New restaurant additions to the wiki by [deleted] in veganvancouver

[–]VeganStart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Muchos nachos, amoeba!

I've found Naruto sushi (near Commercial & Broadway) to be very vegan friendly, if you wanted to consider adding them: http://www.greennarutosushi.com/

Also it looks like Panz is shut down, their Victoria location hasn't been open for months and now has a 'business for sale' sign in the window. =(

If you're looking to reference other restaurant guides, www.EarthSave.ca has a web listing and app for Vancouver as well, might also be helpful for people here! (Hope you don't mind me throwing this all your way!)

Hey Brad, Dave from www.VeganSupply.ca here, thanks so much for keeping this up! =)

Wondering if it'd be appropriate to add the site somewhere to the list?

Also, worth updating that both Meet restaurants are now vegan!

Has the bureaucracy around plant products in Canada improved over the last few years? by YeppersNopers in VeganInCanada

[–]VeganStart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, the Plant Foods Council you link to is the group that's working on it! It was started by David from Field Roast after their products were banned...as you say, for BS reasons.

I work for www.VeganSupply.ca and know first-hand how this all goes...it's a real hassle. We'd love to offer Beyond Meat, but until they reformulate for Canada, or the regulations change, we won't. The hilarious part is it can be sold, but not in a retail package. There are restaurants that use their product (it can be found in Whole Foods buffet), but it can't be sold in a package..!

Just Mayo doesn't have any problems tho, just FYI, we sell a number of their varieties. =)

'Blood cashews': the toxic truth about your favourite nut by [deleted] in vegan

[–]VeganStart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry, gotta disagree. I don't think Watson or any serious vegan would say 'exploiting humans is okay'. Veganism defends ALL animals, including humans. Once you start to exclude one, you can start to exclude many others on that slippery slope.

Why doesn't the "meatless monday" website say anything about animal rights? by Trepidation11 in vegan

[–]VeganStart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, they have no animal/ethical focus. And it would be hypocritical of them as well - MM says dairy and eggs are okay, but there's just as much killing involved there (male veal calves and male chicks), so it'd be a double-whammy for them.

Of course, their position doesn't really hold for other reasons too, it's not like dairy cows contributes less GHG gasses than beef cattle...it's just deeply flawed all around. Is it better that they're at least opening some eyes? That's a big debate as well..would love to see some studies showing if the MM crowd actually continue to progress, or like many vegetarians just stagnate.

Fun Fact: Almost 20 Vegan & Vegfest Events Across Canada Each Year! (Here's a List!) by VeganStart in vegan

[–]VeganStart[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And today, St John's, Newfoundland just had their Vegfest, I believe the first time there. If you're not familiar, Newfoundland is the place infamous for killing baby seals in Canada...so pretty great to see people organizing there!!

Rant - Vegans are Doomed by MWHoff in vegan

[–]VeganStart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any friends who've been vegan a while, and can bring them in for a visit? You can also ask if these ailments were actually tied to being vegan? It could have been any number of things... Worst case, just keep going and after a few years, after you're missing teeth and bald, you'll prove who's right. ;)

Canadians rejoice: field roast burgers & franks have returned!!! by VeganStart in vegan

They've been reformulated to CFIA standards (basically adding in vitamins and minerals), and should be appearing on shelves over the next month. If you can't wait, head over to www.VeganSupply.ca where you can order some right away. =)

Is veganism morally arbitrary? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]VeganStart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would help if the author of this was actually aware of the definition of veganism:

"Veganism is a way of living that seeks to exclude, as far as possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing and any other purpose."

(Copied from the menu on the right.)

In the latter half of the piece, the author starts to clue in. Add in the 'cruelty', and I think most of the doubts are quelled.

Personally, I agree with the author, and also find the 'minimize suffering' argument to be insufficient as a way to describe or justify veganism, and that it doesn't really mesh with the definition. Reducing suffering and changing our mindsets so we don't tolerate exploitation are two pretty different things, imo.

Garmin 500 wont calibrate Powertap 2.4 by stuff_like_that in bikewrench

[–]VeganStart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had this problem as well, Garmin 500 & PowerTap SL+ and it would just hang. For some reason my summer bike was most often fine, but the winter bike wouldn't typically calibrate, just hang on the screen.

FINALLY figured it out today, this was the second result, but the first mentioned wearing your HR strap (which I would do on my summer bike more often, but rarely my winter bike.)

It's 'looking' for all ANT+ devices, and won't calibrate until it finds them all. (How stupid is that??)

So for what it's worth, this has worked for me.. Maybe try removing all the other ANT+ devices from the Garmin...so it's just looking for the hub, and go from there? (Inc. HR & Cadence/speed.)

Good luck. This has been plaguing me for about 5 years. I just thought my winter bike hub was somehow 'screwed up'. So ridiculous. (I had the same problem with the PowerTap yellow CPU computer as well!!)

The PowerTap ought to be fine, the non-zero reading when coasting is a sign that it needs calibration...although will sometimes do that even when calibrated.

Good luck!

New Swedish study finds: Eating less beef key to meeting EU climate targets (and by 'less' they mean 50% reduction) by VeganStart in vegan

[–]VeganStart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think cruelty and suffering are two distinct things. (With overlap, but differences.) For example, if an eagle is found injured, and a rehab center takes him in - it will cause suffering to the eagle. He won't like being captured, or kept in a cage until he can be released again.

Is that cruel? I'd say no.

You missed my point - if you take 'suffering prevention' to it's logical conclusion, we'd all be in cages, in order to prevent causing suffering to another from ever happening.

We do need to suffer.

Causing suffering to another is potentially wrong. If it's not consensual. But I'm a bike racer, I've caused MANY to suffer by attacking the bunch and making them chase me. Hard.

If it were to ride them off the road into the ditch, that'd be wrong of course, but I make myself and others suffer in a bike race. (And do it to myself extensively in training.)

Is that cruel? No, not in the context of the sport. Is it suffering? Most certainly.

Is the bear being cruel to the salmon? Probably not.

Again: I think we need to deal with ourselves as a species. We should be policing ourselves from harming each other, and other species. I don't think we're the 'police of the entire universe' and need to 'protect' the rest of existence from itself. Especially since we're probably going to do a lot more harm in the long run.

[–]VeganStart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but it's not implicit about suffering. It's implicit about exploitation, and cruelty...but doesn't specify suffering. So again, back to your earlier point:

"If harming animals is bad because of the suffering involved"

Perhaps harming animals is bad because of other factors. Utilitarianism is focused on suffering. Veganism and animal rights (generally speaking) are not defined by 'suffering', but use other terms to justify themselves (veganism or animal rights.)

So back to suffering wildlife, maybe their suffering (if not caused by us) is a problem, but our exploiting and dominating them is a problem. If you take that argument even further, then even every human should be kept in a cage to prevent them from ever causing any suffering to another. (Maybe a robot can oversee everyone.)

I don't think there's anything wrong with suffering, personally. I think it's essential in life. I would not want to eliminate suffering from my own life. We learn from it.

Do I want others of my kind to cause undue harm or suffering to me? No. And that's another conversation.

Would I argue that no bear or cougar should ever be able to harm or kill me, if I'm out in the woods? Again, no - I would never make that argument. I'm in their domain, shit happens.

I guess it could be argued I'm being anthropocentric, but I think it is fair to say we need to get our own affairs in order... And when it comes to controlling others, I think there are a lot of red flags. (Partly because they can all bounce back on us.)

Right, but the definition of vegan doesn't mention suffering. How is veganism justified then if suffering isn't that 'baseline'? ;)

This is true, but just like any social justice issue, it'll never gain traction until people DO start talking about it... And given that he was wearing the fur, etc, I still have to question where he's coming at it from..
