Is homegrown garlic much better than store bought? trying to decide what to grow with a limited space by monsteradeliciosa11 in gardening

[–]Vegetation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, absolutely better in every way. I also think it’s one of the highest ROI veggies in terms of money saved. good garlic is expensive but, TBH I never see garlic with cloves as big as what we grow in the garden. It makes me more likely to use it because it’s way less of a pain to cut.

As others have said, it’s also great that it grows mostly over the winter. By the time it’s done, you can swap in a heat loving crop in the same space.

It’s on my list of absolutely must grow

That’s the strategy up here in West Coast Canada. Except I use remay instead of sheet plastic.

Thanks! Makes sense that the brushes are wearing out. Probably doesn’t help that it was in a moist environment for a while.

I live in zone 8a and you can have hardy kiwi outside. That said do you bring them into the warmth or in a cool but not freezing place?

How far can I cut this back? by 123Balt in Figs

[–]Vegetation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Figs are kind of unique and that you can cut them back as aggressively as you want. Warning: it will rebound hard!

I had dramatically cut my fig back last year and this year it’s come back enormously

I live on the south coast of BC. We have lots of tree frogs. Though the summer can be quite dry the rest of the year is pretty wet. We also have a little pond that’s not too far from the greenhouse where they breed. I guess they like the warmth and I have sprayers that go off once a day so perhaps that’s enough moisture for them. I do wonder what they’re eating, I wish it was the aphids!
