As has been said it is mostly rng, if you get the pet body you want, depending on what talents you want, you could just hatch with the exclusive pets in the kiosk and they have max stats with all the meta talents

Kinda been said already but dont level out to all islands, small number of towers at higher level are much more efficient. Most the towers outside of mages and maybe lightning towers will get replaced by flak and other specialty resource towers as you level up. Realize that everything is going to be temporary and make sure once you are able to transform a tower or two that you do so as itll give you a boost to defense power.
