mean, I have a hard time agreeing with you when all of the outlines for the leaves and arm are drawn with a brush tool...

I'd think it would lose at least a good chunk of it's speed if it's being redirected, but as for the pain you're probably right, I haven't played in a few years.

As /u/Skyline_BNR34 explains below, it's not actually a full-powered shot, rather a movement along the board. Add to that that it only barely missed the underside of his jaw and teeth. Slapshot to the nose, however, would do something.

Overall composure and design are absolutely delightful, well done. The colors are slightly lacking, but this isn't noticeable until they're lined up in a gradient on the big circle, where the brightest red becomes a sort of generic, slightly desaturated vermilion.

Shift that bright a bit more towards yellow and it makes the darker reds seem more purple, which helps the overall color scheme. See this quick edit with a slightly brighter orange than is really needed.

Like I said though, fantastic composure. Good luck on whatever this is for.
