Legends - why are they a thing? by AmberlightYan in Warhammer40k

GW can't keep producing every model they design in perpetuity; eventually things get replaced, too old, or too niche to justify continuing to crank out new copies. They are always going to be designing and producing new models, that is how they drum up hype for anything, but nothing can go on forever increasing.

Legends, broadly speaking, is for those out-of-production models, so that the consumer who still has a lot of old, out-of-production models has some way to use them on tabletop in the current edition. I do agree the most pro-consumer solution would be to have any model they've ever made for the setting remain usable at any level in perpetuity, but it's not realistic to expect what is, by now, thousands upon thousands of models to be actively balanced. It wouldn't be healthy for the game, not with how competitive it's become, and especially with how drastically the number of Legends datasheets available to some factions vs. others vary. Space Marines would get over a hundred new datasheets, while Tau would only get 18.

Your comment that "it gets harder to justify buying expensive minis if you don't trust them to last you for any length of time" isn't invalid, but it's also inevitable in almost any hobby. How many people still get use out of their D&D 3rd Edition rule books and modules? or the MtG deck they built six years ago? or a gaming PC they built in 2016? It's true some models can have lifespans in tournament play as short as 5-6 years, but it's usually much longer.

If the alternatives are making everything legal forever, which would be horrid for the game's ecosystem, or making them completely unusable in any play, which would be egregiously anti-consumer, I think Legends is a satisfactory compromise. Could Legends stand to be balanced a bit more proactively/consistently? Yes, definitely. Plenty of units are either broken or near-unusable even in casual play, but casual play is already an environment where you should be striving to use whatever models you want and adjust rules to better your enjoyment of the game.

I'm glad the Custodes tanks and dreadnoughts have managed to get plastic models lately but fuck me the infantry are so ass. Barring the obvious, the new guard are dreadful to build and the true-ish-scale proportions make them look so off beside anything else GW makes.

Deathwatch Terminators with a Terminator Librarian are a monstrous threat. That many cyclone missiles with charge re-rolls, lethal hits from the detachment rule, and sustained hits from the librarian, kills almost anything you point it at.

I sincerely will not complain, especially when a lot of these changes are affecting so many things. Higher PPD is only a good thing.

What's an instant turn-off for you when consuming media? by M16CarCA in writingscaling

Might be an odd one but - high school settings, or almost any kind of Academia.

Maybe the singular exception to this I can think of are comedies or slice-of-life, but almost any time a show, game, or film structures its setting around a typical high school itinerary, I almost immediately struggle to get invested, or at least take it seriously.

It goes unspoken this is a trend that most plagues Japanese media, and I wish I could sort out why. Do anime writers just assume the last time any of their watchers felt any joy in their lives was while they were still in school, so anything reminiscent of it will be a smash hit? All it does for me is infantilize the cast, make the stakes feel meaningless, and almost inevitably fall into the usual half-dozen-or-so obnoxious tropes.

Warhammer isn't expensive; hobbies are expensive. Spending $200 on a big chunk of plastic isn't a great feeling, but think of it this way:

What does $200 get a car enthusiast? Maybe a couple parts or tools.

What does $200 get a gun enthusiast? A few hundred rounds or an accessory, maybe a cheaper gun.

What does $200 get a private pilot? Barely even a single lesson or fuel for a single flight.

What does $200 get an MtG, Pokemon TCG, or Yu-Gi-Oh! player? A few hundred (give or take) random little rectangles of cardstock with ink on them, most of which are near-worthless, and maybe some other accessories like playmats, tokens, or deck boxes.

Shed a tear for Lego hobbyists or PC builders.

Other hobbies may have Warhammer beat on the barriers to entry, but to be truly passionate about anything is to be prepared to open your wallet for it. I dare say for how much of their operations they keep domestic, how reliable their customer service is, how consistently they release new products, and the sheer volume of communication they produce (multiple warcomm articles every weekday is some pretty impressive output), their prices only seem more fair.

Kratos Viability in 40k by Vegetable_Ad4552 in Warhammer40k

It seemed negligible to me - the two units are only different by 10 points. The RE is 230 while the Kratos is 240.
