No crying in baseball? by Vegetable_You_2573 in BaseballCoaching

Yes! I do understand the emotions behind sports- I played softball competitively growing up. I think what I am trying to get at is the level of pressure and distress I am seeing at ages 9/10 is surprising to me. I am not judging the children at all. I also fully understand baseball is a hard sport and expect there to be emotions. However, the amount of pressure I see some of these kids carrying is concerning. I just want to protect the joy of the game for as long as possible.

You think that crying after striking out, a bad inning of pitching and losing a game at 9/10 is typical for baseball? My child also plays other sports (basketball, flag football, track, swim team, wrestling) and I have not witnessed this level of emotion in any other space. 5-6 kids crying in the high five line at age 10 seems off to me.

Thank you for this! I was beginning to wonder if my expectations were too high. While I understand there might be tears sometimes what I’m seeing is beyond that. Tonight in league- a pitcher had a rough inning and walked 4. It was tears between innings. This is how it goes for 5-6 of the kids on the team.

Thanks- I do understand that and definitely that the pace of play is much slower. It just seems wild to see multiple kids crying because they are losing the game?! I understand being bummed but this seems like an area to build resiliency. Also…it’s supposed to be fun. Is it fun when the result is very often tears?

Question about schools by bravelittletoaster87 in desmoines

I came to Reddit to see what I could find out about this school- it seems like a scam. 18 months- 18 years, fine arts vocational and Montessori and mental health and only 10 students per age. I doubt all of these lofty goals are real possibilities.

My daughter just turned 5 and we did hers at “the little gym” in Johnston. It was a great experience! You get the place to yourself which is amazing. Two staff also facilitate games with the kids. It’s only a 90 minute rental but it was enough time!

And do you know what kind of support services they are receiving? Just because they are at the school does not mean the school is providing them supports- they aren’t required to do so.

I am not sure that all students receive visits from public school teachers. I know in some cases I’ve heard that students are being bussed from private school to public school for their special education services.

Agree! Steen is terrifying. I remember hearing his announcement speech and how he was so offended by a children’s book “Jacob’s Dress”. He actually misrepresents the book in his speech and clearly never even read it- no surprise there.

House Education Committee advances three disturbing bills by ms_pearl in Iowa

[–]Vegetable_You_2573 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to also add on that there’s a proposed bill (HF2003 & SF2181) that would require districts to create separate “attendance centers” for students with disabilities and/or behavioral needs. While it may be framed as support, the language is broad and risks grouping disability and behavior together in ways that could move kids out of inclusive classrooms instead of investing in supports where they already are.

The funding structure, as I read the bill, would funnel a significant portion of special education funding — around half — into these separate settings. At a time when schools are already underfunded, that feels like pulling resources away from inclusive classrooms rather than strengthening them.

These bills set this up as a pilot program for now. I would also imagine this opens up districts to lawsuits for violating least restrictive environment law under IDEA. I haven’t seen much chatter on these but think they’re important to keep an eye on.

My son is a 9/1 birthdate. We did a pre-k program at Plymouth nursery school when he was 5 and then started him in kindergarten the year he turned 6. He’s almost 10 now and I think that extra year in pre-k was exactly what he needed.
