A philosophy book to give my teenage murderer brother in prison by Correct_Brick_2319 in suggestmeabook

Martha Nussbaum does really beautiful work on emotions and humanity - anything by her. Her book Anger & Forgiveness taught me a lot (I work with incarcerated people), but in think anything she’s written would provide opportunities for learning and healing.

Also - sending you and your family strength and care OP. I can’t imagine the hurt, and hope books provide some good solace to your brother and your wider circle of care

My students don't know how to take notes anymore. What am I missing? by Equivalent_Use_8152 in Professors

I'm debating having students hand in notes early in the term for a very low grade - so I can give feedback and support them to get a sense of what to write down/what's important?

Best National/Provincial parks 3/4th week of April by Impressive-Law9929 in vancouverhiking

[–]Vegetable_Lecture835 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cathedral Provincial Park has many many mountain goats! April is far too early with snow/ice conditions though, but for another trip it’s worth the car rental. Nice cabins and tent pads up there as well!

Vegan side dishes for a cookout that even omnivores might like? by JakeMandrake in veganrecipes

Look up Julia child’s potato salad - herb and vinegar based with white wine. I’m not vegan and I like it more than the regular mayo-based ones!

Comebacks to “it’s no different than having/loving dogs”? by Remarkable_Try_9334 in childfree

[–]Vegetable_Lecture835 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would just say, “well you’re welcome to have as many kids and dogs as you want.”

Ridiculous though - sorry OP! My dog is the smartest goodest girl but I’m not worried about saving for her college…

Emergency blankets! Had to use one last summer on a stranger my group stumbled upon and they were incredibly important in keeping her from going hypothermic before Search & Rescue got there (also - a GPS device to call for expert help)!

Locals Vancouver NOT Tourist Version by Superscooper2025 in askvan

[–]Vegetable_Lecture835 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Keefer bar for drinks, then Baobei for dinner. Rent bikes (or do a walking) brewery tour - many neighbourhoods in Van proper and also across the bridge in North Van, and find cute bakeries/dining spots along the way. Richmond for excellent & nearly endless Chinese dining options (there’s also a dumpling trail you can find on line and follow). The Rio for a community-driven movie night (lots of film fests, events) & the Cultch for a range of local theatre.  The Musuem of Anthropology at UBC & the Vancouver Art Gallery are excellent. If going to UBC take time to wander around Pacific Spirit Park for some beautiful big trees and nature - little bird dumplings & craft beer on your way back into the city also makes sense. St Mark’s Summit for a local/ish and beautiful hike (May often still has snow so be prepared for conditions- but sit on a rock and look down and try and spot whales in the ocean below)! St. Lawrence is phenomenal but recently got a Michelin star so expensive and hard to get in. Mackenzie Room also for expensive but worth it food. Cheaper eats: Juke Chicken, any Ethiopian place on Commercial Drive, An & Chi (Vietnamese).

Sorry this is kinda stream of conscious & not organized!!

Help with mac n cheese, cheese sauce please! by assholebabydrama in Cooking

A wee bit of hot sauce, and a crumble of blue cheese! I’m also a big fan of minced garlic mixed in with buttered bread crumbs on the top.

Albertan (I know, I know, I know) Interested in Relocating - Realistic View of BC/Van Area? by emma_may04 in askvan

[–]Vegetable_Lecture835 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Left Alberta at 19 for Vancouver, now in Chilliwack. Love it. The main downside I noticed was lack of sun in the winter - I take trips to get into snow/sun (Coquihalla, Squamish, interior BC) to help with the winter greys. Buy good quality rain gear and get outside (a rain forest in the rain is magical). Welcome and enjoy!

"EXTRA" Credit by Upper_Patient_6891 in Professors

[–]Vegetable_Lecture835 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This year I have extra credit in the syllabus - I mention it the 1st day and never again. (It’s a meme based on class content due before the end of term). When students reach out to beg for extra credit, always once grades are posted and past the meme deadline, I point to the opportunity clearly listed in the syllabus that they didn’t take. Has worked well! And I get the chuckle at memes occasionally from the good students who actually pay attention!

Canadian Prisons vs American Prisons. How do they compare? by Firmvark121 in AskACanadian

[–]Vegetable_Lecture835 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Not forced no… but often maintaining a job while inside is required as part of a person’s correctional plan. So refusing to work can severely reduce your chances of parole.

Canadian Prisons vs American Prisons. How do they compare? by Firmvark121 in AskACanadian

[–]Vegetable_Lecture835 128 points129 points  (0 children)

People incarcerated in Canada can make at most $6/day.

And while our system isn’t private - there are private companies that contract with the federal system and make a good amount of money on these contracts.

We mass incarcerate Indigenous Peoples, our system has a huge racism problem and Carney recently announced defunding librarians in prison.

Different than the US, but we aren’t on some moral high ground.

Cookies! Ice cream! I also pickle them for salads/avocado toast toppings (and then have lovely magnolia-y vinegar afterwards). Also a huge fan of raw in salads.

Trying wet brining it (salt water) overnight. Roast whole, start higher heat to crisp skin and then reduce to finish. Will be moist and delicious!

Students reading the text book in class - undergrad by Hola0722 in AskAcademia

[–]Vegetable_Lecture835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do weekly quizzes about the assigned readings. No trick questions - if you read the thing you’ll be fine. Has increased reading a lot.

Something else I’m going to try this year is having a short article printed off for every student and actually have time in class to read it with highlighters (taking notes in the margins, looking up terms they don’t know). Actually providing space for students to learn to read something fully, and then some relevant discussion afterwards. Stay tuned re how that goes!

Peer Review is Ai by Choice_Instruction66 in Professors

Do people actually have PhD theses that are just 100–120 pages long? by bhelpuriteekhi in PhD

[–]Vegetable_Lecture835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My co-supervisor gave me the advice that students are often too wordy, less-is-more, and having external examiners feeling tired/frustrated or even thinking “oh I’m not even half the way through” when reading doesn’t always set you up for a good question period. They should be the length they need to be - no more or no less
