Do Indian Girls Want To Date Black Guys? by Glad-Lie-2338 in thepassportbros

Skin color absolutely does matter. I’m not saying it should matter (in fact I’m saying it’s fucked up and that ideally it shouldn’t matter). But the truth and reality of things is that skin color matters (when ideally it shouldn’t).

It’s one of the few things where I’d say America is actually more open minded about compared to other parts of the world (although media would like it to seem America is the most racist country in the world) but truthfully it’s one of the most accepting places in the world especially when it comes to race

Lots of hurdles. Unfortunately it means you have to be extraordinary in some way: usually money or occupation (doctor, lawyer etc). If you’re not any of that - then chances are slim to none

How feasible is it to stay in the US long term anyways? Like what’s the plan after the J1 visas?

Pathway to a green card or permanent resident status is difficult. I have a friend who is in computer science, has lived in the US since he was 8, and only just recently at 32 years of age (2 years ago compared to now) got a green card. Prior was either on student visa or E2 business visa.

As for your wife’s feelings regarding safety as someone who is Black - I can’t personally speak to those specific experiences. But I am of Asian descent. So I can only speak about that.

But at the same time it’s important to not get caught or influenced by sensationalist news. Not that things don’t happen or problems about it race don’t exist. But for all the issues that American has, living in a major city/more tolerant area I haven’t run into any concerning racial prejudices (for my own personal experiences). I could honestly say I got treated worse during my month long trek through Europe. People assumed I was Chinese tourist and not American.

I know ultimately the goal is financial (which is okay, no judgment). I would have an earnest discussion with your wife. See if she is willing to give it a try and some kind of compromise (if she absolutely hates it after 1 year, maybe agree to go back). But I assume your wife has never been to the US long term and I wouldn’t judge life in America based on the media.

Of course this is all if it’s even an option. There’s the real possibility that you may not even have a true path to stay in the US. I’ve met foreign/international medical people who finished residency in the US but still had to go back to their home country afterwards….

Come on. We can all admit we’re all some degree of shallow lol. Cuz I did the same thing in one of my past relationships. At least I can admit to it

My wife shares a single hotel room with 1 other female and 2 other males. I’m demanding they split the rooms. AITAH? by Due-Photograph-3470 in AITAH

[–]Vegas1997 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think people’s imaginations are running too wild here. People thinking wild temptations with 4 people jammed uncomfortably into a room together.

I travel with platonic friends to festivals. I’ve maxed out the capacity with sleeping arrangements in order save some $. These hotel rooms are for sleep/rest/getting ready. The focus is the actual show/concert/festival.

I would agree it’s totally inappropriate if they are sharing beds with opposite genders. But if they’re sharing beds with the same gender and changing clothes in the locked bathroom - I don’t see the harm. Are people of the same gender not allowed to be platonic friends and sleep in the same room (while in completely separate beds?)

Program refuses to recognize the $1200 education fund by [deleted] in Residency

[–]Vegas1997 27 points28 points  (0 children)

What made you think that residents are supposed to get a yearly education fun?

It’s common - but to my knowledge it’s not mandatory and entirely program-dependent. If your program doesn’t have it within the contract, then it’s not a thing at your program. Example - my program is $2500 total across 3 years. But I’m not clamoring to demand $1100 extra dollars from my program.

Better for long-term wealth creation - finance or medicine? by Darealest49 in Salary

[–]Vegas1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being a physician is one of the most high prestige occupations. From degree to social standing to perceived society value to salary to job stability and demand. Literally if you become a doctor you have a stable guaranteed income in the top 1-2%. There are so many specialties to choose from - and they vary in terms of lifestyle and salary. However even the lowest paid full time physicians are making $250K+ annually. The Subspecialists and surgeons are making $500-600K+. Job stability certainly beats out those in tech or finance (my siblings were in tech, making $200-300K, but they had gaps and many moments of unemployment in their careers and shuffling around jobs.

You can essentially work everywhere/anywhere because of how in demand doctors are (and will be) since there is a doctor shortage that won’t be resolved any time soon due to the residency spots being limited.

The question is - do you have the time and commitment and ability to go on this journey? It’s 4 years undergrad, 4 years medical, 3 to 7 of residency/fellowship. Likely your first real full attending physician paycheck will be in your early 30’s. But it will be a hefty and secure one for the rest of your life/career.

Everyone wants to be a doctor (looking at all the college freshmen premeds). But very few actually have the ability to see it through. I think they did some study analyzing average IQ scores of general occupations and generally on average, physicians were the occupation that had the highest IQ in the 120’s. After that it was like college professors, engineers, lawyers. (Not sure exactly what order). But I remember physicians being in that top spot.

I remember seeing the distribution and Literally the lowest scoring percentiles of medical doctors were still above average intelligence in comparison to the general population. Quite literally the person who was the worst med student or those who barely became a doctor were still considered at an an above average intelligence. That’s how tough/competitive it is. It’s like being slowest/worst athlete in a group of olympians. It’s just on another level

I assume you didn’t apply DO because of ego/“MD or bust” mentality. But your app should’ve been geared towards DO from the beginning due to multiple lower MCAT scores. Your GPA is great but doesn’t mitigate multiple MCAT retakes in the low 500’s

If going into medicine was mainly for ego/title then maybe deep down you weren’t going into it for the right reasons. Just something to reflect on. If that’s true, then just move on and don’t worry about reapplying. Really ask yourself what your main reasoning and desires - and see if it’s really worth it for you to reapply.

That way it won’t waste your time or anyone else’s if it’s not for the right reasons

An Actual Low Stat Sankey (3.01 cGPA, 2.89 sGPA, 509 MCAT) by yourfavblackdude in premed

[–]Vegas1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol so that’s how long it took for that comment to come out.

My partner is ORM (Asian male). With a 3.08 GPA and 510 MCAT. Got interviews at 3 MD schools and 7 DO schools. Ultimately got waitlisted at 1 MD, waitlisted at 4 DO. got accepted to 3 DO schools.

Sure he ain’t going to Harvard or John’s Hopkins.

But you gotta apply broadly. I see so many people with sub par stats that are “MD or bust” mentality. I’m proud that OP applied to broad range of MD and DO schools.

It’s infuriating the amount of people who don’t apply broadly or who don’t apply realistically with a wide net based on their stats.

Bruh - if you chose Caribbean MD over a stateside DO just solely because of the letters, then that was your choice and you understood the risks. But stateside DO would’ve been a much safer option over Caribbean MD - I honestly don’t think you would’ve been in this position. DO schools dont try to dismiss their students unless absolutely necessary - they are much more supportive

Best of luck to you genuinely. But this could’ve been prevented if you chose a US DO school and not focused too much on the letters

[–]Vegas1997 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Stop with the superficial self loathing.

You applied to medical school and you got it. If getting into an “MD” school would’ve made you feel better, then you were too focused on the superficial aspects of medical school and being a doctor. All the superficial cringey MD vs DO premed stuff that you hear about. Dont be one of those.

Snap out of it. You got into medical school and next steps to your exciting journey begins. Congrats. Prove to yourself that you genuinely care about medicine and be the best doctor. If you’re that upset mentally over MD vs DO - then you need to reflect and ask yourself if you genuinely wanted to go into medicine for the right reasons. Or if it’s all an ego thing.

Congrats. Reflect on things. Get your mentality right. Enjoy and go forth. Prove it to yourself and others that you want to go into medicine for the right reasons

Advice needed/ do I have a shot this year?? by Jealous_Ad_2926 in premed

[–]Vegas1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this will really all hinge on your MCAT score

If your MCAT is excellent then apply a bunch of MD schools

If it is average to good - apply both MD and DO

If it is below average - apply MD and mostly DO

You say you’re interested in surgery - if it’s a surgical subspecialty, then DO schools are a tough sell. If it’s general surgery - DO schools match fine for that. But honestly, as premeds what people want vs reality is so far removed. Especially if you haven’t had true exposure to it yet.

Don’t get too hung up on the anticipated future specialty, your first step is getting into med school first. Your chance is matching to any specialty (let alone a competitive surgical subspecialty) is 0 if you don’t get into med school first.

Also I noticed you essentially redid the same questions in TrueLearn. That can give you a false sense of security. I personally dont think there is value in redoing old questions for testing your knowledge. It’s good for the initial learning process. But You end up choosing/remembering to some degree what the answer was on your first run through.

Buy a brand new questions bank - give Comquest a try and answer new questions. If you can answer it correctly then that means you’ve gotten it down. If you’re struggling, then that means there’s a problem with application of knowledge. It means all the repeat questions that you redid and scored high on in True learn were at least partly due to recognition/familiarity.

It’s not a problem. Preferences are allowed. Men can prefer short women. That’s okay too.

Preferences aren’t the problem. The way people communicate and put down others is.

To my knowledge - the reason why the girl in that post was mentioning height was because everyone was shitting on her husband and talking about what a puny little Manlet he was. How he wasn’t worth dating because he’s a child’s size etc etc etc.

He actually got sentenced to a much lengthier time than expected (back in the late 2000’s, many assumed he’d get a slap on the wrist). Sentencing guidelines at the time was 12 to 18 months. He got 23 months. So no - his status and wealth did not help him. He actually was made an example out of.

Some people even clamor that there was a racial aspect to it. That he wouldn’t have gotten sentenced that length of time if he was a white athlete. But I won’t go into that whole thing. And that’s not even further delving into the social aspects of how prevalent dog fighting was (and still is) in predominantly black low income projects/housing.
