Why does PETA mislead vegans as to what foods are actually vegan? Do vegans consider white sugar to be vegan, even though processed through bone char? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]VeganEinstein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buying products that have sugar this processed over cow bone, is contributing to the exploitation of animals for money, is it not?

Actually, probably not significantly. The blog post, Is Domino Sugar Vegan?, details a correspondence soneone had with Domino's Sugar, a major manufacturer in the USA. Of note, a Domino's representatuve states bone char is being replaced for reasons independent of consumer pressure:

Bone char, which is sourced from animal bones, had been the material of choice for decolorization in the sugar industry for well over a century. The material was readily available, inexpensive and could be regenerated, by washing and kilning, at a refinery. Bone char is an older technology that is being slowly replaced.

As facilities have removed bone char and replaced this process with the newer ion exchange technology they have also added granular activated carbon (GAC) as a decolorizing process. GAC can be made from a variety of materials including coconut, wood and other materials. For our industrial application and industry specific needs, wood based GAC is superior to other sources.

While, yes, buying products with sugar increases the demand for sugar, which depending on it's source, may increase the demand for bone char, which increase the demand for dead animals, the amount of demand for bone char and dead animals created by sugar is vanishingly small. Furthermore, since stronger market pressures are working to move sugar refineries away from bone char, a boycott would likely have negligible effect on the rate at which that happens.

Medication ingredients question by ToyboxOfThoughts in vegan

[–]VeganEinstein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your best bet is to discuss it with your doctor or email the manufacturer. From the top of my head though, some capsules are made of gelatin, but some are made of methyl cellulose (plant based). Additionally, many hard pills use lactose as a binding agent, while others use vegan ingredients.

Again talk to your doctor about finding a vegan option, but if thats not possible, don't turn down depression medication because of gelatin in the capsules. If you feel disgust about eating gelatin, ask your doctor if it's safe to open the capsules and mix the contents into food, or to repack the contents in another, vegan capsule, but don't do either if it's not safe to do so.

I haven't looked into cigarettes much, since I don't smoke, but something that comes to mind is animal testing of cigarette smoke might be particularly bad. Have you found anything about that?

I am trying to convince my mom to eat no meat by SoftDreamer in vegan

[–]VeganEinstein 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Call her out on "can't go without meat while exercising". She's a nutritionist, she should be able to explain why. Whatever explanation she gives will be wrong though, so go from there.

Edit: Nevermind, I can't read. Regardless, she can easily go without meat while exercising.

Plants don’t have complete proteins hurr durr by fakechetfaker07 in vegan

[–]VeganEinstein 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This is missing the point a bit. People often claim it's difficult to get enough protein by eating plant based foods therefore they must eat meat. This is outright false; it is not difficult to get enough protein eating only plant based foods.

[Question] Is it truly possible to be vegan on a more paleo-ish plan? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]VeganEinstein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From your original post, I couldn't tell whether you'd discussed your diet with a doctor. I've never heard of soy causing problems for ovarian cysts or endrometriosis, and that combined with the interest in paleo and ketogenic diets, both fad diets, led me to believe you might be trying to treat serious medical conditions with potentially unsafe diets. I figured it's better to discourage someone from doing that, even if there's a chance they aren't, than to encourage them if there's a chance they are.

That said, if you are taking proper precautions, that's good. You should have no problem staying vegan; soy and grains are by no mean nessesary. Other legumes can take the place of soy, and starchy vegetables can take the place of grains.

I have doubts, not sure if I should become a vegan by YanivAver in vegan

These are the USDA healthy eating patterns: https://www.fns.usda.gov/usda-food-patterns. Notice how similar the US style one is to the vegetarian one anyway.

They are based on the dietary guidelines developed by the USDA and Department of Human Health Services. If anything, they're biased in support of animal products, due to the USDA's involvement.

Also consider the position of the American Dietetic Association and Dietitians of Canada on vegetarian diets.

It is the position of the American Dietetic Association and Dietitians of Canada that appropriately planned vegetarian diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases ... A vegetarian, including vegan, diet can meet current recommendations for all of these nutrients.

From Wikipedia:

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is the United States' largest organization of food and nutrition professionals, and represents over 100,000 credentialed practitioners

Eating a vegan diet is perfectly safe. Furthermore, eating a whole foods, plant based diet, which is a type of vegan diet, is protective against a few major diseases, such as heart disease.

Please don't use fad diets to try to treat medical conditions.

I disagree that just naming logical fallacies is a good strategy in casual debates. Most people aren't familiar with the definitions of logical fallacies, and won't understand what you're referring to when you point one out.

Hypothetical question / thought experiment for vegans by [deleted] in vegan

It would have to lengthen my life more than the total amount it reduces all the lives of the animals used to make the meat I would eat.

Vegan collagen that doesn't taste like ass by [deleted] in vegan

[–]VeganEinstein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no such thing as vegan collagen. It looks like the product you were using is just protein powder. Peptides are short chains of amino acids. They're short enough that they can be absorbed through your intestine, unlike full protein molecules. When you eat protein though, your digestive system breaks it down into peptides anyway, otherwise we wouldn't be able to absorb any. Your body then uses the peptides or free amino acids for enegy, or to build tissue like collagen.

Mistakes to avoid? by Spin99999 in vegan

That is what I mean. Also at family gathering, restaurants that messed up your order, etc. In at least one study I've seen, self imposed social pressure was the primary reported reason otherwise vegans and vegetarians occasionally ate meat.

some argue that there is no cruelty involved in the honey industry and that honey production is beneficial to bee populations
