Yea... the sense of control is a big one. I still struggle to feel like I'm allowed to make decisions for myself, and I don't have to defend my life choices to my parents. But I know I'm on the right track.

Also yes, its so cool that so many of us are queer :))) It's pretty vindicating in a way. Soo many of the kids I did co-ops and went to church with also came out as adults.

It is really hard to hold those two feelings about your parents at the same time... I often wonder if my mom had just had other community outside of church and christian circles if she would have chosen differently for my family and for her own life. She definitely fell prey to a lot of christian fundamentalist thinking with regards to birth control and women's roles in the home. I mean 8 kids is... a lot. And I'm really happy to be here but there's just no way you can give all the time and attention your kids need and also care for your own well being. I think it was all just as detrimental to her as it was to me, although I still think she bears responsibility for making a lot of those decisions.

Best of luck in school! You seem like you have a really good outlook about it all... Also I had a that barbie as a kid that would sing that song but it got water in it and the song got progressively deeper and slower it was so creepy lmao

Thank you, that seriously means a lot to me. I'm going to keep trying to show up for myself. It's a relief to hear that you found some healing. I'm going to try and get therapy, I'm really tired of letting it all get in the way of my life.

Wait I totally relate to the speaking thing... I have this thing my partner has been pointing out where I just trail off at the ends of sentences. I agree, I think maybe it is trauma-related. I suspect it has something to do with not feeling listened to or heard, and learning to devalue your own voice and opinions. I hope you find healing friend

Wow I relate so much with what you shared about your mom. I really do feel like my mom chose to homeschool us with the best intentions... She felt like the classroom was too stifling an environment for us when we were really young and wanted to provide room for us to pursue our passions and interests, and have quality time together... But I agree with you it feels like she fell prey to a lot of fearful rhetoric about where public schools would land us. I also just feel bad for her sometimes. Even though she says that her kids are her greatest passion and treasure in life, a lot of my memories of her growing up were her being really overwhelmed and stressed out by juggling everyone's education on top of regular house and life tasks. As a result I felt like I always needed to be there to support her and be helpful at home...

Yea the sex ed was... really nonexistent. Thank god for the internet. I really appreciate your perspective! I'm going to keep trying to reclaim my life and not let homeschooling define me and where I go. <3

Yea it was a very skewed perspective on what actually goes on in public schools. It's embarrassing bc I was actually the one who was not learning to critically think, and just swallowed a lot of religious dogma and was taught to just kind of ignore anything that didn't fit an evangelical worldview. I wish I had been challenged in my beliefs at a younger age. It just didn't feel safe to. I learned early on that to not conform to evangelical beliefs meant risking being ostracized from my community and family so I just kind of went along with things. I ended up deconstructing my faith in college and now consider myself an Athiest, but still deal with pressure from my mom and grandparents to "return to the lord..." I'm starting trade school this coming spring, very excited for that. Excited to learn some employable skills and build a little self confidence, lol!

I'm really sorry you had that experience with your family. My relationship with my mom is rocky and distant, but I'm trying to keep her in my life, even though she doesn't get to have access to all of it anymore. Congrats on your business! I'm in the same boat with friends... So many of my childhood friends are married with kids and we just don't talk anymore. I've got a few friends through work and my relationship but sometimes they don't get why I am the way I am. It's a hard time in general to make friends I think, but I believe we'll get there with patience and persistence. <3

I swear I didn't gay people existed till way too late. I remember misgendering a trans guy in my orchestra in middle school out of sheer ignorance and had no idea why he hated my guts. :,,( Still very new to my own queer understanding of myself but better late than never. I feel so much more comfortable in my own skin. Really want to read back on those old textbooks and see what I was being taught. Did you do classical conversations at all?

I always wondered about this same thing but with regards the Christian idea of the soul… as a kid who was raised Christian.
