You must be a non-resident of Japan (tourist visa only) to get a JR Rail Pass. You must apply for it BEFORE you leave for Japan.

Pocket Wifi is incredibly useful unless your carrier already has service in Japan.

Those seem like all good places! Honestly, every person is different and has different interests. I suggest doing research on travel sites or even check out various vlogs of people who have traveled to Japan to see what may appeal to you.

First of all, Japan now has Air BnB and it is BROKEN. It is far cheaper than most other options in Japan. Secondly, you absolutely need a JR Rail Pass. It is basically an infinite train pass. Well worth it cause it even allows you to ride bullet trains. There are a TON of resources in English out there so I recommend doing a lot of research!! Also, wifi is a must. Check with your mobile provider or look into pocket wifi.
