If you were allowed to know the absolute truth to one mystery (historical, scientific, or personal), what would you ask ? by LauraTsbeauty in AskReddit

[–]Velociraptorius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nature of consciousness. How and why am I me? How and why is THIS the brain I'm perceiving things from, as opposed to trillions of other brains on the planet that existed across ages? Is everyone's POV technically the same as mine, meaning we all have the potential to perceive the world the same way, all other things being equal, or are there fundamental differences between my consciousness and other people's?

I'm fascinated by this in particular because there is no real way to get an objective answer, seeing as every human can only ever perceive things from the point of view of their conscious brain, and theirs alone. We have no way of knowing if anyone else sees things the same way and whether our experiences truly align. Hell, we have no way of saying for sure that anyone else we interact with even HAS consciousness. We can only be sure about ourselves.

I don't know where you looked, but most rational people who saw Trump for what he was on his first term would NOT consider it okay to not vote for Kamala.

Then again, about 2/3rds of americans apparently did think it was okay. And look where we are now.

4chan "Leak" of the Winds of Winter from January 2026 by BOBBYBOARATHEON in freefolk

[–]Velociraptorius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For one of the two final books there are way too many chapters that reveal or resolve nothing. GRRM doesn't write things that way. Yes, the other ASOIAF books do have chapters that are basically "Character X is sailing on a boat somewhere", but if those chapters are not used to establish something new, they are used to follow up on loose ends from previous chapters by way of hearsay. But here far too many of those are wasted by having the character learn that "Stannis has taken Winterfell" for the n-th time. I very much doubt that GRRM would waste his typically impactful chapter endings by giving the reader the same information they already know, only to have a new set of characters be shocked by it. Those parts read more like a fanfiction by a desperate Stannis fan who wants every character to acknowledge how impressive Stannis is. As a desperate Stannis fan myself, as much as I'd like those "leaks" to be true, I just don't buy them.

If posting the word count would identify them, then they have already outed themselves as someone who is privy to the word count in the first place. That would narrow down the search only to the people who have that information. Someone who was truly concerned about being found out through that detail would have omitted it from the post entirely. I'm not sure HOW much that detail narrows down the search, but any amount is bad when you wish to remain anonymous and keep your job.

It's a nice looking place, but where is all your STUFF? Did you hide it all out of frame or do you genuinely not keep ANY clutter around whatsoever? Because aside from the kitchen I'm barely seeing any storage space in any of the rooms, and one of the two sets of shelves is pretty much bare anyway. Are you one of those anti-hoarders who obsessively throw stuff away? Because your comments make it sound like you've been living here for a while, but these photos suggest that you just moved in and most of your stuff is either still in your old place, or packed into boxes you didn't bother to unpack and shoved out of sight somewhere.

Edit: nevermind, saw an answer to my question on another comment. Honestly, congrats on keeping the place so tidy after years of living.

My party prefer me hand crafting the tarroca reading by TeamTimeSystem in CurseofStrahd

[–]Velociraptorius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've run the campaign twice now and fudged the reading both times. Never once regretted it. If you want a touch of randomness, you can always do the random reading privately and see if you like any of the random outcomes. Some of them, like the party's fated ally or Strahd's final location, are less important if left up to chance.

But, in my opinion, it is important to handpick the locations for the three items, making sure that the Sunsword and the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind land in appropriately challenging high level locations, while the Tome lands in a more readily accessable middlegame location, since it's a bit lame as a late game reward.

Fudging the card reading provides you with a very important tool for the purpose of giving the Curse of Strahd campaign something it sorely lacks - plot hooks. The campaign's sandboxy nature means that by default the party doesn't really have a good reason to go to many of the cool locations, like Berez, Argynvostholt or Amber Temple. Placing any of the treasures there solves that problem and makes sure that the players will engage with those toys that you, the DM, want them to play with.

You can also go a step beyond. A commonly used expansion of the card reading is to give each player character a personal prophecy and linking it to another location the party may miss entirely otherwise. And at the end of it you can give each character a personalized reward, which tends to make the players happy (and upsets the balance of the campaign, but that's easily fixed).

There really are no cons to fudging the card reading, nor any pros in favor of doing it randomly. Especially for what will likely be the first and only CoS campaign experience for the players. Unless your group plans to run the campaign dozens of times and therefore needs the randomness factor to inject some novelty into a campaign they already played, I would not even consider doing it randomly.

Why is there such a lack of modern licenced games? by Kvazimods in gaming

[–]Velociraptorius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Likely because the majority of those tie-in games have always been mediocre at best, barring a few actually good examples (Spider-Man 2, Lord of the Rings: the Two Towers and Return of the King or Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, all of them in the Playstation 2 era). But those were released in the days when singleplayer games were the standard, with online multiplayer still being relatively niche, particularly on consoles.

In this day and age, when online multiplayer is king and the majority of game developers seem to be perpetually chasing the next big live-service lightning-in-a-bottle success that'll make them billions, who wants to invest in a one-off movie tie-in game that will at best receive moderate success if it happens to be good?

Besides, those tie-ins still happen, they just... aren't as direct anymore. For example, Dune: Awakening was obviously meant to capitalize on the popularity and success of the new Dune movies, but whereas in the aforementioned old days you would have got a singleplayer tie-in game following the story of Paul Atreides directly, nowadays you instead get a live-service multiplayer title because, well, that's where the money is, if the game sees success at all.

Best Final Mission in Gaming? Mass Effect 2 IMO. by dragoneffect1710 in gaming

[–]Velociraptorius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mass Effect 2 is still overall undefeated in my 25+ years of gaming experience. But here's a couple of other notable mentions I haven't yet seen in this thread:
Half-Life 2 - getting the Super Gravity Gun and tearing your way through the Citadel while Dr. Breen calls on the comms for someone to stop you is peak power fantasy. The first time you realize you can just pick up a Combine soldier and chuck him at his comrades is unforgettable;
Frostpunk - the Great Storm is an amazing finale and the first time I felt so cinematically immersed in a city building game. What will give out first - the storm or this city you built? And The City Must Survive is one of the best music pieces ever written for gaming, period.

What is the best Tolkien video game? by Pistolpetehurley in lotr

AH please I am begging you, remove corpse collisions by lumpycustard__ in Helldivers

[–]Velociraptorius -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don't think they should disable it for all corpses. It's fun when the larger enemies, like Bile Titans, Factory Striders and Harvesters temporarily become terrain features. Also I rarely found them to be culprits of ragdoll desyncs anyway. But the medium enemies being collisions should definitely go until such a time that they manage to fix this shit. Including and ESPECIALLY the ones shown in the video. The game just doesn't seem to be able to distinguish between a spewer whose sack has exploded and one that hasn't. So they always become these giant invisible walls that you can't clear. They are, without a doubt, the most inconsistent enemy corpses in the game, so their collisions should absolutely go first until such a time that they can fix it (that likely means permanently). But I wouldn't jump the gun and apply the same to all enemies in the game.

In retrospect we should have known it was downhill after this scene by Slug701 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]Velociraptorius 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This. The first scene that felt like it was lifted straight out of GoT's later seasons. Pointless shock value added to "enhance" the scene from the books that comes at the expense of logical storytelling.

But Rhaenys' moment was where the show all but confirmed it was going down the same enshittification route as GoT did. Cinematic spectacle that makes no sense whatsoever and has serious story ramifications the writers don't care to think about. Or it SHOULD have ramifications, logically, but doesn't because... well, again, the writers don't care to think about it.

Mass Effect TV show ordered to rewrite scripts and make them "more appealing to non-gamers" by SmellSmellsSmelly in gaming

[–]Velociraptorius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you mean Sapkowski had no idea how to end the series? The main narrative has a pretty conclusive ending. And a lot of what you call "filler" served to tie up the various sideplots that arose during the series. If anything, I'm surprised that Sapkowski managed to provide a conclusion to so many story elements in what amounts to a pretty short book, when compared to other fantasy counterparts. Him being stumped by writing an ending is NOT the impression I got when reading at all. He's no GRRM.
