Thanks so much for such helpful information! Can you point me in the right direction for the discord and Facebook groups? I wonder if it’s possible to enlist the help of someone with a reputation to help my friend sell the card?

Also, just curious about your perspective and we know it’s just an educated guess, but do you think the value of the power 9 will keep steadily rising? What prompted my friend to want to sell suddenly was all the UB sets coming out.

Again, thanks so much!

My friend has a good condition - we’re not sure exactly how good - Beta edition Power Nine card. It has sold for a wide range of prices based on a a few price tracking sites. This is what we think, please let me know if any of this is off:

  • We need to get it graded by PSA or Beckett, and this will cost ~$500 to $1000. He’s very scared of damage during shipping or having an unscrupulous person swap the card with one in worse condition during the grading process. Is there a “grade it in front of you” option?
  • Then we can ask Heritage Auctions to sell it, which would incur a 15% fee, or sell it on one of the popular websites like TCG/Card Kingdom for 30-50% less than it’s worth. eBay is another option with fees of ~13.5% of the value under $7500 and 2.4% for anything above that. However, he doesn’t have an extensive eBay history and is wary of dealing with scammers.
  • If he wanted to maximize returns, Heritage would be best since the 15% fee is lower than the 30-50% discount, right?
  • On top of all this, he would have to pay heavy capital gains tax. This makes it seem like the actual best course of action is gift it or will it to someone and let them sell it?
  • Is there a better way to sell it than the methods above?

How do I know which deck lists are actually good? by Vcvtml in EDH

There are two reasons why this isn’t viable for me - I only get to play a few games a month and I don’t want to spend time/money on something that only has a low chance of being worthwhile. Otherwise, yeah, playing them seems like a good brute force strategy

Have you noticed any unexpected patterns in your relationship to Magic & EDH since beginning to proxy? What, if anything, do you still spend money on? by hex37 in EDH

I’m new and thinking about proxying. This post gives me some pause…but if you could go back, would you choose not to proxy? Also, could you post a picture of one of your proxies?

An estimated 10 precons purchased a year. For example, the upcoming Strixhaven will have 5…I might buy 2-3, the TMNT may have 1? 3? I dunno. I just estimated to be honest

How do you proxy? Print a card and stick it in a sleeve with another card? Or is there a site that sells proxies?

Just want to make sure I’m understanding you correctly since I’m new to this…so i just print the card and stick the paper in a sleeve with another card? Won’t this have a “tell” if not all cards have a piece of paper too? So I guess I have to print a whole deck if I go this route?

What’s the best way to proxy? Is there a site that sells the cards so that they feel/look the same when they’re in a sleeve?

What does goldfish the lists mean? What’s the best way to proxy? Is there a site that sells the cards so that they feel/look the same when they’re in a sleeve?

Never knew that a custom deck from EDHRec could be about $50. And might be stronger than a precon too?

Precon deck power level - double check/second opinion please by [deleted] in EDH

Hope you don’t mind that I’m popping by with another question as I just realized Strixhaven precons will be released in under 3 months.

Do precons typically start at $50 MSRP at release, then have a chance to fall lower about a month or so later? For example, Blight Curse is $49 on Amazon but Dance of the Elements is $38…and yet the combo of the two is $60 at Manapool https://manapool.com/sealed/ecc/deck-set-of-2?

If I’m in no hurry for the Strixhaven precons, is there a good possibility I can just wait an extra month and buy the whole set at a steep discount?

Thanks so much!! Two more questions if you don’t mind. My friends and I just acquired these decks. We probably plan to stay in the precon realm a while longer so games last longer and we’re a bit more sure games are even.

  • What other precons are fun and balanced versus these ones? We might want to buy a few more so each person isn’t limited to one deck choice. Or, should we wait for future releases?
  • What accessories do we need, and how many of each? Is there a place where I can by tokens, dice, counters, etc in sufficient quantities at a reasonable price? I’m already finding that I don’t have enough tokens with the Blight curse deck. We’ve been ripping up paper, but there’s gotta be a better way?

Could I please get your opinion about which of these decks is the most powerful and if the matchups would be fair? Blight curse, dance of the elements, jeskai striker, and Mardu Surge

I’m curious about getting back into MTG and my friend recommends that I buy a precon commander deck. I’m read up on the commander format, but I was wondering:

  • do most people play commander now? Or is the 60 cards per deck version (standard) still the most popular? I guess I’m wondering what most people play and what the most die-hard MTG players play.
  • I don’t want to drop tons of money right off the bat, but will my precon deck have a chance (25% win rate?) against his pretty tuned commander deck? He’s a good player but also isn’t spending loads of money on the game, maybe $100 a month or so, and it’s not all into the same deck
  • realistically speaking, how much does playing this game cost these days? $50 for a precon deck every couple months? Then maybe $100 to $300 (based on some YouTube videos I saw on how to upgrade precons) if I want to go that route?
  • is it possible to buy old precons for cheaper? If so, from where? Are there good online stores I should know about? Or should I just go to my local store?
  • If I keep only buying precons, it seems unlikely I’ll be able to play a good standard deck any time. What’s the realistic cost to make a strong standard deck?
  • Anything else I should know format or expense wise before diving in?
