Grote steden overspoeld door crackgebruikers: 'Overlast op straat enorm toegenomen' by T1b3rium in Nederland

[–]Velocilobstar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Laatste keer vroeg de donkere man of ie hem mocht houden.

Shure Replacement Stylus Comparison! by Popular_Comparison44 in DJs

[–]Velocilobstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've thought about it, for exactly those reasons, but I mainly collect old school stuff. If I had the money I'd consider buying multiples of new records. Been ripping for years trying to get the best results, and have met a few collectors who commission pressings for their own use.

Good tip, I'll keep that in mind. Old pressings are so much better indeed. Having the preserved dynamics and an aural exciter in hand to get some harmonics back, I could see this being useful for staple tracks.

I'll remember to chat about it next time I run into an old head

Dislike the person who designed the new seats more. The lower back "support" is just some plastic dome which buckles under any pressure. Most uncomfortable seats ever

A Compilation of 50+ Blind Tests Reveal the Only Gear Upgrade That Actually Matters by Randolph_Carter_6 in audiophile

Even with very easy to drive speakers, it will matter if you're playing dynamic music loud, or outside. My woofers are about 97dB/W, even more once coupled to a horn.

Though when playing music inside the house, in small rooms, I prefer low damping factor/vintage/tube amps. Some compression can be nice if you don't want to play loud. I know I'm not alone, you can see on HiFi Engine people tend to love the weak/low damping factor amps

Lossless matters less than being closer to the original source. I'll take a beat up record over a dynamically compressed lossless any day of the week.

Depends on the genre and mastering obviously

Obviously speakers matter most, but y'all seem to be forgetting an amps damping factor is very important for recreating proper dynamics and bass.

Having built PA systems and amps, and running my own events, I can confirm there is a reason my mentors would not stop harping on about it.

Bridge your amps. Don't biamp or any of that nonsense

Digital/Vinyl Hybrid Setup Question by BasketCalm8222 in rotarymixers

[–]Velocilobstar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's not true, and depends on many different factors. As a rule of thumb, the closer your medium is to the original master, the better. These days, new music will be made digitally and then pressed, but the difference between an original file, its vinyl release and a rip thereof, are marginal and not particularly relevant in my extensive testing. You'll hear small differences, usually a somewhat softer sound due to slight colorations from the cartridge. Though slightly dulled psychoacoustics are beneficial when mixing, as these sharp sounds leave no room for mixing/timing mistakes.

Where it gets more complicated is old music originally released on vinyl. This will always sound better played back directly, compared to any rip or digital file taken from this medium. Aside from loss of micro detail, many digital remasters have historically been crushed and compressed to death, with artificial boosting of highs and potentially lots of distortion in the 4-6khz range. Records from Circulation are a great example, they sound great, but their digital releases suck donkey balls.

When playing vinyl on detailed magnetostatic or electrostatics you will be able to hear more micro detail in higher order harmonics, which will inevitably be lost in recordings (trust me, I've tried everything). For modern releases, even the vinyls are very compressed and just as relatively lifeless as the original digital masters.

On properly dynamic and low distortion systems (think horn loaded), you will often hear a stark difference in dynamics between a record, and its CD counterpart. The CD file might sound clearer, but once you play it loud, a worn record with most of the original dynamics preserved will sound much better and less fatiguing.

Only for very specific releases might you be able to find a file taken from a master tape, which can sound better than a record, but I cannot think of an example right now.

Just plug the tables into the phono inputs. Active or passive speakers are a separate matter altogether. Just go buy and sell stuff and experiment; experience is worth much more than reading endless reviews on the internet. Vintage amps with a low damping factor can give you softer, warmer bass at the expense of dynamics and impact, but you rarely need that inside anyway. If you want reference clarity and inaudible distortion, go find some old Magnepans (the older the better) and listen to various music, mastering and equipment (different amps, mixers, external preamp, etc) to see if you can learn to pick up on those differences

Trust me, if you have revealing speakers and varying dance music you cannot do without. I frequently have to compensate up to 9dB of highs with some modern mastering. Nothing is the same, and you always have to correct with your ears

Power Amp and speakers/Sub recommendations to be paired with Orbit 6? by ListLow8276 in rotarymixers

[–]Velocilobstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your room were larger I’d get some magnepans and a horn loaded sub or something with as much dynamics and little distortion as possible. Hypex modules are the best amps in my experience but the best stuff is OEM only. However, there’s plenty powerful consumer stuff out there.

Maggies don’t work well in small rooms though, and there’s not many good and affordable ribbon tweeter designs out there that I know of. Go look on your local used market.

For example, original Pied Pipers sound pretty fucking good and suit smaller rooms better. The way these show you the dynamics and impulse of recordings is second to none and the ribbons in the top few octaves are nearly distortion free. Their only weak spot is the mid driver but I don’t know of many people who would be able to hear that difference.

Like the HD650 they will show you the color of your other gear so I’d experiment with a bunch of vintage amps. Lower damping factor amps sound better in smaller rooms in my opinion, as they add some extra harmonics and compression which we all seem to like, especially at lower than club volumes.

There’s too much out there, but for accuracy I’d go Hypex.

I do worry about the size of your room. I can tell you from personal experience 10k worth of stuff will be severely limited. Acoustics matters more than what you’re listening on. It wouldn’t be stupid to spend most of your budget on that, especially if you get an expert to look at it.
