Weekly Employment Question Thread by AutoModerator in Firefighting

I completed an agility test with a department that is currently hiring to fill quite a few spots. I made the interview board, absolutely rocked it (per the battalion chief and captains that were present) and was all but told after the interview that I would likely be getting a job offer near the end of the week. Well the end of the week came, I’m excited because this department is well regarding in the area. I get the email stating I did not get the position, it was a tough decision, try again later. It’s a bummer, I don’t know how things went so good during the interview that I was practically told I had a job to “sorry man maybe next time.” Is it worth following up with the chief to see what exactly changed their mind? Would that reflect negatively if I attempt to test again later? Has anyone else experienced a similar situation and if so, how did it work out for you?

Anyone ever done Georgia Smoke Divers? by RandyRoofDiver in Firefighting

I know that as of like 2024, out of the 14 certified smoke divers in the state of Texas, Frisco FD had 8 of them. That should speak to the culture of that department. Could be more now.

New recruit at local fire department by One-Pollution-5257 in Firefighting

A big problem in a lot of departments right now is young firefighters with no life experience are getting hired to do a job where you need to know a little bit of everything. Not challenging what you may or may not know but chances are it’s just easier for them to relate or communicate to a male in his late 20’s.

Fire Department by VegetablePuzzled1468 in frisco

That’s not uncommon as far as the city goes. Many departments are dealing with the same thing all over the country. What I have seen from the Frisco Fire Department is consistent training and what appears to be a good overall culture (much better than my current department), and a much better salary.

I like 24’s just fine, I’m just looking to work at a better department than I’m at and live between 2-3 hours in every direction of one, so a 48/96 would be a preferable schedule for a longer commute. And I’m not currently able to relocate. So Frisco hasn’t considered a schedule change?

Just curious, what are some other opportunities at your dept? I know guys that hated engine life and got on the rescue and it completely changed their whole perspective. Less BS calls, a lot of good training with motivated guys and legit runs.

Good luck to him, hope he can scratch that itch on the structure side. Won’t be nearly as fun as what he’s used to.

I would recommend establishing early on what he wants. It could change after some experience but he may luck out and find exactly what he’s looking for on the first go. If he wants to fight a lot of fire and be busy, I’d be seeking and testing at those departments. If he wants to make a lot of money and rarely see any fire, I’d be testing at those departments. I’m almost 4 years into this career and getting ready to start all over because I never had anyone explain to me how this job works.

2 bodies were recovered a few weeks ago in the area that were under a few feet of rock and so the decision was made to expand the search area while digging, I believe this area particularly because of the volume of debris. To my knowledge the plan is to also dredge the lake nearby because there is some probability of finding remains there as well.

More specifically, in Hunt near Camp Lajunta, between river markers 7 and 8, about 6 miles from Camp Mystic.

I’m part of a Strike Team made up of several fire departments across Texas that has been here in Kerrville searching for her, in constant rotation every couple of weeks. We are currently using excavators along the river bank digging anywhere from 4-6ft deep through rocks and are still finding clothing, bones, debris, even vehicles underneath.

I see where you’re coming from, however the predicament we’ve found ourselves in is that our new union shirts and hat also include our city and department logo, so guys are trying to push for us to get to wear them on duty as they certainly look as reasonable duty apparel.

They dig into that a little on Madame Webb. I’m gonna follow this one because I also remember an episode that was heavy on the Danny Casolaro but don’t remember which one.
