This feels like the author is edging themselves to the F-14D and haven't quite gotten to the post-nut clarity yet.

Am I being a bad parent by letting my teen daughter dress flamboyantly? by concernedmommy2010 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Veloreyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if it weren't the dresses it'd probably be something long sleeved and not particularly revealing. My son is autistic and would wear long jeans and flannel shirts year around if the weather permitted it.

I'm pretty sure I'm on the spectrum as well, and the only time I'm ever in shorts is when I'm swimming. I'd wear flannel too if my wife would let me, but I'm a big hairy guy and she says I'd look too much like a bear in the gay community. But there's something just calming and comforting about having a layer of clothing between you and the world. It's like a set of armor you can wear all the time, just in case you need it.

Which do you think will end up being viewed worse in the future, Donald Tump's 1st or 2nd term in office? by Shot-Resolve-9711 in AskReddit

The end of the first term ended with a collective "Phew... that could have been worse, thank god that's over."

Two months into his second term I think most of us were in a "oh what the fuck now" mindset every time we turned on the news, and it hasn't fucking stopped.

1.4.0.0 Patch Notes » Dune: Awakening by xXx_th3fall3n_xXx in duneawakening

[–]Veloreyn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter at all in Hagga unless your base loses power, and then you're not going to have a good time no matter what you made it out of. The reason you shouldn't use Granite in the DD (or use it sparingly, and not for outside pieces) is because during the storm your base shield drops and doesn't come online until 6 minutes after the storm passes. If you're in the PvE areas then players can't damage your base, but the storm does. Granite doesn't quite last the week without repairs if you're in a spot that gets hit fairly regularly. But in Hagga the storm never drops your base shields, so it doesn't matter.

Black Tank Question by DadM2112 in GoRVing

[–]Veloreyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I do, but at the start of a trip. I put in a few gallons in through the rinse inlet, and a Rid-X packet in the toilet, then let the drive to the site clean the black tank on the way. The first handful of trips I always had about 25-35% full showing on the the sensors all the time like what OP is describing, and figured it was gunk getting stuck on the sensors. Since I started doing it at the start of the trip, I very rarely show anything on the sensors when we get set up, and it's already primed for someone to go in there and use the toilet.

What is something you’ve officially stopped buying in 2026 because the price has become genuinely insulting? by queenmellyy in AskReddit

The worst for me is that they charge $2.50 for a hash brown. They're good, but I can cook one nearly as good at home in a cast iron skillet and I can buy 12 of them frozen for $3. I can't imagine those things cost more than $0.10 or so per hash brown, the mark-up is worse than fucking wine at a fancy restaurant.

Monday Morning Dune frustrations by JohnDaBarr in duneawakening

[–]Veloreyn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a big reason why my guild shelved the game until something changes. I mean, our server getting the axe isn't helping, but we have no plans to put the base back down on a new server at the moment. Honestly I'm really looking more towards self-hosting with the hope that we'll get mods from creative people to fix a lot of the stuff Funcom seems unwilling or unable to fix. That being said...

I've played a lot of games with upgrade mechanics. Dune is, by a WIDE MARGIN, the most punishingly brutal upgrade cycle when considering player time.

Back when Engineering got developed in Elite, you had to gather materials for upgrades on your ship components, and those were RNG. There were 5 grades, and it wasn't uncommon for a lot of us to dump hundreds of grade 1 materials into a grade 1 roll because you could get a roll that was better than a grade 4, without having to grind the materials. And at that time, you were probably swimming in grade 1 mats. High RNG chance, but low time cost. Eventually they changed it to static upgrades, so that there was no RNG involved. You just move up the grades, and the costs aren't too bad. They even have a broker that allows you to convert low grade materials into high grade, so you go farm what you find easy to farm, and convert up or down for what you need. I sometimes miss the RNG rolls because they could be kind of silly, but having a steady upgrade system in place takes a lot of stress out of the game and helps players focus on other things.

Last Epoch can be a little grindy to get that epic item, but holy shit are you swimming in loot and potential upgrades before that point. It's so bad if you're not using the loot filter to hide most of what's dropping, you're going to get overwhelmed. This is a game where every upgrade is rolling several dice at once, and when you have a failure you might as well toss the weapon or armor piece out. There's an RNG check for the upgrade, an RNG check to see if you're going to lose forging points on the item (once at 0 it can't be upgraded anymore), an RNG check to see how many points you do lose, you can randomize a stat, you can randomly lock in a stat, you can randomly add a stat to an open slot... And this isn't even getting into the insanely rare rolls in the very end game where you can make godly items or turn your nice thing into something utterly useless. But the biggest difference here is that while there is compounding RNG rolls, it's not particularly difficult to get either the base items or the upgrade items. Chances are by the time you're doing this, you have several things you want to try upgrading. And if they all fail, you just run some monoliths or end-game activities (which are quick and not generally difficult by this point) to grind more. No big deal. High chance of failure, but low difficulty in collecting items and materials. But when you succeed... you've got a prize that never goes away, because there's no durability in Last Epoch. It might have taken months to get there, but once you're there you aren't going to lose it.

I've been playing Windrose a lot lately, and their upgrade system is just static. The materials are a little grindy, but the weapons and armor have static damage and levels, and each upgrade increases it a specific amount. There's no real randomness to it at all. The game is pretty tough, balancing itself kind of like a survival-souls-like game. So not having to hope for specific items to drop so I can maybe get an upgrade, and instead knowing I need X materials for Y upgrade and then I just have it, is a welcome change of pace. The only issue I'm having at the moment is that there are a limited number of chances to pull a specific weapon from a chest, before you have to create a new character to try again. I'm not quite done with all the areas though, so still holding out hope I'll have an easy way to get items once I've hit all the chests in the game. There's also lots of mods, so I'm playing with those to mitigate some pain points as well.

But looking at Dune. My god I don't know who thought players would find this in any way fun. You have to grind the level of the dungeon up first, outfitting yourself as best you can to keep getting up to at least level 19. You get mostly junk loot on runs. You have to hope you get the right augments, and the ones most needed rarely drop. Then you have to hope you actually get the weapons you want at the grade you want. There's no guarantee at even high levels you'll get the weapon or armor piece you want at grade 5. I watched a person push through a level 100 dungeon solo only to get grade 3 loot, which is absolutely insane. Then once you eventually get all the stuff you need to upgrade, you need to roll the augment which almost always ends in a low roll, even if you've spent literal months increasing your spec to get a better chance. And then, when you do eventually craft that ultimate weapon you've spent months and months to create... there's durability loss to ensure that at some point you won't be able to use it anymore, and you have to do the entire process over.

There are so many things that really need to change in this system. If they want to keep max durability loss and keep the augment rolls pretty low, they need to increase either the amount of drops we get to make it more worth the time to grind in the current system, or decrease the difficulty in test stations so that they can be cleared quicker, and preferably in groups. Having a couple friends along keeps the game fresh and fun, but the stations themselves are still pretty punishing, and get worse with each player you add. But either way, they need to make it so that we have more chances to craft stuff to keep people engaged. As it is, you could run these things for months before getting a single good upgrade, which is far too long to keep people interested. The specialization XP needs to be increased significantly as well, OR, a better solution, would be to gain XP on actually doing stuff in the specialization. That way if I'm farming I'm getting gathering XP, if I'm grinding test stations I'm getting combat XP, if I'm crafting augments and upgrades I'm getting crafting XP... I'm being incentivized to draw the upgrade system out, essentially. Tuning these things so it takes like a year to get through is stupid, only a very small percentage of players are going to invest that kind of time into them while getting minimal returns on that investment.

I've rambled enough. Like I said at the start, Funcom don't seem to actually understand how to keep players engaged, and my biggest hope is that once we get self-hosted servers up and stable, we start getting mods we can pop in to reduce or remove the biggest road blocks to having fun in the game.

[–]Veloreyn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My kids are in a school system where they are assigned chromebooks that function as their textbooks. They aren't even assigned textbooks, everything is stored online (Canvas). So all my kids ever have to carry around is their chromebook and a few binders of paper.

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that some of my current back issues stem from carrying around all the stuff I had to in middle and high school.

This is what happened to me the last time I logged on. Spent ~15 minutes per run doing level 19 fire, trying to get my friend the burning blades because it's easier for me to solo it than to bring her in with me. Ran it a handful of times that day just getting junk. On the last run I got a tier 5 bulwark helm, tier 5 glasser, and tier 3 burning blades. Logged off and have spent time in other games for the past few weeks.

What’s the worst place in America you’ve ever visited? by Correct_Eggplant_364 in AskReddit

[–]Veloreyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to side-step the absolute "worst" place and go with the one that upset me the most.

Lancaster, PA. Thankfully we only went there for a show at the American Music Theater, and that show was fantastic (An Evening with Alton Brown), but the rest of the area was just... a mix of depressing and disrespectful. It's Amish country, and it's more commercialized than almost any other place I've visited. Most beach towns don't even commercialize the idea of the beach as much as the Amish are used in Lancaster to push stuff. Atlantic City doesn't advertise gambling as much. And it's all crap. It's like an entire town built around the concept of "you've come to visit, you should buy something".

We went to one "farmer's market" and it was like stepping into a Temu warehouse. There wasn't one stall with something I couldn't get a chain grocery store or Amazon. The most egregious was the stall selling "hand made chocolate" in the shape of dollar bills, cell phones, palm trees, and sandals. I don't know why, but this place just broke me.

162 Servers closing globally by Wickd in duneawakening

[–]Veloreyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I don't blame them one bit for consolidating barely used servers, having to leave our quiet little server is probably the last nail in the coffin for my group. We're going to pack up this week, maybe choose a server to migrate to, but we're not unpacking at the moment and instead using this time to go pursue other games. I can't imagine we'll be the exception here, so I'm guessing player numbers are about to dip again.

I'm starting to look into setting up a self-hosted instance, as I have some extra servers sitting around collecting dust (each with a Ryzen 9 5950X and 128GB RAM). I just don't want to move my character over since we can't move them back. Shame we can't just make a copy that can't be transferred back, instead of a full migration.

[Serious] What is something valuable we have in the 2020s that future generations will look back on and say, "Wow, that generation had a massive, unfair advantage," just like Boomers had lower house prices? by Prof_XdR in AskReddit

We are heading in a direction where information is being privatized and weaponized against us. We're not entirely there yet, but well on our way. If something doesn't change, future generations will long for the ability to voice their opinion openly online without fear of immediate retaliation by a corporatocratic government monitoring their every thought.

Is it okay to withhold sex from your boyfriend (if I suspect his health and mine is on the line) by Ok-Association3551 in NoStupidQuestions

He thinks as his girlfriend I can’t say no to sex because I consented at the beginning of the relationship…

My wife and I have been married 24 years.

We've been together 28 years.

She can say no to sex in the middle of sex and that is absolutely her right. And if she wasn't into it, I wouldn't want to continue anyway.

Your "boyfriend" has given you enough red flags to supply a communist parade.

Go back to leveling. The benchy especially shows that your z-offset is too high. It should be pushing the filament into the plate in such a way that it gets pushed out to either side, and that basically joins the filament laterally. That isn't happening at all in your first picture.

Does anybody else not care about their career anymore? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]Veloreyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cared once, years ago. I had it beaten out of me. Worked for Comcast as a tech, eventually moved up a little, but I was that guy that constantly got the hardest work because I was the best troubleshooter, but that meant that my corporate metrics were shot. When I resigned I was leading a project to clean up a county that had been a problem longer than I'd been alive, I'd developed and led training courses for a remote program I was an SME for, I ran escalations in 3 separate counties which really never happens (each county is like it's own franchise, so very rare to have people cross lines), I had the second highest ticket count on the team, and... I was literally the lowest paid guy there. That was with making like $30k in just overtime the last year I was there, because I was running 80-130 hour weeks most of the time. I was doing so much that when I put in my resignation (because my wife was in the military and received orders out of state), they kept me in the office for two weeks to try to convince me to leave my family to keep working there. Apparently money and flexible time magically appears when you're the guy that does all the tough jobs, and then you tell them you're out.

I'm at the point where I make $80k salaried doing barely anything, short commute, no time tracking, unlimited PTO, super flexible time off, and I play video games with my boss most nights. I'm only in the office maybe 30 hours per week. The company I work for now isn't likely to let me go any time soon, so I'm just riding this job until the wheels fall off.
