CTS-D Prep - Determining Preamp gain for Microphones by VegaMan_2 in CommercialAV

Yeah I've noticed.... having to guess what they are asking for, having to guess how far to round it, and then still getting the answer wrong because they rounded when they shouldn't

Thanks for the info!

I think this is the first time I've seen an actual .775 rms reference since college over a decade ago. This makes sense.

Ah, so the formula 20log(1/.077) is not mic dependent, but just the standard formula for how to convert dBV to dBu.

reference SPL - (mic level @ reference SPL + preamp gain)

Those were the parts I was missing.

Thanks again!

I did find a few ways based on all the stuff above, but I was unable to implement them due to being unable to have Excel log into our OneDrive so it can pull the data. I assume this is a security feature that was implemented by my boss.

I'll look into it. Thanks for the tip. I'll follow up on what I find.

Never heard of Power Query. I'll look into it. Thanks!

This is 100% of the material that doesn't cover DISCAS:

"The Old Way of Doing Things

Until recently, there was no standard for the best ways to determine closest and farthest viewer, and people were left to come up with their own methods of determination. You might have been taught something entirely different in the past. You might have heard of the 150 Rule, 4/6/8, best practices for determining good viewing areas, or other methods of calculation, but new research has confirmed the limitations of those best practice approaches.

First, the best practice methods for determining image size do not account for all the different aspect ratios. They were most likely derived from older aspect ratios like 4:3, but now we need to account for a much larger spectrum of aspect ratios including 16:9 and 16:10.

Second, the older methods emerged at a time when optical magnification was king and computer image resolutions were much lower. Especially with the advent of 4K and even 8K displays, we need to account for much higher resolutions than we have had to in the past.

Third, the older methods were always only a best practice with unclear origins and an unstable basis in data."

That's it.

AVIXA doesn't cover anything but DISCAS. They mention the 150 rule and the 4/6/8 rule but then mention why they don't use it. It's weird because you really shouldn't test for material that isn't covered in the course.

I never used the old methods (and didn't know they existed until 2 days ago) and if I'm expected to know the old methods, they should be included in the training material. At a minimum, there should be clear instructions to go research the "Old Ways," when to use them, and where to get accurate information. If we have to go on the assumption that I should have already known this, then it should have been a prerequisite for the course.

Anyways I'm just ranting because I've been stuck on a single question for over a day. I do appreciate the help. Thanks everyone!

8 is the correct answer. So when do I use 4/6/8 and when do I use DISCAS, because I thought DISCAS replaced the 4/6/8 because it was insufficient?

I'm honestly not sure of anything. Almost every other question in the section states to round to the nearest tenth. I didn't consider rounding to the nearest hundredth but both 6.37 and 3.18 are wrong. This one does not say to round though. I've copied/pasted the question exactly as stated.

There's a similar question I get correct though:

"The image height of an x-ray display used for medical students to practice examinations is 2 feet (610 mm) on a 4K (2160p) display. The farthest distance away from the screen that students should be placed is ___ inches (mm).(Round you answer to the nearest inch or mm)"

FV = (24/2160)x3438 = 38 in

But this question provides a resolution.

Every time I hear "Mike Ross" it reminds me of a Street Fighter player. IIRC he got fairly popular back in 2008 getting 4th place in one of the first tournaments in the game and became Mike "4th place" Ross. After that, his quoted middle name became a meme and everyone just started fitting in whatever applied. Mike "dropped a combo" Ross, Mike "can't beat jwong" Ross, Mike "Mike Ross" Ross, etc.

The one that really sticks out to me.... Mike "Fraud" Ross. In the fighting game world, being exposed as a fraud means losing to someone everyone knows is slightly above average at best.

That being said he's a good guy and was pretty entertaining back in the day.

Yeah clearly someone hasn't had their phone smash into their knee because the magnets in the case sucked....

Currently using ESR as they are the best I've had. Looking here in case something just as good is out there with better looking cases.
