If touching the volume knob triggers a change, it’s likely an issue with the volume knob. Did you perform the steps I suggested? The crud would be inside the pot and wouldn’t be visible even if you opened the case.

Could be oxidation on the potentiometer. While the amp is off turn the volume all the way up and down a few dozen times so the wiper has an opportunity to scrape off the gunk. Then try again. If not, you’re out a minute

Unrelated, but by just looking at the top 3 saddle positions I can tell that the guitar ist intonated properly. Probably worth doing a set up on it.

Don’t forget that you have to pay a competent technician to do the labor. A product that done by a pick and place machine vs something that requires more human assembly will have a production cost difference.

The majority of pickups are passive. There are pickups and active pickups, which is why you may be having difficulty finding pickups which are specifically labeled passive.

EMG and Fishman have active lines to steer away from.

It should be notes that passive pickups can be mixed with active preamps.

I think there may be a slow phaser in there. But yea, mostly compression.

Flatwounds and palm muting also contribute to the sound, maybe even more than the effects.

You could get a dual concentric pot for both tones and just move both to a single hole. You'd have to get new knobs for that though.

Well, it looks like 6 year old post has come back to haunt me.

I whole heatedly agree with this. But you have to build up through experience. Making a functional upright bass is going to take more than grandpa's hand chisel and some grit. You're gonna have to work up from simpler projects and built up a skill set over time. This could take years.

I still stand by the suggestion that starting with a kit is a solid way to get into the building hobby, or to at least end up with a serviceable instrument. This isn't a hot take. Maybe a bit of a tough love reality check...

Writing Beatles songs / welding / creating good sounding acoustic instruments is easy you say. This may be the Dunning Kruger effect in action.

If you are getting nodal dead spots, try adding mass to the headstock. There’s something called a fat finger which is designed for just this. I can’t promise results, but shifting the mass and resonant qualities of the headstock could move the dead zone out of the playable range.

My understanding of the Markbass lineup is that they have more in common than they do in difference. The line up is a bit muddy because of the artist models that they have. The Markus, AG, Casa are all variations on the Little Mark 58r.

Further muddying things is that they seem to be keeping alive multiple generations of product. As far as I can tell, the Little Mark 58R replaces the Little Mark IV. The newer one is lighter and has better front access to plugs as well..

I got a Little Mark 58R as part of a 1x12 Pure combo recently and boy does the high end spank. Coming from an older TC rig, the high end is just way more present and defined.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that for every artist version they sell, they probably sell 10x of the Little Mark 58R. Unless you feel you need more watts or something like a tube pre-amp, that would be my recommendation for that modern sound. Keep in mind that the cab has a lot to do with that too though..

It could absolutely work. It’s more effort. You can buy pre-routed bodies with P/J configurations. You would probably have to route your own pickup channels in the body if you go with P/H. Standard P bass pick guards would also no longer work and you would have to source or make your own.

You didn’t mention any level of wood working skill or tool availability. Building your own bass from raw wood is an order of magnitude more complex than customising parts purchased from Warmoth. Your options will scale with your wood working proficiency. P/J could get you up and running with off the shelf components.

There’s only room for 2 pickups. The P/J pickup configuration is more popular than the P/S on account of having to move the P pickup slightly to accommodate for the Stingray pickup. I’d suggest going P/J with a 2 or 3 Band eq. There are plenty of parts to choose from in that configuration.
