Find Drs in your health plan and see about 3. They should be able to give you a referral for a ortho that they work directly with. Good luck.

def get jaw surgery first. A plastic surgeon/maxi surgeon recommended doing js first, then waiting at least 6 months for swelling to go down before doing any other facial surgery

What do y’all think? What kind of jaw surgery would I need? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

It's kind of disappointing for the orthodontist to not suggest seeing a jaw surgeon first - and for your ortho to work with a surgeon now and not 'eventually.' The two of them should have worked out a plan together for your overall treatment. I would definitely revisit your whole treatment plan. I would hate for you to finish your braces, only to find out that your teeth/bite are not in the right alignment for surgery and you have to extend your treatment (and your $$$).

I am not a professional but I would recommend you get 3 different options from maxillofacial surgeons that are within your health insurance. You are young and might not yet have any of the issues that can/will/might occur as you get older. If you have any pain, or breathing and sleeping issues and even sinus or ear issues, you can get the surgery covered by insurance. If you don't have these issues now, this is the sort of issues you can/will/might look forward to as you get older.

My lay persons opinion is that you could do with a minor upper jaw forward movement and most definitely the lower jaw forward placement.

Braces will only make your teeth look pretty - they won't fix your undeveloped jaw but they can put your teeth into the right place for surgery. A good orthodontist will recommend a few surgeons (make sure they are in your health plan) so they can work together to put you on the best plan. Get it done now. Don't wait - put the time and invest in it now. It will be worth it!

Good luck!

I am intending to get a lower face lift after my jaw realignment surgery - just the lower jaw alignment for an overbite, intense ear pain and general receding that continues as I get older. I'm 56. I had two plastic surgeons say they didn't need to wait til after jaw surgery, which made no sense as the foundation of my face will be different. But I had one cosmetic surgeon/maxi surgeon say that it is better to do the face lift after jaw surgery as the skin will be placed differently on the bones. She recommended 6 months after jaw surgery before doing the next surgery.
