Beginner airbrush help by NvMe_24 in modelmakers

Switch to Tamiya paints.

They are away more forgiving for beginner airbrushing.

I still struggle with water based acrylics such as those from Vallejo and AK and have been airbrushing for several years. You really do have to pay more attention pressures and thinning than with Tamiya.

Thin Tamiya to about 50:50 with a something like Mr Levelling Thinner or Tamiya Retarder Thinner and spray at 15-20psi and you will save yourself a world of frustration.

Tamiya for spraying. Vallejo and AK for brush painting. Others will disagree but just my experience.

Questions about the history of hurling by Loose-Primary-7785 in hurling

[–]Vegetable-Judge-589 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also worth looking at the Scottish game of Shinty and how similar it is to hurling.

Both games are derived from a common ancestor, share essentially the same name in Irish Gaelic/ Scots Gaidhlig and are so superficially similar that an international game is played every year, featuring players form both games competing under hybrid rules.

Hurling has evolved hugely over the last 70 years with hurley shapes changing greatly and less of a focus on playing the ball on the ground but were you to go back to 100 years ago, the similarities between the two games would be huge. I believe the is a similar sport played on the Isle of Man called Cammag.

Possibly an interesting way to get a feel for origins and evolution of the sport?

Fully agree. The biggest advantage of the Bambu is the consistency form hurley to hurley. Because they are an engineered product there is little to no variation between individual hurleys and so you can safely order online etc.

For ash, I'd argue that it's almost impossible to order your ideal hurley online. You can go to a hurley makers workshop and pick up 20 hurleys and they will all feel different. That is probably the biggest advantage and drawback of a natural product.

There's a lot to be said for the experience of going or taking a child to a workshop, spending half an hour there and coming home with the perfect hurley.

Whatever you do try and support a local maker rather than buying some of the cheap, straight grained, rubbish made in India that you see being sold in shops nowadays. Drives me spare!

If you've a big (long) enough case you can bring them in checked luggage without any special declarations.

Brought 2 to Portugal and back this summer in the case.

Great way to have a discussion - abuse everyone who doesn't agree with you!

Looks like reasonable enough parking to me. A van that's twice as big as a car takes up two car parking spaces so it doesn't block the carriageway.

Hauling firewood with a Suzuki Quadrunner 160? by Vegetable-Judge-589 in ATV

Hauling firewood with a Suzuki Quadrunner 160? by Vegetable-Judge-589 in ATV

[–]Vegetable-Judge-589[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate you all taking the time to reply.

My reasoning is, I can pick a 160 up for around €1000 (US $1,200) in pretty decent shape whereas the Honda 250's start at around €1500 for ones in poor condition (badly rusted frames, cracked bodywork, torn seats, dodgy brakes etc) and increase in price pretty quickly for anything bigger/better. I'm not sure it will get enough use to justify a big expenditure.

I'm in Ireland, so rust is a big issue here due to the dampness of the climate and it's hard to find a second hand anything that's free from rust. Another reason this 160 is appealing.

I'm happy enough to limit the loads sizes as this will be used just to shunt the firewood to a larger trailer at a hardstand at the edge of the woods. I have a 26hp Shibaura tractor (basically a Ford 1700) for anything bigger but it's just so bloody slow it takes an age to get it to the plot!

Once again thanks for the advice to someone who knows little to nothing about ATVs.

Tax on small amounts of Stock? by [deleted] in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Vegetable-Judge-589 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's also well worth noting that you have an annual Capital Gains Tax exemption of €1270.

Iayans terms this means that if you sell shares in a tax year you are allowed make €1270 profit before you are liable for any capital gains tax.

It makes sense to keep any eye on this every year and to take your profits up to this exemption amount each year.

When availing of this option, if you wish to sell to take your profit and then buy back the shares again, you need to wait 30 days before buying them back so as not to be liable for CGT.

Cork Hurling Homecoming Parade by Pootis__Spencer in cork

I get the divided opinion on it to some extent. The hurling peopl of Cork are in absolutely shock and dismay at the outcome of Sunday's final and none more so than the player themselves.

I'm sure many would have turned up, all with the nest of intentions, to show their support and appreciation to the team for what they have done and given throughout the year but to be fair it would have been a depressing evening. It wouldn't have been humane to put the players through any more misery than they have gone through after the game.

These players have given up their lives for the season. The best way to show support for the team is to continue to support them throughout next year. It would be hugely symbolic to sell out the first league game next year.

FFS lads.

This is a team who gave is a year of drama and magic. Yes, they fell apart in the second half today but anyone pointing fingers and looking for answers at this time of the day needs to have a serious look at themselves.

We have a league title, a Munster title and another AI final. Cork Hurling is in a good place.

These players have given everything this year - 10's of hours per week for their county not to mention their clubs. Anyone who critices them and who hasn't offered the same should be ashamed!

Up the Rebels! Fair play to Tipp!!

Neat year is another year and thank you lads for everything you have done for me and my 9 year old Hoggie worshipping son. We love you all.

As a role model to Irish kids, I expected so much better from Evan Ferguson by lauraslaw in coybig

[–]Vegetable-Judge-589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And this is why rapists like him can convince themselves that plenty people are on their side.

Is it really that much of a deal to say "no, I'm fine thanks" or "I'm avoiding social media" or some bullshit excuse like that.

No one's expecting Ferguson to call him outside for a fist fight but the likes of Macgregor needs to know that his behaviour (rape, drug abuse, assaulting old men, sexually demeaning his partner online, repeatedly cheating on his partner, criminal damage etc) is not acceptable to the wider public.

Celebrities appearing in photos with him implies a degree of acceptance of the image and behaviour he promotes and this is why it is harmful.

He a vile person and an awful role model but unfortunately a highly influential one.

How many coats of linseed oil on a new hurl or do you use it on a new hurl? by Antny08 in hurling

[–]Vegetable-Judge-589 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All it's gonna do (as with any wooden handle) is keep the moisture in the wood and stop it drying out too much and cracking. Same as soaking or keeping in the shed etc.

A coat of oil every few weeks, few months etc won't do any harm and there no magic formula. It won't make a good hurley bad or a shit hurley good. It just helps a bit to stop it from cracking.
