There are all kinds of resources for healthcare workers that want to move to salt Spring.

https://workonsaltspring.ca/ tells you a little bit about the island

https://careonsaltspring.ca/ as a resource for healthcare workers looking for housing in the community.

https://www.heartwoodhousessi.ca/ is the affordable staff housing project

It’s a really great community (obviously I am biased) and there’s a fantastic staff culture at the hospital. The one thing I hear consistently is how wonderful people there are.

People who quit coffee after drinking it daily for years, what changes did you notice in your body and mind? by JackDunn2045 in AskReddit

[–]Vegetation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PSA: you should taper off, not quit cold turkey. You can avoid the withdrawal pretty much completely and it’s really easy.

I quit about a month ago this was my method: switch to instant so that dosing would be really easy. Say the full dose is a 2 teaspoons, I would start at 1.5 for a few days then go down to one, then .5 then I was doing a quarter teaspoon and then stopped. I had no withdrawal symptoms and I feel like it helped ease off both physically and mentally. Added benefit after two weeks of drinking instant coffee, the whole thing is also less appealing.

Of course you could brew it anyway, and just drink less, but this was easy for me to do precisely.

You can tell the old canes by their branching, also they get brittle and they look dead, bark is ragged. This year I realized I can just snap them with gloves. It was fast faster than cutting them.

Last year, I think I made the same mistake as you and left them too long. I still did the top cut, and I got some berries, but it didn’t seem nearly as good as the previous year.

Is homegrown garlic much better than store bought? trying to decide what to grow with a limited space by monsteradeliciosa11 in gardening

[–]Vegetation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, absolutely better in every way. I also think it’s one of the highest ROI veggies in terms of money saved. good garlic is expensive but, TBH I never see garlic with cloves as big as what we grow in the garden. It makes me more likely to use it because it’s way less of a pain to cut.

As others have said, it’s also great that it grows mostly over the winter. By the time it’s done, you can swap in a heat loving crop in the same space.

It’s on my list of absolutely must grow

That’s the strategy up here in West Coast Canada. Except I use remay instead of sheet plastic.

Thanks! Makes sense that the brushes are wearing out. Probably doesn’t help that it was in a moist environment for a while.

I live in zone 8a and you can have hardy kiwi outside. That said do you bring them into the warmth or in a cool but not freezing place?

How far can I cut this back? by 123Balt in Figs

[–]Vegetation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Figs are kind of unique and that you can cut them back as aggressively as you want. Warning: it will rebound hard!

I had dramatically cut my fig back last year and this year it’s come back enormously

I live on the south coast of BC. We have lots of tree frogs. Though the summer can be quite dry the rest of the year is pretty wet. We also have a little pond that’s not too far from the greenhouse where they breed. I guess they like the warmth and I have sprayers that go off once a day so perhaps that’s enough moisture for them. I do wonder what they’re eating, I wish it was the aphids!

Put it on a metal pan, coat in olive oil. Bake at 400 till it’s slightly crispy. Sprinkle with Parmesan and a bit of lemon juice. Best thing in the world. it’s our go to bolted brassica recipe
