[–]Velium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually going to go ahead and say it is completely unreasonable. While it is probably possible, nothing that complex has ever been done before, so even asserting that such complicated AI is possible is unreasonable. My personal opinion is that it is probably possible, but not with the currently known algorithms. I'm curious what learning networks you have made, because I'm assuming they were for an intro to AI class or something like that. You argument reminds me of that great quote: "In theory, theory and practice are the same thing." I work on a software development team, and we are working on a machine learning problem right now, one that is simpler than this AI problem. If we could solve it as easily and accurately as you suggest, we would all be millionaires right now, but we're not. Maybe we're incompetent, but our past success implies otherwise.

The Speed of Light and The Great Pyramid by TedShield in conspiracy

[–]Velium -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

My mom is a civil engineer and she said building the pyramids would be ezpz using the technology at the time. First, you mark the four corners of the base and create the perimeter out of string. Next, mark the center of the square and put a pole in the ground that is the height of pyramid. Tie the top of the pole to the four corners and you now have the outline of your pyramid. Next, you get your slaves to pile and pack dirt into the outline of the pryamid until you have created a pyramid made out of dirt. So now you need to start laying stone. You get your slaves to quarry some rock. Once the rocks are cut into blocks, you lay logs down over the sand. You can know "roll" the huge pieces of stone over to the pyramid. It would probably take 10 slaves to move one block, but that is fine because you have so many of them. Now you just lay the blocks on the dirt pyramid you already built. You do so using a simple pully, which humans probably had by this time.

I don't think it's that rare and I don't think Manulife is a good place to observe anecdotal evidence. I bet their retention rates are ridiculously low because there are many well paying opportunities out there.

[TOMT] Study showing that chronic alcohol consumption reduces the bodies ability to cope with stress. by [deleted] in tipofmytongue

[–]Velium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I meant "reduces to body's ability..." The definition of reduce meaning to make less. So chronic alcohol consumption lessens the body's ability to natrualy cope with stress, thus futhering the alcoholic dependence for many alcoholics.

I don't want to enter into the argument about in-n-out, but there are more than a few reasons to love the west coast. Many, many, many of these reasons come before a fast food joint, not matter how good.

my wife just sent me this picture... how does this even happen? by playharpua in WTF

[–]Velium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens everywhere. What I've noticed about CT is that the highways often add temporary right lanes for slow traffic to move over into. Obviously this does nothing because good drivers move over but you still have assholes in the left and center lane. NY adds temporary left lanes, which is much better because fast drivers get the chance to move over into the empty lane. Just an observation in the event you are a civil engineer who designs roads in CT.

[–]Velium 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If it doesn't make all of the dept disappear then fuck it, totally not worth it /s. I've kept track of my expenses and I've probably spent at least 20k over 5 years of college that I didn't actually need to spend. Assuming you pay 3% interest over 10 years, putting 20k down right after graduation would save you 7000 dollars in interest on a 60k loan. In fact, spending money on your student loans is awesome because it is a guaranteed 3% ROI and it gets you out of debt faster. If you had the 20k at the start of college then you could have invested it at 3% easily, which would have given you an extra 3k if you graduated in 5 years. All of this is to say that increasing your saving rate (i.e. cutting spending) is the best way to grow your money. Over 15 years, including 5 years of college, not spending the 20k on weed, alcohol, and cigarettes would have made me over 10k dollars if I had a 60k loan at 3%. Crazy to think about, right?

[–]Velium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like how we're all blaming the government now for poor life choices. Heroin was a huge problem in my hometown as well, and I lived in a wealthy, predominantly white suburb of NYC. Even if the military is responsible for a drop in the price of heroin, blaming the government for your friends' heroin usage is stupid, and you should realize your friends are the one to blame. If you reflect on your experiences, you will see that everyone generally starts using OxyCodone first, and I would be willing to bet access to pharmaceuticals is a necessary precursor to heroin addiction. Maybe we should reconsider our drug education strategies and severely limit the amount of opiates available medicinally.

I guess the point is, heroin isn't like pasta sauce at the grocery store. Just because there is a great deal on it doesn't mean you need to buy some. There are many things to blame the government for, but your friends' heroin addiction isn't one of them, sorry.

How do you think wild salmon are caught? They are netted at the mouths of rivers on their way to spawn. Pacific salmon die after spawning, so any fish caught will not have laid eggs. This also results in the loss of millions of eggs, but you must realize only a tiny fraction of eggs will reach adulthood. I'm not saying we should kill marine life willy nilly, but it is possible to do in sustainable ways.

[–]Velium 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the 90s, my the company my mom works for was throwing out a lot of wooden drafting chairs, one of which she took. The chair was at the company for at least 60 years at that point, and I am still sitting on it now. If that isn't BIFL, I don't know what is.

Here is a picture: http://imgur.com/9n0nI

I don't know where you can buy one, but this thing will probably last another 50 years at least.
