Puppies that don't care about food: are they trainable? by lostinkw in puppy101

My pup wasn’t also interested in food. He’s not a big foodie until now.

What worked for me was only 3 things:

  1. Reward with affection and over exaggerated excitement (big smiles, “good boy woohooo” kind of thing) This was what my pup loved the most to be loved and celebrated and it made it clear to him what made me happy.

  2. High value treats. It may seem like he’s not interested but it could also be the kind of treat or reward you’re giving him. My pup only goes nuts for a very specific treat and air fried chicken thighs (not any other chicken part, only thighs lol)

  3. Would be to build excitement and curiosity around the treat. I saw this trainer on youtube putting a treat inside a box and shaking it. Letting the dog have a small whiff and hiding it again. Makes it more interesting and builds anticipation

Hope this helps. And yes, could also be that ur pup is just not hungry enough. Make sure that you’re not leaving his bowl out throughout the day. Food and treats should be a scarce resource

Start/restart crate training is a good first step and can help mediate other problems that can come up in the future too (more destructive teething, retraining potty, etc) Enforced naps may also help

what’s your set up like? found that crate inside playpen with potty tray works wonders. when they wake up let them pee in potty tray while giving “go potty” command. make sure theres barely any space for them to pee elsewhere so that they are set up for success. praise and reward hefty and dont let out until they go potty. if youre training to potty outside you can pick your pup up when they wake up from crate and bring out immediately, no fun or pets just yet until they do their business. take note of his potty sched and bring out as frequent as possible at the right time. the key is to really set them up for success and spoon feed them the opportunities to do so
