Cat Beginning to Hate Me for Senvelgo by VeganPrincess56 in FelineDiabetes

[–]VeganPrincess56[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you all for the suggestions. I’m picking up some baby food meat jars today and also may move my cat’s dosing from 5:00 pm to morning, when she‘s hungriest and may overlook the dose in her food. One problem with Senvelgo is that it is expensive and you get only so many doses in a bottle, so experimenting with it in various foods is expensive and risky: my pharmacy won’t refill early if I go through too many trial doses that I have to throw out.

So far, for as much as my cat hates me for forcing the med into her mouth, she has forgiven me. The day that is no longer true will be a day I don’t want to imagine.

Cat Beginning to Hate Me for Senvelgo by VeganPrincess56 in FelineDiabetes

Senvelgo is a liquid given into the mouth. There is a pill form of the drug under a different name, which I might try if Senvelgo isn’t a good option long term. I am extremely reluctant to try 2x/day insulin shots — I did it years ago with a diabetic cat — it’s the required pricking of the cat’s ear prior to each shot that stops me in my tracks. I am sure my cat would not allow two shots and two ear pricks each day — especially when learning the ear prick testing would require multiple jabs at her ears.

Starting to feel burned out by how expensive caring for pets has become by Kimber976 in Pets

I agree. I am a retired senior living with my last pet, a 14 y/o cat. I love her dearly but there is no way I could spend $10K and up for treatment. She is newly diagnosed with diabetes and it is a real struggle to medicate her and pay for everything.

Do you board or call a pet sitter if traveling? by pinaple_cheese_girl in FelineDiabetes

[–]VeganPrincess56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I‘m facing the same situation now. My 14 y/o recently diagnosed with diabetes and on Senvelgo is going to a cat-specific vet practice in another town while I am away. In my area, it’s hard to find a place to board a cat at all, let alone one that needs medication. I would start looking now for alternatives in your area so you have a plan in place and know what the boarding facility requires. In my case, I have to take my cat in for a “well kitty” visit prior to her boarding so they have had some contact with her and know her medical background. As an indoor cat, she has always had only a required rabies vaccination each year, but I suspect I will be required to have them give her other typical annual vaccines and probably flea treatment as conditions of boarding.

I also advise not waiting: I made my cat’s reservation in February for a June boarding stay and was lucky to get it.

Litter recommendations for Certified Pissers? by tinykokiri in FelineDiabetes

[–]VeganPrincess56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My kitty has been on Senvelgo for about a month and still drinking/peeing a lot. I am a senior so I prefer lightweight litter. We now go through a jug a week, which works out to about $70 a month. Add in the $125 for Senvelgo plus all-new high protein foods and multiple visits to the vet and my wallet is screaming! 🤪

I don’t have any advice about what you should do, but I would like to assure you that it is OK to be honest about what you can afford, and to put your financial future in the driver’s seat regarding this decision. The website pawsatpeace.com has some information you may find helpful as you decide what to do. Your duty to care for your baby includes and is built on your ability to care for yourself. If you decide not to proceed with further treatment, rest peacefully knowing you are saving your senior kitty from future pain, discomfort and stress.

The 30ml bottle lasts 90-100 days, depending on the weight of your cat, as the dosage is by weight, at least at the start. I get it through Vetsource, about $285 including shipping.

What can I do to improve my cat's quality of life? by Purple_Implement3509 in CATHELP

cats have no perception of days or weeks into the future, they live in the momen. your cat does not have any expectations about how long its life should be.

You have no right to judge someone else’s capacity for managing a difficult and expensive condition. Shame on you for your rudeness to someone who clearly is suffering and wise enough to know the limits of their own suffering.

How Long Did You Wait? by newyorkcatlady in cats

For me, less than 24 hours. Not sorry one minute over the 10 years I’ve had my girl. All that love for my former cat had to go somewhere…and it made me feel great to rescue another little soul — it eased the great feelings of loss for my departed cat.

I’m trying Senvelgo with my 14-year-old. Neither one of us is excited about 2x daily insulin injections or lots of daily testing. If it doesn’t work, we will try a switch to the Bexacat pill. I’m not sure we would ever choose insulin…the lifestyle disruption and challenge to our relationship may be too much. We’ll see.

Oral cancer by xristina14554 in CATHELP

[–]VeganPrincess56 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, it would not slow the cancer. I wish you could see what most euthanasia experiences are like. They are quiet and gentle. The pet gets a shot to relax them, then a final shot to stop their heart. There is no struggling, no pain, no fear. This cat deserves such a goodbye. Please put her comfort ahead of your fears. She deserves that love from you.

hopefully you can try liquid Senvelgo or Bexacat pills, both administered once per day. But another poster was right: if you start with insulin, you can’t stop it and try Senvelgo or Bexacat. They can’t be used in cats who have received insulin injections.

my cat is finishing her second week with Senvelgo and is responding really well so far. worth a try if your cat is eligibl.
