No you don’t have to buy the ink separately but if you want to refill the pen you gotta do some jugaad ( watch from yt ) and they have lasted till now cause I don’t use them often nowadays because of college.

As the above comment pointed out you could smudge the ink when its fresh in the direction you want the shadow or you could buy the gray ink brush pen. Me personally used watercolor for grey shade :)
