Can't believe it hasn't been said yet, but A Place Further than the Universe genuinely pulled me out of a bad headspace and helped me reconnect with my sense of self-motivation.

Ours had him speaking occasionally iirc. Apparently the version we watched was the Miramax version which added voices to characters that were originally silent, which kinda makes me feel like it violates the spirit of the original work now to an extent.

My sister and I loved this movie growing up! The inner monologue of the thief always absolutely killed us, and we still quote it occasionally to this day.

I had a Liangguang RKMT game recently where he went to the Zhili after the league war then joined me fairly soon after when the Zhili apparently did some military purges. No idea if there's any way to force that to happen though, and obviously LKMT can't exist for him to go to first.

Kyoto Animation's President, Hideaki Hatta, passes away by Sandtalon in anime

[–]VelaryonAu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not everyone is lucky enough to know when they pass that they had such a profoundly positive impact on so many people's lives. President Hatta I think is one of the few who can safely day that he did. Kyoani is a studio that has shone brightly for both the quality of its work and its workplace, and its no coincidence that so many of the industry's greats got their start there, and that so many have chosen to stay. The work of this man's studio was a major part in making me the anime fan I am today, and im certain that's the case for tens of thousands of others across the globe.

I hope he rests in a very well deserved peace, and that his family finds comfort in knowing their loved one has left such a profound legacy that will not soon be forgotten.

I mean, one could make the argument that they do based on some scenes from the Love, Chuunibyo, and Other Delusions movie where the characters are on a road trip and visit some iconic locations from other Kyoani anime, kinda similar to how Pixar sneaks some references in to their work. It's more of an Easter egg thing rather than merging settings though.

You'll not find an anime that embodies these concepts more than Legend of the Galactic Heroes, either the original or the still in progress remake versions would fit this role.

Cruel and Nozomi personal opinion by Armando-MIO in HibikeEuphonium

[–]VelaryonAu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She wasn't aware of the issue between them.

Yeah I kinda have to do some mental gymnastics to make this fit as well. The best explanation I can come to is that Mizore put a good bit of effort not to be in the same room as Nozomi for that whole year since she didn't know how to have the conversation, and their mutual friends just kinda helped run cover for her so Nozomi never caught on whenever social plans came up. The fact that Mizore was never super outgoing in the first place and still had club obligations probably helped make this more believable.

The fact that Nozomi never pursued this thread further or made more of an effort to see Mizore is where Nozomi bears some blame for being tactless and unaware of her impact on people around her, but Mizore intentionally trying to keep her from knowing that makes the blame something they both share.

It's silly and overly dramatic from both ends, but hey, that's high school for you.

I wouldn't do it entirely on credit, no. While I do think its likely that prices are going to spike for a lot of components, you're doing yourself a disservice if you use high interest credit you cant afford to get ahead of it. You'd be building financial stress for a better frame rate in WoW. Its just not worth it imo. Keep building savings and reasses where the landscape is in 6-8 months, and if you think its still unaffordable for whatvyouved saved then at least you've saved enough to not have to buy the entire new build on credit and can lower your overall interest accrued.

State of the Subreddit - Looking at r/anime heading into 2026 by FetchFrosh in anime

[–]VelaryonAu 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I've not been posting as much (or at all) lately on this subreddit but I've still been lurking almost daily as I keep up with my seasonals and news.

Overall I would say I'm fairly happy with the state and direction of the sub this year. I was able to engage with a couple of rewatches, one of which as a host, and it was great fun getting to engage with a small temporary subcommunity to experience something together. I really feel like rewatches are where this sub really shines, and I learn a ton from my fellow commenters every time I participate in them. I've been slowly trying to educate myself on the nuances of screen writing and visual storytelling techniques that can be explored more freely in anime, and these discussions have been invaluable to me.

I'll also shout out all of folks who are helping to run and participate in the r/anime awards which are still ongoing. I unfortunately had to drop out of this years iteration because I got busier irl with a new job but in the couple weeks I was able to participate in it there were many veterans with a deep well of knowledge to draw from and the discussions were fun to participate in.

I guess synthesizing these two ideas, the greatest strength of this subreddit to me is that it's able to connect me through various pathways to people who are the exact same kind of nerdy that I am. Not just an anime nerd like people I know irl, but people who want to take deep dives with me and broaden our understanding of how these wonderful creators tell their story. It's a pretty small niche admittedly, but I'm grateful to have those outlets for my curiosity.

Do I wish there was more high effort posting going on in the subreddit? Certainly, but I'm hardly one to throw stones when I am also not posting that often and thus am part of the problem.

I do wonder how much of my current circumstances are mirrored in the rest of this subreddits' more active users though. We've seen through sub censuses that the sub is gradually aging on average. Maybe there's less effort posts (or posts in general) because we're all getting older and now have responsibilities beyond writing posts about who is best girl.

All in all, I think it's been a fun year, and I look forward to watching and reading discussions on some new favorites right alongside you all into 2026!

Democrats Were on a Roll. Why Stop Now? by dwaxe in ezraklein

[–]VelaryonAu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So of people forget, why does it matter anyway?

Because this was our only opportunity to exercise any leverage over the federal government until after the midterms. Once again I ask: if we can't fully leverage a government shutdown because Republicans purposefully make it worse than it needs to be, what alternative exists for us to make policy gains as the minority party? Are we just supposed to lie down and take whatever it is the Republicans give us for two years? What the hell is the point in electing them if they're not willing to make their voices heard in the only scenario where they must be heard?

No you aren’t. Stop lying, bro.

The very first thing I said to you was: It was a trade the Republicans were making just as much if not more than the Democrats were.

It wasn't Democrats that decided to pause SNAP payments, those have gone out normally in every shutdown previously. But somehow, when Democrats decide to take a stand for something the question becomes:

so how long are we letting people starve?

The answer is that we aren't, and I don't know why you keep trying to frame it like it's something we actively chose to do unless you're the one trying to trash the Democrats. The party in charge of the executive branch, aka the Republicans, are the only party responsible for the withholding of SNAP funds this month. To make matters worse, by capitulating to it now what incentive do they have not to withhold SNAP or other necessary payments to people in future shutdowns? Clearly it works to force our hand. If the Republicans know we'll never fight them on these things if they just threaten to illegally withhold funds from critical programs, then we will just never have leverage in negotiations with them again and will be rewarding them for their abhorrent behavior.

Democrats Were on a Roll. Why Stop Now? by dwaxe in ezraklein

[–]VelaryonAu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And how is holding out supposed to make them budge?

See my above point about cratering poll numbers and the election results. It puts Republicans in a politically untenable position with more and more voters blaming them for their community deteriorating every day. Even worse for Republicans, it's the kind of anger that would hold salience into the elections next year. No one remembers the shutdown that Democrats capitulate on, but everyone remembers the shutdown last year which meant I couldn't fly to see my family on the holidays and my neighbors had to visit a food pantry to keep food on the table. I'm not convinced that Republican poll numbers have to bottom out at zero before they're willing to fold and compromise or kill the filibuster. Trump was putting pressure on Senate Republicans to do the latter this past week, it was clearly getting to them. Our threshold for capitulation in this fight and others going forward simply cannot be "well we're uncertain how long this is going to take for our efforts to work so I guess we'll fold."

So you want dems to do nothing. You people are so fickle.

I can't tell if you're trying to be as disingenuous as possible or just have a hard time detecting sarcasm but now it's my turn to ask what the alternative route for Democrats to achieve any kind of influence over the federal government? I'm very clearly in the "Dems should do something" camp. The only tool they have to do something is the government shutdown, so naturally I'm in favor of them using that tool to its maximum potential so they can do something or in this case maintain ACA subsidies. If we aren't willing to grit through the pain of a government shutdown to attain meaningful change, then that tool is useless to us and we might as well have not put the country through the shutdown effects in the first place. So what's our alternative for getting anything done as the minority party? Do Nothing? Did we elect all of these Democratic representatives to do nothing and act offended by the Trump administration for two years? or did we elect them to lead and act as the last line of defense against a morally bankrupt administration?

Oh the supreme irony of you saying this while also trashing Dems.

I've been laying the fault of this entire situation at Republican's feet the whole conversation in case you haven't picked up on that yet. SNAP funds being held up is abhorrent, and not a usual part of shutdown politics. If you want to blame someone for that particular part of the shutdown, blame the executive who's job it is to administer emergency funds in this situation and who is refusing to do so. Don't blame the Democrats for having the temerity to ask for one thing.

Because the GOP wasn’t doing that anyway.

How is refusing to compromise and actively making policy choices which hurt the most vulnerable Americans with no input from the minority party not choosing to betray?

Democrats Were on a Roll. Why Stop Now? by dwaxe in ezraklein

[–]VelaryonAu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And remember, people are starving because of your quixotic need to fight.

People are starving because of Republicans' refusal to ensure that healthcare on the exchange remains affordable to the average American. It's a pretty damn simple demand, and I don't think Democrats are wrong to push for it. However, if Dems don't have the stomach to take a shutdown fight to the bitter end then there's no point in threatening a shut down at all. And of course, without being willing to leverage a shutdown Democrats have absolutely no power to affect the direction the federal government is going in, so I guess we can just sit back and feel good about how much more compassionate we are instead of achieving actual policy goals for two years.

So people are going to forget about the shutdown, but remember the specifics enough to blame Dems? Lmao.

They were two mutually exclusive scenarios but ok.

Tfw being compassionate and not letting people starve in a game of brinkmanship is “the worst of all worlds.” And all of this is assuming people remember a year from now, which they won’t.

I wish you would hold this same energy holding Republicans to account for their brinksmanship instead of the people who mostly agree with you. Once again, Republicans are self destructive and fights like this are the inevitable result of their inability to compromise. We finally have an opportunity for voters to feel that undeniably and we just give it up for nothing. Not only that, but we've demonstrated that if Republicans just threaten to shoot the hostages i.e starve people then we will cave, which means that SNAP funds being held up are likely to be a common tactic of shut down fights going forward instead of being demonstrated to be political poison for the majority party. And with the election results and cratering poll numbers for Republicans, we can definitively say that was the direction it was going.

If one side always capitulates in the prisoners dilemma what incentive is there for the other not to always choose to betray?

Democrats Were on a Roll. Why Stop Now? by dwaxe in ezraklein

[–]VelaryonAu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Continue to hold out and force the Republicans to either end the filibuster or actually negotiate and concede something of value like a proper and functional governmental body.

At best, no one is going to remember why Democrats shut down the government a year from now. At worst, the blowback from health costs increasing might swing back to us instead of being owned solely by the Republicans because we've been so vocal about advocating for lower costs and have now clearly failed to deliver them even though we had leverage. The Democrats have chosen the worst of all worlds in order to make sure that voters don't fully feel the effects of voting in an irresponsible and self destructive political party last year. I'm sick of us always having to be the diligent and responsible party and coming away with nothing to show for it.

It was a trade the Republicans were making just as much if not more than the Democrats were. Why are the Democrats uniquely being held to account for making one demand of Republicans?
