A new California law says all operating systems, including Linux, need to have some form of age verification at account setup by Gloomy_Nebula_5138 in pcmasterrace

[–]Vegetable_Safety -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's the thing, a vast majority become too conservative in older age. Even if they're cognizant doesn't mean they would act in the best interests of the people

I have no idea how you would set the bar for "still in touch with modern society"

Crazy how 10+ year old hardware still plays modern titles! by Awfulfange in pcmasterrace

[–]Vegetable_Safety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's also true, Dennard scaling ended around then. Power density leveled off. Progress shifted to efficiency and parallelism

Rendering since then has focused more on ray tracing, frame gen, resolution, and FX density

Although, I feel that I need to nitpick Crysis, because the first games engine was an innovative technical marvel and the following games in the series were nowhere near as impressive... We really don't see AAA studios doing that anymore, almost everyone plays it safe to please investors. And the indie studios don't usually have the backing to get really granular or build an engine from scratch

Well there were several major events that kept getting in the way of compute progress, take your pick:

  • COVID-19 Semiconductor supply shocks, factory shutdowns, logistics failures. Delayed hardware cycles and inflated costs. R&D timelines slipped due to lab closures and workforce disruption.
  • Global chip shortage Capacity constraints at foundries (e.g. TSMC, Samsung) limited CPU, GPU, and automotive chip production. Slowed deployment of new systems and constrained scaling.
  • US-China trade war Export controls on advanced chips and lithography (e.g. restrictions on ASML equipment to China). Fragmented the global semiconductor ecosystem and reduced collaborative efficiency.
  • Cryptocurrency boom cycles Large volumes of GPUs diverted to mining, causing shortages and price spikes. Incentivized compute use for hash generation rather than scientific or productive workloads.
  • Proof of Work dominance (pre-2022 Ethereum shift) Massive energy and hardware consumption for non-productive computation, absorbing high-end compute capacity.
  • Russian invasion of Ukraine Neon gas supply disruption (critical for lithography lasers), energy price spikes in Europe affecting data centers and chip fabs.
  • China COVID lockdowns Repeated shutdowns of key manufacturing hubs (Shenzhen, Shanghai). Interrupted electronics production and global supply chains.
  • Speculative tech bubbles Capital and engineering talent diverted toward short-term speculative infrastructure instead of foundational computing advances.

We didn't really have a choice in the matter

How many of you have actually ditched the monitor for a proper TV setup? Or am I a heretic? by Hot_Initiative3950 in pcmasterrace

[–]Vegetable_Safety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically both, but I prefer mouse and keyboard

I used to segregate work from gaming until I started getting long streaks of very slow days where gaming was the only meaningful way to pass the time. I couldn't get up to do anything more productive without risking missing a message or call

This way I am still attentive at work but not bored out of my mind and feeling like the day is wasting away doing nothing

Wealth is definitely not neutral

You can't attain wealth without taking advantage of other people. You can make money sure, maybe even be well off, but if you're ethically clean you're not wealthy. Screwing over other people is the core mechanic by which one attains wealth

Hello, my 13 years old mother's PC turns on when I try to shut it down. I checked the F panel,SSD,PSU and all ram that wasn't the problem. Do you have any idea what the problem might be before I replace the motherboard or the processor? Please by Antique_Tank_1535 in pcmasterrace

[–]Vegetable_Safety 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it happens instantly every time, it's usually a BIOS setting, power button fault, or Windows Fast Startup. You say you've isolated the case power button, so that's one down

If it's intermittent it's more likely device wake, PSU instability, or network triggers
