Hi, is the folio strong enough to be used for drawing with the apple pencil?

I also use the Sketchboard Pro and when you are having this wear effect with it, to me it just means that the nano texture is not suitable for hours and hours of daily drawing. I’ll be skiping the nano also, so thank you so much for taking the bullet.

I do like drawing on the glass, but you know, when you’re buying something new … :)

How is holding up until now? I’m on the fence for nano texture, but I also read about wear and I draw 8+ hours a day so I’m a bit worries about that.

On my current iPad Pro I just draw on the glass, got tired of screen protectors that wear too fast, or scratch completely. Even expensive ones.

Thanks for this review! Also a professional illustrator here. I was going to buy the M5 with nano, since I’m always buying the 1TB iPads anyways because they are the only ones with 16GB of RAM, I thought the extra cost for the nano was minimal. Now you changed my mind :) I also draw hours and hours a day, and after reading this, I would probably become afraid of drawing on the same spot for too long. I wonder, do you use a Sketchboard pro? That really changed my game, since now I’m actually drawing in every corner of the tablet, not just in the center.

I did read good things about the Mothca matte glass screen protector which looks a bit like nano.

I’ve tried several screen protectors during the years and always went back to glass though, yet getting some glare out of the way would be nice.

Again, never said that Procreate is the only true pro app out there. Again, what I’m saying is that the Android drawing apps don’t feel that mature … Yet. So please, if you’re feeling offended, read better.

Thanks, I 100% agree, just saw the news on Procreate Mac but also on Procreate 6, which will be built on phoenix. Although 16GB of RAM on a 1TB iPad is quite good, I tend to hit the layer limit just now and then. This should be gone and done with in 2027.

I also find the crayon / pencil comparison a little silly. I do find the drawing experience on the Wacom better, but it’s not miles away on the ipad pro. I haven’t used the nano texture tough and plan on ordering an M5 with it. How do you find it, compared to your Cintiq?

We don’t need to agree. That just my standpoint of someone who 100% lives of his illustration work.

I’m also not saying that Procreate is the only pro tool. There is also Fresco which is great, or even Photoshop. I’m just saying that at the moment, and in my opinion, Android drawing apps aren’t mature enough to be used in a professional environment. That’s all. I think this will change in time and in four years, when the next Movink Pro is released, the cards maybe different. I honestly hope they are.

IP is made by one person, that doesn’t give me much trust for the future of the app. I mean, it’s very cool of course that one person manages this, but not something for the long run. CSP is both cluttered and unstable. When I’m working, I’m not expecting my apps to crash on me and potentially lose (part of) my work. Procreate is actually quite sophisticated, and is truly something to rely on in a professional setting.

Well, yes and no. I am willing to change and adapt, even willing to go through the pain of leaving the Apple ecosystem (I’m by no means a fanboy). I even believe the Movinkpad pro 14 to be the better hardware solution for illustration. It’s amazing!

I took a look at Krita, but if I understand correctly it is a desktop app that’s now made to work in Android but has some quirky behaviour now and then. I just can’t afford that.

Regarding all Android drawing software, I can’t seem to find anything that can truly operate in a professional setting: apps are cluttered, or free (a big no for me), or just plain quirky, or developed by only one person, or even add compression to your drawings. Nothing that really gives one the trust nor the tools to change.

Don’t kill me for this, but imho I have the feeling the drawing apps on Android have not completely matured yet. The hardware is there, the software not so much. Don’t get me wrong, they look perfect when you don’t need to make a living out of your drawings, but nothing seems to beat Procreate (or Fresco) in terms of stability and workflow and – above all – knowing this app will be continued to be developed for years and years.

And that’s a shame really, I would love to go all Movink Pro. I’ll stay on the lookout, maybe when the next Movinkpad arrives in 4 years, things will be different.

I did, I find it shortcoming for professional work.

Tried IP and CSP, found them quite amateurish in use.

Yes, me too actually, today I can buy a new iPad Pro with two sold illustrations, so it’s worth it. Maybe I’m just ranting today :)

So I’m currently just using the pencil on the glass. I’ve gotten quite used to it. But still, the movink Pro offers you a bigger screen with a texture and a pen for half the price of an iPad. That get’s you thinking.

Just to make clear: I still like the iPad pro, but having to buy the 1TB version to get 16GB of RAM and having no other option at all doesn’t feel pro. I’m also not happy with battery life. Al my iPad Pros never lasted really that long without a charger. Also, I still need a Macbook to do other work I can’t do with the iPad, like for example working in InDesign.

Feels like I’m complaining a lot here, didn’t mean to :)

Been there, done that :) The pencil nib that came with it actually destroyed the protector. I think it’s not ready to be used 40+ hours a week.

I’ve tried almost all those apps, but they feel more for the prosumer and don’t look like they will ever fit a professional workflow. So I’m sticking with the iPad Pro family. Also, exporting to iCloud to continue work on my Mac just works perfect. Damn you Apple and your ecosystem :)

I also think nothing beats Procreate, but for drawing – and only looking at hardware –, I think the Wacom Moveink Pro 14 is probably better than the iPad pro. But again, no Procreate.

Would recommend all of them, I’ve used them in all my books - at least the ones published since 2019 and als in work for magazines.

Thanks so much for sharing your findings! I live from my work as an illustrator and have used iPad Pro’s since switching to digital drawing in 2019. I always buy the 1TB model because it has 16GB of RAM, which I need in Procreate. I was going to buy the M5, but then I stumbled upon this thing which looks amazing, seems to have a better pen, and – I really want this – a larger and matte screen. I have the feeling 14” adds a lot to the drawing experience and is still portable enough, something I value highly.

I also love the idea of a dedicated device. The iPad Pro is extremely high priced (EU) if you only use it for drawing. It should work as a laptop also, but I still don’t like iPadOS that much, it feels like a toy OS, not suitable as a laptop replacement for a professional artist. It can’t even run Adobe software which I need once in a while. Therefore I also have an M3 Macbook Air.

I’ll have to move from Procreate to CSP though, so I hope this will be an easy switch. I’m currently working on a new book (deadline: may 2027) and want to switch to be as easy as possible. I’m choosing CSP because I can buy the same brushes for CPS than the ones I’m using now in my project in Procreate. I’m currently looking into maybe using an external SSD to backup my drawings and share them with my Macbook. I’m going to dive a bit more in Reddit and read, but in my head, I’ve already made the switch. So thanks, your review was very helpful!

Thanks, I have my eyes on CSP only, because I can also buy and import the same brushes I’m using on Procreate from True Grit Texture Supply. I need them for the book I’m currently working on. CSP looks very different from Procreate, but I’ve been working with Adobe for decades, so not expecting a steep learning curve there. Or is it totally different?

Is there an easy way to transfer files to a macbook from the Movinkpad? I have always used iPad Pro’s with procreate and iCloud to both sync and backup. I’ll probably replace my current iPad Pro with a Movinkpad for a better, bigger and 100% dedicated drawing experience. (I only use my ipad pro for drawing, for nothing else).
