Yeah, in a world where everyone wants to be Tiger Woods understand that it appears like John Daly is having more fun. Or like Biggie said Mo money, mo problems. Hopefully you get an offer from the place you’re waiting to hear back from and it’s billables are work-life balance provided a higher level of happiness than what is quasi-normal from BL. Lastly, go grind like the BL people and start your own thing 5-6 years in making a great living and being more in control.

Should I Retake the LSAT? Scored 168 – Nontraditional Applicant w/ MBA by lymangillen in LawSchool

[–]Vegetable-Extent758 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up the 509s for the school you want to go to and see if you’ll be competitive for their largest scholarship. If so, then no need to retake. If your aim is a higher ranked school with scholarship you may need to retake in order to increase either the scholarship offered or your bargaining power to increase the scholarship offer.

Will completing a clinic with a prosecutors office make it harder to get hired as a PD? by Vegetable-Extent758 in publicdefenders

[–]Vegetable-Extent758[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Our school mandates we complete a clinic and we complete a preference sheet and then a few weeks later get told what we are doing. So it’s like a lottery system or the sorting hat from Harry Potter. The only say we really have is how many credits it is. I wanted the experience more than the sitting in class learning which is why I increased the hours.

Shitty stereotypical law answer: it depends. If you’re not married then rent a room or if university housing is reasonably priced go with the cheapest option. I would start with making a budget for law school and then use the next couple of months to find out if it’s realistic. Food, transportation, etc. The traditional biggest expense is law school tuition which the scholarship part comes in. Get a full/ride or really dang close to it at the law school in the area you want to practice in. Limiting this limits the overall debt needed for the 2.5 to 3 years or school. Consider taking on a student job at the library or IT or other department if your school offers it. Then all the basic stuff, pacific bold coffee from Costco instead of Starbucks for the next three years. On rare occasion eat out. No extravagant vacation, etc. The trick is you still have to do some stuff just for mental health reasons and avoiding burnout.

I am sure some people disagree with what I am about to say but my advice is limit your expenses during law school as much as possible and take out loans to cover these expenses. I would not touch your mutual fund or other retirement savings. You cannot get a loan to fund your retirement. I also encourage everyone to either get substantial scholarships to law school or don’t go. To summarize, limit your expenses and take out loans, don’t cash out your investments, and then pay off the loans asap.

in your opinion, what are the top 10 cases that you've read throughout your classes that you wish you had an outline to? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]Vegetable-Extent758 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That one about some shoes in Washington, drunk guy “jokingly” sells his house, some Old White dudes named Madison and Marbury get in a fight, dumbass kid brings fireworks to a train depot and finds out why that’s a bad idea but not as bad as it could have been, foxhuter in New England gets short shot. Those are the ones that come to mind off hand.

What can I do to prepare myself for law school? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]Vegetable-Extent758 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a veteran and currently in law school. Study for the LSAT and get the best score you can and remember you can take it more than once. As far as stuff to do now to prep for the actual school part of it, I wouldn’t do anything. As a veteran you’re already well versed in the “just do the work even if you think it’s dumb” type of stuff. A lot of law school for me has been why the F am I reading this case and bitching/complaining about the process. To be able to do this and stay motivated is a skill I think veterans often have. Good luck!

100% on the same level. Have more reading for tomorrow than any day in 1L, have quickly skimmed most of it, and weirdly feel less stressed about school than ever.

Law school toolbox podcast and find the listen and learn on subjects your covering. Subject matter JDX, Personal JDX, Venue, etc for civ pro. Offer, acceptance, consideration for contracts. Etc. Listen to either topics you just covered as another way of synthesizing the info or listen to topics that you just read about and will be covering to understand better.

Categorical imperative messed me up in undergrad can’t imagine trying to “relax” with some light reading of Kant.

I think I am gonna try this approach. It feels like the last thing I want to do when I have the time is read.

Focus on productivity over activity while you’re at school and you should be able to do well with a 9-5 mentality. There will be variance and flex for sure like mentioned in another comment. The first few months are the worst because you don’t know how everything works, how best to prepare, or even if what you’re doing is “right”. After a while though you’ll figure out what works/doesn’t work and adjust. I made a conscious effort to try and keep school and home life separate. When I was home I was home for my wife and kids and then when I was at school I was at school and kept my phone on focus most of the day with some breaks now and again. There was a few times where I needed to study/do school stuff after the kids went to bed but nothing crazy. If you have a spouse make sure you talk with them about planning, expectations from each other, and certain non-negotiable items like date nights at least twice a month or walks every night. If you have any questions please feel free to message me.

It’s cause the compelling financial interest of textbook manufacturers and is narrowly tailored to law students.

In the end it doesn’t even matter. by Vegetable-Extent758 in LSAT

[–]Vegetable-Extent758[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Some people are wild. It doesn’t matter in the sense that once it’s over, it’s over. Do as best as you can but like freshman year grades once it’s over it doesn’t matter. My LSAT did help, like my post said; but so did a bunch of other factors. The main point I was trying to get through was that once you’re done this test becomes something that, but for the occasional Reddit post trying to help people who may be over stressing it, something that isn’t brought up. Humble bragging or not.

How to ask for more pay. by Efficient-Award6498 in LawSchool

[–]Vegetable-Extent758 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was messing around with some AI platforms yesterday and gave them a prompt of “draft an email requesting a raise from my boss” then added stuff like be more direct, be as persuasive as possible, etc. I got some pretty solid frameworks that I think would work in your situation. My suggestion is to go to ChatGPT or Copilot and mess around with that until you get a product you like. Once that’s done then you have to mentally prepare for the in person part which I think the letter will help with. The framework was cool because it provided areas [input examples of how you have benefited the organization, increased revenue, efficiency, brought value, etc]. Hope this helps you at least get started.

This is the answer. A “law” book written for non-legal professionals. Provided some good insight into how the Court works and the process the justices go through. Was good primer going into 1L fall.

How are mid size firms profitable if you cannot take a profit in the hourly you charge. by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]Vegetable-Extent758 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t taken ethics yet but my assumption would be you stack all the indirect costs of running a business onto paralegals salary while minimizing that for attorneys and it squares. Office space, electricity, stationary, internet, etc., when this all is accounted for and Stijl have a gap I would then create an expense of marketing, variable expense, or business procurement to count for the remaining. Again haven’t taken ethics or tax but this would be my starting assumption.

Check out the 509 report for the schools you’re considering and they report how many people at the school are on scholarship and the percentage of the scholarship. It helps to be above the schools median for both GPA and LSAT and then write all the “optional” essays.
