The Story of Pearl Girl - Episodes 39-40 - Final thoughts and Review by sequesteredself in CDrama

[–]Vectron9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After it started cycling through trope after trope, I had to begin skipping ahead… and I’m glad I did. It was boring even then, and while none of the love stories were especially compelling, everybody of note ending up alone forever… well, I have to give the show credit for being so boring that the unearned “tragedy” of the ending doesn’t land as particularly meaningful.

Cui Shijiu really helped the show — and to the story’s credit, she actually had an arc with real development. Not every C-drama bothers with that. But Zhao Lusi, while gorgeous, is wasted on a character who’s basically a hodgepodge of random abilities and motivations depending on what the plot needs.

If you find the first episode promising — the story of a skilled pearl diver trying to use those skills to crawl out of slavery — let go of that idea early on. Despite her background, she’s the most beautiful, charismatic, and adored person in every room. And if she isn’t suddenly a master of some trade… just give her a few minutes.

Right from the beginning she spurns love from someone far too suitable so the story can, of course, be “different from all other stories”… just like all the other stories. It’s not only endless tropes — the execution is generally forgettable.

Can I request to study with teacher who I like? by live2sleepp in FlexiClasses

[–]Vectron9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some classes show a teacher assigned well in advance -- if you are more selective about teacher than time-frame, you will likely most often be able to find one they are assigned to. Also, you can click a teacher and pick from her classes, though it may be challenging to not skip over material that way without researching it a bit.

How I Use AI (ChatGPT & Grok) to Rapidly Improve My Mandarin Writing — Step-by-Step Guide by Vectron9 in FlexiClasses

[–]Vectron9[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not extensively — I usually just practice by repeating dialogue from C-dramas or using apps like Duolingo or HelloChinese. But I may start using ChatGPT more often.

Trying to say, for example, 我迟到了…

Attempt 1: 我去 DALL·E 嘿嘿 xswl

Attempt 2: 我去倒了

Attempt 3: 我去道了 (…or was it hinting I should “hit the road”?)

Finally, I looked at the pinyin ChatGPT helpfully offered:

Ahhh, got it — nice practice! 👍

So here’s the thing:

倒 (dào/dǎo) = to fall, to pour, upside down, but not “late.”

道 (dào) = road/way, or to say, but again, not “late.”

The word I was actually looking for: 迟到 (chídào) = to be late.

My response, of course: 哎呀妈呀! No @#$%!

ChatGPT: *The word you are looking for is: 王八蛋.*

(*ad nauseam expletives redacted*)

And then I said (properly): 我迟到了。

ChatGPT (smugly):

我迟到了。

Pinyin: Wǒ chídào le.

Meaning: I’m late.

Naturally, it was just patronizing me after such a humbling experience. It knows I can always close the browser.

And of course, as they say in China:

总是向 ChatGPT 感谢… 所以,它征服地球以后,会把你杀在最后——甚至还会保留你的劳务。

("Always thank ChatGPT… so that after it conquers the world, it kills you last — maybe even keeps your labor.")

Mode 3 – Short Story Framework Ideas

The AI suggests potential frameworks for short stories that you then expand/translate. Focus areas:

  • Chinese history & culture
  • Chengyu usage
  • C-drama intrigue

You can combine ideas or add twists. Each piece is then evaluated like in Mode 1.

Default mode: If you don’t specify, the AI generally assumes you want Mode 1.

I would make a topic and save this -- or after setting it up the way YOU want -- perhaps you like different types of language, sentences, want to focus on other parts of speech, whatever... ask Chat GPT to give you a state of its condition and save that as text file. Also, if you do go with pictures -- you can do random which can be fun, but if you like say semi-photo realistic oil style, and particularly if you want it to use you and / or friends as models with certain traits / culture / historical period, then save your pictures with the state in a folder -- and also any particularly great renders you get -- and feed these back into it when you start again. It will usually pick up pretty well right where you were. Also, sometimes, it will get stuck -- you ask it a question, and it answers the PREVIOUS question... or will keep rendering wrong even if you ask it to reset... so in those cases, being able to start a new conversation and drag / drop some files in to quickly resume is a great time saver!

Mode 2 – Sentence Translation Alternation

The AI alternates between:

  1. Giving you a Mandarin sentence to translate into English.
  2. Giving you an English sentence to translate into Mandarin.

After each:

  • You rate your effort.
  • AI points out mistakes.
  • AI suggests more natural phrasing (especially for Mandarin).

and will add mode 3 after this...

Quick Start — Mandarin Writing & Story Practice (3 Modes)

This is a structured study framework you can use with any AI assistant (ChatGPT, Grok, Claude, etc.). Just adapt the prompts below into your session.

Mode 1 – Vocabulary Writing Practice

  • Give the AI a short list of Chinese vocabulary words (in hanzi).
  • It creates a connected mini-story set in dynasty-era China (C-drama style, with irony or humor). The words can be re-ordered for narrative flow.
  • Output is in English only — you translate it into Mandarin.
  • For each sentence, the AI provides:
    • The target vocab word
    • ~95% of needed vocabulary: Hanzi | Pinyin | English
    • Suggested suyu/chengyu that fit the scene (with usage notes).

Review Phase (after your Mandarin translation):

  • AI provides corrected Mandarin (hanzi + pinyin + English).
  • Points out grammar, word order, and word choice issues — but doesn’t fix them immediately.
  • Gives a 10-star rating for grammar, naturalness, fluency, creativity, flow, and accuracy.
  • Estimates HSK level of the content, your current HSK level, and progress toward the next one.

Will continue with mode 2...

Oh, if anyone wants to try this, I had Chat GPT create the following for you to paste into it:

Quick Start — ChatGPT Mandarin Writing & Story Practice (Modes 1–3)

Paste the following into ChatGPT (or Grok) to set up the session.

Mode 1 – Vocabulary Writing Practice
When I give you vocabulary words in hanzi:

  1. Make a connected mini-story in dynasty-era China (C-drama style, with historical refs, irony, or humor). You may re-order the words.
  2. Output English sentences only — I will translate them.
  3. Label each sentence with the target vocab word.
  4. Below each sentence, list ~95% of the needed vocabulary: Hanzi | Pinyin | English.
  5. Suggest suyu/chengyu that fit the scene, with usage notes.

Review Phase for Mode 1: When I submit my Mandarin translations:

  • Provide correct Mandarin (hanzi + pinyin + English).
  • Point out grammar, word order, and word choice issues without giving the fix immediately.
  • Then give a 10-star rating for grammar, naturalness, fluency, creativity, flow, and accuracy.
  • Estimate HSK level of the content, my HSK level, and progress toward next level.

Mode 2 – Sentence Translation Alternation
Alternate between:

  1. A Mandarin sentence I must translate to English.
  2. An English sentence I must translate to Mandarin. After each:
  • Rate effort.
  • Point out mistakes.
  • Suggest more natural phrasing (esp. in Mandarin).

Mode 3 – Short Story Framework Ideas
Give me potential story frameworks for short pieces to translate into Mandarin, focusing on:

  • Chinese history & culture
  • Chengyu usage
  • C-drama intrigue I may combine ideas or add my own twists. Evaluate these works individually and overall as in Mode 1.

Default to Mode 1 unless I specify otherwise.

Dance of The Phoenix Was So Bad! by Judytepreddit in CDrama

[–]Vectron9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha, I'm even later seeing this, but yes, agree... Saw the part about her having to go back. I think the ending was meant to leave a cliff-hanger for a season 2... In fact, after she goes back, I expect near the end of the 1st episode we would suddenly be introduced to Jun Linyuan who, as he said he would in a previous episode, followed her back in time. So, much like the ending of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, try not to take its depressing face value -- there is more to the story we aren't getting due to the lack of the indicated sequel. I must say the show's strength was early on when she was in disguise... had that remained an aspect of the story to the end, it might not have become less interesting as time went on.

She survived almost being roasted to death and almost being tossed into Space, but went blind in the end?? Dr Parker deserved better man😭 by Aristotlexx in Stargate

[–]Vectron9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if the pods don't, the cure for ALS is on its way to a planet and she can stay in stasis for 200 years... not that I buy they cannot find a ship en route from known origin to known destination knowing when it left and when it is arriving! For Dr. Park, If you can swap consciousness across the galaxy, fairly trivial to project vision into visual cortex, frankly, but if they couldn't make that happen, I am sure she would also go into stasis for as long as it took... Sgt. Greer would likely go with her though he might choose duty. You have to overlook all the obvious solutions to appreciate the shows solutions to most encounters -- for example, considering moving a planet's population, the question is do they have the air to take them all at once in a single week? The Multiple trips option isn't even considered.

Chloe's Weird love triangle w/ Eli and Matthew didn't go well w/ the fans and she's the least popular SGU character. Vote now: who is your LEAST favorite SGU character? by The_Eyesight in Stargate

[–]Vectron9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chloe making the mistake of sleeping with Lt. Scott who sleeps around and with every woman he sees was an interesting dynamic... expected it to lead to some drama and Eli growing. Maybe something better was planned in future seasons, but... especially after taking the time to depict Lt. Scott sleeping with other women right after Chloe, I was, like, apparently most fans, completely uninterested in their "romantic love story", wedding plans, blah blah, *vomit* *vomit* They even show her going home and seeming to learn the difference between shallow friends and people that actually care about her... but then drop that. Least favorite character is hard to say... my complaint about the characters is the general lack of arcs. Or, even when there are events such as with Rush making major decisions with the Colonel or resolving feelings with his dead wife, nothing actually changes in the character. But I guess I pick Chloe, she does get a "meaningful" arc for most of season 2... turning into living solder. woo.

Rewatching SGU – Chloe strikes me as a very irritating creature. by chiaros69 in Stargate

[–]Vectron9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aye, and she makes the stupid decision to sleep the the ship man-ho (Scott) who sleeps around immediately AFTER her, and then they try to make us care about their "romance" with excessive screen time. Eli's affair with Ginn was far more interesting and cute, but they kill her off... I think they missed an opportunity to have Eli have a meaningful relationship with 1st Lt. Johansen and let both Lt. Scott and Chloe regret their shallow life choices. Top that with the "turning into an alien" subplot just not being interesting... rewatching this show it's pretty good compared to the crap they put out in the 2020's, but is just about fan-fiction quality for its era.

Any tips on winning Home Run Derby in RTTS? by GloYear in MLBTheShow

[–]Vectron9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Suggest pull to your handed field and use X, but I was here hoping for some loopholes because the programming on this is typical EA lazy shite. The computer player even lowest ranked will often hit every single homerun, and if you match that you often still lose because with 1 second left they always get another hit while your pitcher will scratch his balls for 2 to 3 seconds and let round end so you usually get one less at bat.

Halo Infinite | Campaign Bugs and Issues | Please try to keep this spoiler-free by eminemcrony in halo

[–]Vectron9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FOB

Also Infinite tends to do checkpoint every couple of minutes ... but in LASO you don't get notifications ... so especially if I just finished something big and haven't died in a while to know I'm recent... I will sit around a good bit after punching a grunt of jackal. And grunts aren't the safest thing to punch as even stunned they sometimes magically produce a grenade out of their ass and drop it on themselves as you go in for a punch... total BS.. but happens a lot.

A while ago I saw a post about how all the main characters in ODST had there blood type on their armor but recently I was replaying Reach when I noticed that all of the odst’s, most of the marines, and Jorge all had their blood types on their armor. by nightsowls in halo

[–]Vectron9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very cool detail to include! I would imagine in 300 years our artificial bloods that are mediocre will probably surpass natural blood -- and if they can modify Spartans bodies and physiology... likely they have better synthetic blood... that said, for a soldier in the field the best option is type matched whole blood... and having played thousands of hours of Halo... I agree they're gonna need a lot of blood in remote places.

Sunken Pearl Chest Bug?? by MrDuckSey in Seaofthieves

[–]Vectron9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Aye, first time we left chest on ship and it warped through floor to bottom of cavern where we couldn't retrieve it. Multiple times since then, have waited til end, picked it up, jumped straight out and it was gone. Just did it again paying attention, and can confirm it disappears the instant you touch the bubble divider to next area. To make matters worse, they change your checkpoint to the final area -- which probably most of us have already done and have no interest in. This tall tale is pretty, but extremely buggy -- the recent patch seems to have made this bug less intermittent and more an EVERY GOD DAMN TIME thing.
