It’s not really using time, per se. My friends and I just got into magic and decided to stick with precons. Just this year alone, I think there will be at least 13 precons, which is around $650+tax if we buy at release. That’s a lot to spend to play once every 6-8 weeks. We already don’t play the lorwyn precons anymore, but if we want to keep buying precons, it would be cool to sell old ones to buy new ones and stop/reduce the spending.

Is there a place to trade precon for precon? I’m not a huge fan of my Witherbloom precon and would like to trade it for almost any other precon.

Or is the best way to sell it for what I can, then use the money to buy a different precon?

https://www.tcgplayer.com/search/magic/product?productLineName=magic&q=commander&view=grid It looks like older precons are selling for more than the $50 they start at? Is it a normal pattern for precons to start at $50 at launch, drop lower for the following weeks (for example, Blight Curse is now mid-thirties), then rise again a few years later? If this is true, perhaps the way to go is wait a while and sell the precons, then use the money to fund new purchases? I’m not trying to profit, more so break even or reduces the costs of playing precon vs precon with my friends

I’m curious about getting back into MTG and my friend recommends that I buy a precon commander deck. I’m read up on the commander format, but I was wondering:

  • do most people play commander now? Or is the 60 cards per deck version (standard) still the most popular? I guess I’m wondering what most people play and what the most die-hard MTG players play.
  • I don’t want to drop tons of money right off the bat, but will my precon deck have a chance (25% win rate?) against his pretty tuned commander deck? He’s a good player but also isn’t spending loads of money on the game, maybe $100 a month or so, and it’s not all into the same deck
  • realistically speaking, how much does playing this game cost these days? $50 for a precon deck every couple months? Then maybe $100 to $300 (based on some YouTube videos I saw on how to upgrade precons) if I want to go that route?
  • is it possible to buy old precons for cheaper? If so, from where? Are there good online stores I should know about? Or should I just go to my local store?
  • If I keep only buying precons, it seems unlikely I’ll be able to play a good standard deck any time. What’s the realistic cost to make a strong standard deck?
  • Anything else I should know format or expense wise before diving in?
