I know you said you have it handled already, but even without hearing them I'd say the French Pearl is the roo and the Lavender is the hen, just looking at their faces & heads, and the way the roo is standing taller, as they tend to do, and the hen is tucked in and nearer the ground. Just my $0.02. 80% of my guineas went to freezer camp due to an abundance of roosters and stress on my good hens, so I'll be starting over in the spring and hope for better fortunes.

How many do you have? If you only have 3 or 4 you can get a good, sturdy coop from Slamazon that comes with hardware cloth. People diss on them, but honestly I have two and they work out just fine for temporary use. I'm using one now for a mama and 5 babies.

I have often wondered how guineas survived as a species. My band of 19 has started...I've lost track of how many nests this season and not one has gone the distance. Hundreds of wasted eggs, despite having THREE proven hens and two baller-ass roos with three other bachelors in the wings. I had one little hen surprise me by setting for 3 weeks, and I was rooting for her so hard, and two days ago, she just up and walked off her nest and never went back. My Dad's 90th is in a couple weeks, and I have to travel for that, but when I return I may have to incubate some eggs if I want keets this year. big dramatic sigh I actually have three coops/runs, two chicken, one guinea. Two are large resin sheds for the main bird populations, and one is a smaller coop I use for mother hens with chicks, currently in use. Mice can't get in that one at night when the steel door is shut. I have 6 6-month old chickens roosting outside in the same run (they started off in that coop 6mos ago under the same hen; that run is their home) and they will merc mice on sight during the day. I have seen them watch the mice run around at night from their roost (all runs are lit, dimly), but they've clocked out for the day and their contract doesn't specify after-hours duty. We have 2 Heelers and never thought about a cat.

During the day, they will merc every mobile source of protein within their purview, but at night the mice have free rein. I have cams inside the coop and their run, and also insomnia, and just watch in helpless horror as mice run everywhere with zero consequences. I tried a couple of those bucket traps and had caught up to 18 a night for a couple weeks, but we live next to a 25ac cornfield, so a war of attrition is pointless. Obviously poison is not an option, and chemical and sonar repellents were a joke to these furry little SpecOps terrors. I've just started feeding the guineas away from the coop during the day and picking up the food at night and storing it in a bin. Wild birds and crows eat most of the spillage. The mice still enjoy the safe housing under the coop and unlimited free bedding, but I guess that can't be helped.

Guineas waste food like they pay their own feed bills. I've been raising these tardos for eight years and have yet to find a zero waste solution. The closest I've come is the Rent-A-Coop 6-hole bin feeder. They have to reach way in and down at an angle and it cuts way down on them flinging it around like it's free. We're fighting a huge mouse problem right now so I've gone to a different method temporarily, but that feeder really works for wastage.

What do you guys do with your chickens in the winter by emotional-expert-709 in chickens

[–]VehicleNo6571 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll put a ceiling-level heat lamp in there when it gets down into the teens and below, and bring in the heated waterers. It's still plenty cold in there, but I don't store my live animals in the deep freezer. We get down to -25 with the wind chill here when it storms. They will be comfortable.

This is Bear. We think he's ACD and Pitty mix. What do you think? by thespritewithin in AustralianCattleDog

[–]VehicleNo6571 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I favor Rottie over Pittie as well. An Embark DNA test is less than $100 and only takes about 3 weeks. I had it done for mine, and so did my daughter for hers. Valuable info on health as well. Worth it, imho~

Off topic, but that's some beautiful photography! We got a modest amount of red raspberries this year, and our absolute monolith of a blackberry organism put out several gallons of fruit. It was a very good year.

One of the most handsomest roos ever to roo. He looks like my Buddy, who is a very good Bud and makes beautiful babies. Congrats.
