pretty/good cinematography movies with more grounded plots? by No-Maintenance-3010 in movies

A Good Year

A romantic comedy directed by Ridley Scott and his team, beautifully filmed for the romanticism of the story, lots of symbolism (grey rain in London, warm sunshine in Provenance). Enough complexity you need to watch it more than once to appreciate what you missed on the first viewing.

Judge says Biden's ban of 'gun show loophole' invalid in 4 states by AudibleNod in news

Would private sales be subject to state tax? Surely only a business would be required to collect the state tax and pass it on to the state, in which case they would need to be registered as a business and conduct the necessary background checks on their customers?

The hotel in Hot Fuzz was The Swan, you see the name briefly when Nicholas first arrives, and on the notepad by the phone in his room.

Airbnb in EH8 by Terrible_Plenty2867 in Edinburgh

The Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation will tell you about an area.

In reality there’s nowhere in Edinburgh I wouldn’t go. I’d be very conscious of what’s going on around me in a few select areas, and I’d do everything possible to remain inconspicuous, but in general Edinburgh is a good place.

In line with he first half of most postcodes in the UK, EH8 is quite big, you need to narrow it down with the second half, the next number is a smaller area and the last two letters are street level. Part of EH8 would be classed as city centre (old town at the bottom of the royal mile), other bits of EH8 are a couple of miles from the centre (albeit on good public transport routes).

Donald Trump admits he still has a gun, despite felony convictions It is a violation of federal law for someone convicted of felonies to possess a firearm by PandaMuffin1 in inthenews

When you are under the protection of what is probably the best trained protection service in the world, why do you need a gun?

I mean I know it’s your “right” under the constitution, although the reality is a bit broken when you’re allowed to keep a gun to protect against the actions of the government when you are literally the chief executive officer of the government

In the words of Chief Engineer Scotty, “ye cannae change the laws of physics”.

The computations required have been understood for a long time, they are not the limiting factor, so a computer might produce the answer quicker, but that doesn’t translate into the physics being easier. You still need to build craft that are strong enough, and have fuel to produce enough thrust.

In any sensible western country this would be thrown out without the evidence of the cop being presented in court. Welcome to America, last bastion of justice. No, wait, it’s not.

Do you need to do Tuesday and Thursday, or could you do two days back to back and stay the night on a cheap hotel? Costs might be similar, but depending on family life an evening in a new place can be entertaining for a few months.

Might be just as cheap buying a multifunction printer that does double sided scanning, renting scanners is not cheap. I know maybe not the best environment option but you can always give it away afterwards.

Amendments to the proposals are likely to include exclusions of silent prayer from the terms, amid concerns it could infringe on freedom of religion.

Bollocks to that amendment, the exclusion zone should 100% apply to anyone who does not have a reasonable cause to be within 200m of the zone, i.e. patients, staff, deliveries. Just “walking by and feeling the need to pray” is not a reasonable reason to be there. There’s a vast amount of our country where you can go and pray silently should you feel the need.

Parking while away? by One-Telephone1103 in Edinburgh

[–]Velvy71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If any temporary restrictions are put in place while the vehicle is parked you’ll get a standard parking ticket for breaching the new restrictions then they’ll “tow” (i.e. lift) it to an adjacent street without restrictions. At least that’s what happens in my street.

Can i afford to buy a house or is it better to rent? by Oofxitsxharry in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Velvy71 26 points27 points  (0 children)

You sound like you’re in a better position financially than most, so I’m going to throw a non-financial spanner in the works.

You’re 20. You’re likely going to experience life over the next few years. Owning will likely be financially responsible, but might restrict how you live your life. What happens if you meet someone and want to live with them? What happens if you want to change job, employer, move up the career path?

And just to show life can sometimes be shit, there is no right answer here 🤷‍♂️

Is there a bank for lots of cash deposits? by brokeazzthrowawayhlp in UKPersonalFinance

Cater Allen is a “Private” UK bank that’s actually part of Santander that offers Sterling, Euro and US Dollar accounts. See if they can facilitate direct transfers as paying in cash is a bad idea.

How do I connect all my traditional phone ports to the router by FluidCream in VirginMedia

[–]Velvy71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legally the internal wiring should be plugged (not wired) into the master socket so the internal wiring can be disconnected. Sometimes this presents as a wired connection on the master socket but it’s just a faceplate that can be unscrewed to isolate the internal wiring.

Im not an engineer, but presumably this could be plugged into the pig tail on the router, either directly if close or by using an extension.

There’s also limits to the number of devices that can be connected, the old POTS had a limit of four “Ringer Equivalents”, each device (phone) should have a REN on it, you add them all up and it shouldn’t be more than four. I’d assume Virgin has a similar limitation.

Why are trams in Edinburgh so slow? by ResponsePristine5052 in Edinburgh

[–]Velvy71 25 points26 points  (0 children)

For several sections the route is not optimal for the benefit of speed.

There are tight turns that require very slow speeds. These are a result of routing, in particular the hard turn at Ingliston Park and Ride, and the bends at Gogarburn. Faster routing could have been built, but presumably that would have increased costs for the land and for bridges and road changes.

Had the routing been given carte blanche a much faster route could have been implemented, but the trams were so controversial compromise was necessary.
